MANILA, Philippines–The boy who attempted to commit suicide after shooting a friend inside a popular shopping mall Tuesday in Pampanga is now in a coma and has been declared brain dead, a radio report said Wednesday.
The family of the 13-year-old, whose identity has been withheld because he is a minor, is now waiting for the results of tests that will determine which organs they can donate before authorizing his doctors to unplug the life support system that has kept the boy alive.
A radio report said that SM Pampanga did its job of ensuring safety inside the mall but its metal detector failed to uncover the pistol used by the boy in the shooting.
Meanwhile, the 17-year-old victim remains in the ICU and is also in a coma, the radio report said.
The circumstances that led to the shooting has remained unclear.

MANILA, Philippines—The 13-year-old boy who attempted to commit suicide after shooting a friend inside SM Pampanga mall Tuesday is pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon, said a report by Jong Manlapaz of 990 AM Radyo Inquirer.
Quoting Dr. Alfonso Danac, head of the emergency department of Jose B. Lingad Memorial Hospital in San Fernando, Pampanga, the report said the boy’s kidney and cornea will be donated to the National Kidney Institute and an eye bank in Metro Manila, respectively.
The family of the 13-year-old, whose identity has been withheld because he is a minor, earlier authorized the doctors to unplug the life support system that has kept the boy alive.
The 17-year-old victim remains in the ICU and considered brain dead.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO—Security was tightened at a mall here where a 13-year-old boy shot a 16-year-old friend then turned the gun on himself.
Millie Dizon, vice president for marketing and communications of SM Supermalls, said in an e-mail statement that security was tightened in all the mall’s entrances after the shooting.
The retail giant also asked police to be more visible in malls. “We also believe that security is everybody’s responsibility,” Dizon said.
Police and the parents of the boys have not filed any complaint or civil suit against the mall.
But Supt. Wilson Santos, chief of police of Mexico town, said there are “no [pieces of] concrete evidence proving their (SM’s and its security firm’s) liabilities.”
How the younger boy obtained the gun, how it was brought in and who owned the weapon are still being established, Santos said. “It is not enough that we recovered the gun,” he added.
Still distraught
The parents of the boys are still distraught and appear to have had no knowledge about their sons’ apparent relationship, said SPO3 Rey Sese, the officer in charge of the case.
Investigators reported finding a suicide note in the pocket of the younger boy suggesting a “lovers’ quarrel.”
In Manila, the head of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) called on security firms to send their guards for training to “enhance their knowledge, skills and attitude.”
Tesda head Joel Villanueva said the training of guards was key to efficient security in malls and other places where security is provided by private firms.

The three dump trucks were part of a convoy heading for Macabebe when the bridge at Colgante village in Apalit collapsed at about 10:15 a.m., police said.
“Aming napagalaman may apat na dump truck papuntang Macabebe, dito sa dinadaanan ang Colgante Bridge. Citing initial information reaching him, he said the bridge was about 10 feet above the water below.
The trucks were carrying gravel at the time the bridge collapsed.

CLARK FREEPORT — Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia has relayed her plan to run for senator during the Mothers’ Day celebration at the SM City Clark on Sunday.
“This is my first time to announce my political plan outside of Cebu and it is here in Pampanga,” Garcia said.
Calling for the province’s support to her slate under the One Cebu party, Garcia said she will institute creative and effective programs and bring them to the national level.
Garcia said Cebu’s 2.5 million voting population and her nine-year experience as governor will be of great help in her bid.
“I hope One Cebu will take my bid, a bid not just to put a Cebuana in the Senate but for all,” she said.
She also cited some of her agenda on water; power; health; education; agriculture; business; tourism, culture; environment; peace and order; and others.
Garcia said she formed an alliance with Vice President Jejomar Binay’s United Nationalist Alliance, a coalition of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan, and former President Joseph Estrada and his Partido ng Masang Pilipino.
Angeles City Councilor Maricel Morales invited her to keynote the 5th Gawad sa Marangal at Ulirang Ina on Mothers’ Day at the SM City-Clark.
Morales honors and awards special mothers annually and this year she picked government employees as awardees saying “charity begins at home.”
Some 25 employees and department heads, including City Librarian Norma Razon, Social Welfare head Heidi Patio and Peso head Adelina Deocales, were awarded during the event.
