STA. ANA — Third District Representative Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales Jr. and Butil Farmers Party Representative Agapito Guanlao led the awarding over the weekend of some four farmer achievers, three farmer cooperatives and two agri-entrepreneurs during the recent Farmers Congress.
The awarding is part of the initiative of the Municipal Government in recognizing the achievements of farmers in helping uplift the standard of living of their respective families and their contribution to the community’s development and progress.
The awardees were farmers Roque Vercasion (San Agustin), Perfecto David (San Pablo), Amelito Miranda (San Pablo) and Mario Mallari (Sto. Rosario). The farmers were selected based on the years they have devoted to farming along with their various achievements in commercial farming.
Also given awards in the event was the Guran Sapa Multi-Purpose Cooperative which was adjudged as Outstanding Cooperative for this year.
Centro Mauli Service Irrigator’s Association was named Outstanding Irrigator’s Association, while the Sta. Ana Public Elementary School Multi-Purpose Cooperative was also named Outstanding Cooperative for 2012.
Meanwhile, Manuel Calderon was named as this year’s Department of Agriculture Awardee along with Rodolfo Buan who was recognized as Outstanding Agri-Entrepreneur.
Gonzales said the awards will further inspire farmers and cooperatives here to do better with their work and help in the development and progress of their respective barangays.
His office, he said, is continuously providing assistance to farmers and their families.
There are also institutionalize programs like fund subsidies for cooperatives and fund assistance for agri-entrepreneurs, he said.
“Farmer groups and cooperatives can coordinate with our office so that we can identify programs that would best fit their needs,” Gonzales said.
Guanlao, for his part, said the farmers and cooperatives should maintain close coordination with government line agencies for assistances and available programs.
He said Butil is facilitating such programs and is also giving fund assistances to farmers.
Butil is also giving medical and financial assistances to farmers and their families aside from scholarships given to children of farmers and indigents. (Ian Ocampo Flora)

CLARK FREEPORT — Colorful and specially crafted kites filled the air inside the Freeport when Bear Brand held the second leg of its Kite Festival 2012 last Saturday.
Some 90 participants in at least three divisions – kids (28 entries), young adults (31 entries), family (31 entries) — joined in the kite-flying competition.
Hundreds of kite enthusiasts from as far as Isabela, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Laguna, Metro Manila, and other parts of Luzon witnessed the family-oriented sports event.
Jasmine Estacio, Consumer Marketing Manager for Bear Brand Powdered Milk Drink, said the project is aimed at strengthening family ties.
She said the Kite Association of the Philippines (KAP), headed by president Orly Ongkiko, recommended Clark as a good venue for the activity.
“The KAP told us that there are many kite enthusiasts here in Pampanga and Clark,” Estacio said.
Prior to the event, Estacio said they conducted two sessions of kite-making workshop and actual kite flying in Macapagal Village, Mabalacat town.
Named winners for the kids division are Edison Agudong, 11, from Isabela (3rd place, Kuya Bear kite design, P2,000); Hernando Catabas, 13, from Isabela (2nd place, Bear Brand design, P3,000); and Renz Brian, 12, from Tarlac (1st place, Gorion Kite, P5,000).
For the young adult division, winners were Randy Gueco from City of San Fernando (3rd place, geometric kite, P 2,000); Mark Malazo from City of San Fernando (2nd, manananggal design, P3,000); and Jerwin Erasga from Calamba, Laguna (1st, open frame geometric design, P5,000).
Meanwhile, winners for the family division were Adfill Tuazon from Mabalacat (3rd, flying anaconda design, P4,000); Edgar Clemento from Pateros, (2nd, Dragon design, P6,000) and John Camato from Mabalacat, (1st, Compound Box Type, P10,000).

