Muslim group turns over fiesta sponsorship

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Lanao Muslims Traders Association (LMTA) of the City of San Fernando handed to the 2012 Fiestang Fernandino Executive Committee half of its sponsorship for the month-long festivities in May.
The LMTA annually holds the “Pyestang Tiangge” along Jose Abad Santos Street in this city, where goods and merchandise from Mindanao and other Muslim countries are put on sale at low prices.
The P300,000 is 50 percent of the sponsorship of P600,000. The other half would be turned over to the Fiesta Executive Committee before the start of activities on May 14.
Apart from the P600,000 sponsorship, the LMTA said they would also turn over P200,000 for the city’s scholarship programs.
Aside from the flea and market fair, this year’s fiesta celebration themed “Pyestang Fernandino, dalerayan ning kulturang pasulungan,” features a host of cultural events like the usual Lakan at Mutya, Flores De Mayo, historical exhibit, serenata, tilbury race, cycling caravan, fun run, Fernandinos Got Talent and many more.

Lawmaker, guv forge pact for dialysis center

ANGELES CITY — Representative Carmelo Lazatin (1st district, Pampanga) and Governor Lilia Pineda have signed a memorandum of agreement for the creation of the Mabalacat Dialysis Center.
Lazatin said the dialysis center will benefit thousands of residents from the towns of Mabalacat and Magalang and Angeles City.
Lazatin will allocate P1.5 million funds from his Priority Development Assistance Fund and will channel it to the Public Works department District Engineering Office.
Pineda said the Provincial Government will earmark an additional P14 million to complete the project.
The Provincial Government will also provide the dialysis center the additional equipment needed.
Lazatin during his term has filed bills providing free medical services to the poor, senior citizens and the youth.
Among the services are free professional fee of attending physicians and free annual physical examination for senior citizens, including x-rays, computerized tomography scans, cardiac stress tests, endoscopy and ultrasound on kidneys.
Mabalacat Mayor Marino Morales witnessed the agreement signing. They were joined by Public Works department district engineering office head Jesus Obordo, Board Members Cris Garbo, Tarz Halili (1st district); Fritzie Dizon (2nd District) and Raul Macalino and Monina Laus (3rd district).

Guv eyes development of Mt. Arayat natural falls

ARAYAT — Governor Lilia Pineda has expressed interest to develop the facilities and natural resources of the Mt. Arayat National Park, including its natural spring and waterfalls.
The Provincial Government is inclined in developing the dilapidated facilities of the national park, including swimming pools, cottages, function hall and administrative building.
Pineda said with the development of the resources, the national park has the potential to re-emerge as the number one tourist destination in Central Luzon.
The Provincial Government and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) recently had talks regarding the plans of the department to either co-manage the natural park or give the full responsibility to the local government unit.
Pineda expressed her willingness to develop the full tourism potential of the national park as part of her eco-tourism program in the province.
“I am very much willing to bring back the glorious days of Mt. Arayat National Park and with the help of the people here and the municipality of Arayat, we can do it,” she said.
However, the governor said the national park has a little problem on informal settlers who mushroomed inside the park.

Groups join ‘Piestang Ilug’ celebration

PORAC — Cause-oriented groups and sports clubs joined Saturday’s celebration of the Piestang Ilug (Feast of the River).
The celebration also aims to help in the conservation and protection of the river system other natural resources here.
Hermie Pineda, event organizer, said the Piestang Ilug is also a celebration of life’s resources.
The event started at the town river here where the groups held a short program and orientation on the event.
Town councilor Mike Tapang, an ardent supporter, said the event allowed people of Porac to be aware of their river and rally for its protection and preservation.
The program included a “Bikathon for a cause,” clean-up drive and picnics by the river.
Participating organizations included the Nagkakaisang Mamamayan para sa Agrikultura at Kalikasan, Concerned Citizens of Porac, Municipality of Porac and SAP Riders and Bikers from Pampanga.

Fight vs illegal recruitment intensified

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Provincial Government and Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) joined forces for the intensification of the campaign against illegal recruitment in Pampanga.
Governor Lilia Pineda and POEA officials are set to forge a memorandum of understanding (MOU) this week to curb illegal recruitment incidents in the province.
The Provincial Government said the joint program will involve the participation of all stakeholders from the national, provincial and municipal levels.
The program is aimed at making the province illegal recruitment-free. A massive information campaign will become part of the activities that will reach the grassroots level.
The MOU will be signed by the governor, POEA administrator Hans Leo J. Cacdac, Overseas Workers Welfare office Administrator Carmelita Dimzon, and Labor department Regional Director Raymundo Agravante, among others.

