PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III underscored on Saturday the importance of prayer for national unity and progress as he led the country in observing the 2012 Global Day of Prayer.
In his speech in Greenhills. San Juan, the Chief Executive said he gathers strength from prayer as well as the support of the Filipino people to faithfully fulfill the responsibilities of the presidency.
The President also acknowledged the importance of prayer saying his family also resorted to prayer during the dark days of martial law when the late Senator Ninoy Aquino was imprisoned. Prayer unified the Aquino family during those difficult times, he said.
“Today we invoke the same power of prayer to unify, to remind us that despite some gaps in geography or perhaps even some gaps in age, we are all brothers and sisters in our faith,” he said.
“Filipinos are known all over the world for our faith, especially now that we are also becoming known for our initiatives to change our own lives for the better. After all prayer is not simply trusting in God’s divine providence; it is also letting His divine providence work through us,” he added.
The President encouraged the people to always think that everyone is always in the presence of God, noting that prayer could help them overcome temptations, especially those in public office.
“Let us remember that the strength we gain from prayer is not individual strength — it is a strength that has roots from God, and from the people around us. And thus, it is this strength we can rely on as we move forward along the straight path—towards better lives for our countrymen and of those in the world, but also towards a closer, more prosperous, and more peaceful world,” he said.
Also during Saturday’s event, Christian church leaders, led by Dr. Hugh White, prayed over the President for his success as the country’s leader.
The Global Day of Prayer started in Africa in 2000 when South African Christian businessman, Graham Power, called all Christians from all denominations in Cape Town for a Day of Repentance and Prayer.
On May 2, 2004, history was made when Christians from all 56 nations of Africa participated in the first ever continental Day of Repentance and Prayer for Africa.
At a meeting of the International Prayer Council in Malaysia in November 2004, the invitation from Africa went out to the nations of the world to participate in a Global Day of Prayer process.
On Pentecost Sunday, May 15, 2005, Christians from 156 of the 220 nations of the world united across denominational and cultural borders for the first Global Day of Prayer. MALACANANG justified on Saturday why Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales was in possession of documents regarding Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona’s supposed bank transactions, which she presented in the Senate impeachment court.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte, in a radio interview over dzRB Radyo ng Bayan, said since the start of the impeachment trial, Malacanang was consistent in saying that the executive branch would be ready to assist if some quarters would seek help with regard to Corona’s impeachment case.
“We have always been upfront in saying…to assist those who would need (help) because the executive (branch) holds the documents. So if there were any requests, those would be granted. The agencies will move to provide the documentation,” she explained.
Corona has accused Morales of being used by Malacanang to destroy him.
During her testimony before the impeachment court, Morales, in a powerpoint presentation, quoting the report she obtained from the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC), said that Corona had at least $10 million foreign currency deposits.
Corona, however, denied this saying that he only has $2.4-million foreign deposits and 80-million peso deposits.
Valte reiterated that Morales appeared before the impeachment court upon the request of the defense panel.
“They (defense team) are the ones who called the witness and when they did not like what the witness has said, now they are trying to destroy her,” she said.
She also said that when Morales testified, she was “very careful” of her testimonies.
“She (Morales) never said that those were the year-end nor the total of the contents of those dollar accounts,” she said.
Valte also criticized Corona for his seeming “conflicting” statements regarding his decision to withdraw his deposits at the Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank).
She noted that at one point the chief magistrate stated that he no longer trusts the bank manager thus he withdrew his money, while he also mentioned that he got information from Malacanang insiders that his deposits would be frozen by the government.
“The peanut butter gets thicker everyday. So we’re not really sure if there’s any truth to what the Chief Justice had said,” she said.
“Were his bank accounts ever frozen? The answer is no. Where did that come from? Obviously, he got the wrong information,” Valte added.
Meanwhile, asked if Malacanang would push for the amendments of the Foreign Currency Deposit Act (FCDA), Valte said it would depend on the lawmakers.
Valte, who is a lawyer by profession, also said that FCDA is directed to the banks and not to the depositors.
“In FCDA, the exception being given is the permission from the depositors. So obviously, it does not bar the depositor from talking about his own deposits because the exemption is explicit, that it empowers the depositor to sign a waiver to talk about his own deposits,” she said.
“So that law is not directed to the depositor himself but to the banks who handle and take care of the deposits,” she added.