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Governor Lilia Pineda urged on Monday her fellow government officials and Capitol employees to follow the example of Jose Abad Santos in placing the welfare of the people first above personal comfort and gains.
Pineda made this call after the wreath laying ceremonies Monday in honor of the 70th death anniversary of Jose Abad Santos at the Capitol Grounds here.
Pineda led government employees and officials in presenting flowers to the monument of Jose Abad Santos.
This was followed by a reading of the biographical sketch of Abad Santos and poetry reading rendered by Poet Laureate Romeo Rodriguez (Prinsipe ning Parnaso). Excerpts of the life of Abad Santos were presented in a creative dance number by the members of Sinukuan Kapampangan.
Pineda said Abad Santos is an example of a man who would risk life and limb for the common people.
She said such attitude should be displayed by government officials and employees in the simple ways of doing their work faithfully and with whole-hearted dedication.
“The life of Abad Santos should be an inspiration for us in government. Serving the people rain or shine is the way to do it. One does not need to die for one’s country in today’s time, one can display love of one’s country through little acts of courage and loyalty in government service,” Pineda told Sun.Star Pampanga.
Pineda said the commemoration also aims to make Kapampangans aware of the heroism of Abad Santos.
Chief Justice Jose Abad Santos is considered the greatest Filipino hero of World War II. He was among the greatest legal luminaries of the Philippines.
After completing his law studies in the United States as a government-sponsored scholar, he was also assigned for a few years in the Department of Justice. He was appointed later as the first Filipino corporate lawyer of the Philippine National Bank, Manila Railroad and other government corporations.
Moving on his professional career, he was recalled at the Department of Justice as Attorney General then to the position of Secretary of Justice.
In recognition of the brilliance and dedication to government service of Secretary Abad Santos, President Manuel L. Quezon of the Philippine Commonwealth appointed him later as Justice in the Supreme Court and eventually as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
At the outbreak of World War II, Quezon temporarily moved the seat of Philippine government to the USA.
Together with Vice President Sergio Osmeña and other cabinet members, they escaped by submarine from the invading Japanese Imperial Forces as General Douglas MacArthur transferred his general headquarters to Australia to re-organize the Allied Forces.
Abad Santos chose to remain in the Philippines as caretaker of the national government administration in the Philippines.
The Japanese Military Command repeatedly approached him to make him pledge allegiance to Japan and to the Japanese flag but he did not swear in. A Japanese colonel and his troops overtook him in Lanao and he was told that he would be shot to death if he would not swear allegiance to the Japanese flag.
He did not comply with the request of the Japanese so he was executed on May 2, 1942 in Malabang, Lanao del Sur in Mindanao. Before he was shot to death, he was able to talk to his young son, Jose, Jr. and his last parting words were “Do not cry, Jr., show to these people that you are brave. It is an honor to die for one’s country. Not everybody has that chance.”

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Livelihood beneficiaries from Central Luzon recently received a total of P7.2 million in grants from the government’s Integrated Livelihood Program (ILP).
The ILP is a concerted effort of the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole)-Central Luzon, Public Employment Service Offices, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (Owwa), National Reintegration Center Office (NRCO) and other line agencies like the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda).
According to labor communications officer Jerry Borja, about 5,583 individuals composed of workers from the formal and informal sectors, workers’ associations, Tesda graduates and other informal groups are the beneficiaries.
Borja added that the OWWA-NRCO also granted P 1.9 million for 190 overseas Filipino workers repatriates and their families.
He said regional labor director Raymundo Agravante thanked other partners in the program like local government units, SM Supermalls and tri-media for boosting the ILP.
Meanwhile, Borja disclosed that Dole-Central Luzon livelihood beneficiaries netted P29,921in product sales during the livelihood fair held last May 1.

CAMP OLIVAS — The body of a woman was found inside a white sack at a rice field along the San Miguel-Concepcion Road in San Simon town, a police report said Tuesday.
According to the police, the still unidentified victim was more or less 25 years old and 5’4” in height.
Investigations revealed that passersby over the weekend noticed a white sack in a vacant rice field along the road. The sack, they said, produced foul odor. When opened, they discovered the dead body inside.
Police reports said the victim was naked and her body and arms were hogtied with a nylon rope.
The body of the victim was in the state of decomposition when found by the San Simon police.
It was surmised that the woman was a rape victim and was killed after.
