UNA bet opposes JBL privatization

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–A senatorial bet from the United Nationalist Alliance party has expressed opposition to the pending privatization of a regional government hospital here.

Senatoriable Miguel “Migs” Zubiri expressed opposition to the proposed privatization of the Jose B. Lingad Memorial Regional Hospital (JBLMRH) because it will deprive poor people of affordable medical services.

“This proposal will deprive the poor access to affordable health care. We strongly oppose this,” Zubiri said during his interview over RWFM 95.1 Thursday morning.

The JBLMRH is among the 26 public hospitals in the country targeted to be “corporatized” through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) program of the Aquino administration.

The privatization of regional hospitals is being pushed in the Congress under House Bill 6069 or “An Act Creating National Government Hospital Corporations.” The bill was filed by Bacolod City Representative Anthony Rolando Golez, Jr., also chairman of the house committee on health.

Aside from the JBLMRH, the following hospitals are also included in the house bill: Cagayan Valley Medical Center, Veterans Regional Hospital, Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center, Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center, Regional Medical Center, Dr. Paulino J. Garcia Memorial Research and Medical Center, Bicol Medical Center (Naga City), Bicol Research Training and Teaching Hospital (Legaspi City), Quirino Memorial Medical Center, Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center, Rizal Medical Center, Amang Rodriguez Medical Center, San Lazaro Hospital, Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center, Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, Western Visayas Medical Center, Northern Mindanao Medical Center, Southern Philippines Medical Center, Zamboanga City Medical Center, Cotobato Regional and Medical Center, CARAGA Regional Hospital, Davao Regional Hospital, Mayor Hilarion A. Ramiro, Sr. Regional Center and Training Hospital.

Zubiri said instead of privatizing, the government should increase funding for these government hospitals to upgrade their services to the poor.