CANDABA — A group of tricycle drivers here lauded Governor Lilia Pineda’s plan to sponsor a motorcycle trouble-shooting seminar.
The proposed project is aimed at providing the drivers an alternative source of income.
Pineda earlier called for the mobilization of various Tricycle Operators Drivers Association in the province to give the tricycle drivers with technical skills involving motorcycle repair and maintenance.
The group said they are glad that the Provincial Government is giving importance to drivers like them.
“Sana matuloy po ito. Malaking tulong kung matutuhan ng mga tulad naming ang pagkumpuni sa tricycle para kung sakali man at magkaproblema ay kami na mismo ang gagawa makakatipid pa kami ng upa sa gawa,” said Amador Galang, a tricycle driver here.
Galang said their group is happy because despite the busy schedule of the governor, she still finds way to help and improve their lives by making them productive through livelihood program.
“Ngayon lang kami nabibigyan ng ganitong pansin. Ilang gobernador na rin ang dumaan sa probinsya,” another tricycle driver said.
After the proposed seminar on motorcycle repair and maintenance, the Provincial Government vowed to provide the necessary support, particularly with the provision of tools and other equipments.

Archimedes Reyes, city information officer, said the city enjoins barangays to participate in all aspects of governance, including information, education and communication (IEC).

“We will include the 33 barangays of Angeles in research and communication storage in order to give flesh to the city’s information networking,” Reyes said.

The workshop dwelled on the importance of a city-barangay partnership in information dissemination and how the barangay units can utilize social media in feeding information to their respective communities.

“Because of the internet and other innovations, information transfer is undoubtedly faster than before. We must take advantage of this by feeding constructive information to Angelenos,” Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan said during the workshop.

“This workshop is essential because we have been extending the hands of the City Government to our constituents. With the inclusion of our barangay information officers in this goal, the programs and the services that are available to the Angelenos will be easily and effectively delivered to them,” Pamintuan added.

The workshop also magnified the role of each information officer in the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s (DILG) Barangay Governance and Performance Management System (BGPMS).

“If our barangay officers are well equipped with the skills, all the needed data as per the Full Disclosure Report in observance to the BGPMS will be readily available,” DILG City Director Myrvi Apostol-Fabia said.

“With this, we will effectively deliver efficient and prompt information-and-communications-related services to Angelenos and research communities,” she added.

SAN LUIS — A group of parents here has expressed disagreement with the impending implementation of the K+12 basic education curriculum (BEC) by the Department of Education (DepEd) in June.
The group said the additional two years in high school and another year for kindergarten, as prerequisite before entering elementary education, would mean extra burden for every poor families in the localities.
“Pinaunlad na lamang sana nila ang paraan ng pagtuturo. Sana ay dinagdagan ang bilang ng classrooms para mabawasan ang bilang ng mga estudyante sa bawat klase,” said Teresita Viray, a mother of an incoming Grade 1 pupil.
She said the competitiveness of Filipino graduates could not be measured on the number of years they spend in school.
“Reporma sa sistema ng edukasyon ang kailangan natin at hindi na dapat pahabain pa ang taon ng pagaaral. Matatalino tayong mga Pilipino [pero] may mali lang sa sistema natin,” Viray added.
Veronica Santos, a resident in Barangay Sta. Monica and mother of three students, said most of the public schools in Pampanga are currently experiencing shortage of teachers and classrooms.
With this, she questioned the readiness of DepEd in terms of manpower and infrastructure intervention.
“Kulang na tayo sa classrooms at teachers nagdagdag pa sila ng may tatlong taon sa pag aaral,” she stated.
A public school teacher, who requested not to be identified, told Sun.Star Pampanga that in her classroom, she has more than 60 students.
K+12 aims to address deficiencies in elementary education, as well as enhance the competitiveness of the high school curriculum.
The country’s current 10-year basic education, covering six years of elementary and four years of high school, will stretch to 12 years –- six years of elementary, four years of junior high school (Grade 7 to 10), and two years of senior high school.
