ANGELES CITY — Pampanga furniture and other products are being lined up for export to South Korea, business groups here said.
A delegation recently toured the province and visited the top manufacturers.
Erdy Feliciano, co-owner of Calfurn Manufacturing Phils. Inc., said developing a market abroad would be boon to the local economy.
“We hope to start business there,” he said, noting that selling abroad would expand its workforce of 3,000 people.
The Korean business delegation also visited Deretso, in Barangay Del Rosario, City of San Fernando along with More Than a Chair Inc., JB Woodcrafts and Betis Crafts Inc., all in Barangay Betis, Guagua town.
Lydia Rivera, chief of business development of Department of Trade and Industry-Pampanga, said province’s artisans exported furniture worth US$19.56 million last year compared to US$16.44 million in 2010.
Pampanga furniture and woodcraft are known for their intricate, classic designs, craftsmanship exemplified by generations of homegrown carvers.
She said the market abroad was promising for local products.
Deretso, JB Woodcraft and More than a Chair participated in last years’ China International Furniture Expo after they were picked by Fairs and More Inc., to represent Pampanga.

ANGELES CITY — The City Council is set to conduct an investigation on alleged irregularities in the issuance of fire clearances by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) here.
This stemmed from a complaint filed by Fatima Salvo, proprietor of Notes and Rhythms School of Music, before the City Council.
Salvo informed the councilors that a representative of a fire extinguisher firm visited the school and acted as if he was officially sent by the BFP.
In connection to this, agents of fire extinguisher manufacturers have been going around business establishments and name-dropping fire officers to sell their wares.
Vice Mayor Maria Vicenta Vega Cabigting said she will conduct an inquiry regarding the alleged misrepresentations being made by fire extinguisher agents.
The vice mayor thanked Salvo for airing her complaint regarding the irregularity.
Councilor Maricel Morales said she has been receiving complaints from businessmen in connection with the issue since February.
The councilor called for an en banc committee hearing and asked for the invitation of the fire extinguisher dealers.
Chief Inspector Gary Alto, city fire marshall, denied that his office sends agents to business establishments to sell fire extinguishers.
Salvo and Alto appeared during the last council session and had a faceoff. But Alto claimed that businessmen may choose which manufacturers will supply them fire extinguishers.
Alto also said firemen are not authorized to recommend or sell fire extinguishers to traders applying for fire clearance.
Councilor Jesus Sangil asked the council to invite various traders’ organizations including the Metro Angeles Chamber of Commerce and Industry Incorporate during an en banc committee hearing scheduled on May 8.

PORAC, Pampanga (AFP) – Arnel Valencia felt humiliated at school when he was barred from using the language he spoke at home, part of a decades-long pattern of linguistic destruction across the Philippines.
“‘Stop talking like a bird. You should use English or the national language,” Valencia, now 39 and a village elder, said his first-grade teacher told him.
Valencia belongs to a small mountain tribe called Ayta Magindi that has for centuries inhabited the bone-dry, sparsely forested Zambales mountains just 3 hours’ drive from the nation’s megacity capital, Manila.
There are only 3,000 tribe members left living in and around the small sugar farming town of Porac, guardians to one of the dozens of little-known languages in the Southeast Asian archipelago that are under dire threat.
The Philippines, with 95 million people, is home to 175 languages, but some of them have just a few speakers left while others are already considered extinct because there are no more people at all who converse in them.
Up to 50 of the country’s minor languages could be lost within 20 years, according to Artemio Barbosa, chief anthropologist at the Philippine National Museum.
“When they migrate to a certain place and they are assimilated, they no longer speak their own language because their main concern is to have an intelligible language that they can speak everyday,” Barbosa told AFP.

The Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation (PDIC), the Receiver of the closed First Provincial Bank, Inc. (A Rural Bank) reminded borrowers of said bank to continue to pay their loans and transact only with authorized PDIC representatives.
In a statement, PDIC said that loan repayments should be made only to the PDIC Deputy Receiver or the Assisting Deputy Receiver stationed at the bank premises, or deposited to the designated Philippine National Bank (PNB) accounts. It further advised borrowers to keep copies of the PNB Payment Slips. The Receiver said that only payments duly validated by the PNB would be considered valid payments for loans.
The Monetary Board (MB) placed the First Provincial Bank under receivership of the PDIC by virtue of MB Resolution No. 592 dated April 19, 2012. As Receiver, PDIC took over the bank on April 20,2012. Upon takeover, all bank records shall be gathered, verified and validated.
First Provincial Bank is a four-unit bank with Head Office located along McArthur Highway corner Juan Luna St., Tarlac City. Its three branches are in Mabalacat, Pampanga; Paniqui, Tarlac; and La Trinidad, Benguet. DESPITE earlier promises on returns of investment, the fertilizer byproduct of the multimillion peso Environmental Recycling System has not been selling.
While not really explicating of zero sales from fertilizers, Mayor Mauricio Domogan said sales from fertilizers produced by the machines has not been picking up.
The city is only now holding on to the promise of Protech Machineries Corporation, the waste solution provider contracted by the city, to buy the compost at P6 to P8 per kilo as per the memorandum of agreement it signed with the city.
The mayor said the permit to sell fertilizer has not been granted by the Fertilizer and Pesticide Administration under the Department of Agriculture.
This, he said, is despite several testing requirements already submitted, including the procurement of sacks to be used to package the fertilizers.
Aside from the low turnout of fertilizer sales, the city is also having problems operating the ERS machines after one of the broilers is malfunctioning, Domogan disclosed Wednesday.
The City Environment and Parks Management Office is currently conducting alternate feeding of biodegradable wastes on the ERS machines while the broiler problems are being fixed.
Mayor Domogan also said a representative of the National Solid Waste Management Commission recently visited the city to resolve and explain the definition of residual wastes.
At present, the City Government has been dumping residual wastes in a private lot in Capas, Tarlac while biodegradable wastes are being processed by the ERS machines inside the Irisan dumpsite facility.