Crucifixion ‘Star’ Nears End Of His Vow

SAN FERNANDO CITY, Pampanga – Ruben Enaje is near the end of his 27-year vow.
Enaje will be nailed to the cross for the 26th straight year today, Good Friday.
The “crucifixion” of Enaje and 20 other penitents has been the high point of the Good Friday observance in Barangay San Pedro Cutud, an event that draws thousands of the devout and the curious to the small village.
But the 51-year-old artist feels he is getting too old to continue the ritual. “I can already feel my body complaining,” Enaje told the Manila Bulletin in Filipino.
He looked at the huge wooden cross that he keeps in his workplace. “This will be my retirement cross. I put my heart into making this because this will be part of my last performance next year,” he said.
Next year he will have completed his 27-year vow – nine years for each member of his family.
“I think 27 years is enough… I have already told the organizers of the activity of my plan,” Enaje said.
Being nailed to the cross is his way of thanking God after he survived a fall from a three-storey building in 1985.
Remigio dela Cruz, barangay captain of San Pedro Cutud, said it would be difficult to find a replacement for Enaje.
“Every year, there are at least 14 persons being nailed here. What makes it difficult for us is to find someone with as good character as Ben’s (Enaje),” said dela Cruz.
The first time he was nailed to the cross in 1986, Enaje said he felt more excited than nervous, and even watched as the nails were driven into his palms.
“Being chosen to play the role of Jesus comes with a responsibility, and that includes being a role model for the entire community,” he said.
Enaje said one other reason he is quitting is the pressure from his neighbors who expect him to lead by example.
“One time, I shouted at a group of children playing in front of my house because they were very noisy and they were disturbing me, I was confronted later by one of the parents,” Enaje said.
“They said someone who is nailed to the cross like Jesus Christ should not be ill-mannered,” he said.
He said his neighbors also accuse him of longing for media attention and making money out of the ritual.
“Every time the media visited me for an interview, some people here would immediately ask how much was given to me as payment for an interview,” said Enaje.
Enaje said he had enough blessings to think of exploiting his vow.
Aside from the protection he and his family have been receiving from God, he said he has enough means to buy a small truck and a tricycle.
He also makes money from applying letters on streamers.
Enaje lamented what he described as the “commercialization” of the ritual.
He said he knew of at least three persons who had sold their performances in other parts of Luzon. One of them almost lost his right arm because of an infection, the other one was ostracized in the community since he would usually run wild after having a drink too many, and the third drowned in two-inch deep water.
Adriel Aguilar, of the San Fernando City Tourism Office, said the reenactment of Christ’s crucifixion in the barangay started in 1955 as part of the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross), a tableau based on the passion of the Christ written by Ricardo Navarro.
In 1962 when a quack doctor from the nearby Apalit town had himself nailed to the cross to fulfill his vision of becoming a religious leader and a full-fledged healer.
“Since then, not a year has passed without an actual crucifixion taking place during reenactment,” said Aguilar.
He said Navarro’s involvement in the tableau was passed on to his son Ricardo then to his grandson Allan who is the present director of the play.
Enaje took the lead role in the early 1990s and drew the attention of foreign communities via the internet.
It became so popular that some foreigners also had themselves nailed to the cross.
In 2006 a European, however, opted out just as was about to be nailed.
At least 20 penitents are scheduled to be crucified today.
There were advanced crucifixions. Last Wednesday, three penitents were nailed into crosses in Barangay Manibaug in Porac town.
Pampanga Archbishop Paciano Aniceto said the Church disapproves of the ritual.
“The Church does not want you to punish yourself with physical sufferings. Sincere reflection and doing good things to your neighbors are more important,” Aniceto said.
CBCP President and Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma echoed Aniceto’s view, saying that the Church would rather have people renewing their faith than inflicting pain on themselves.
“While we are trying to discourage these practices we cannot also judge their intention, especially those who have made it as their vow,” Palma said.
Palma said the Church would rather have the faithful focus on the spiritual aspect of their lives than on external manifestations of their faith.
“We do not judge and condemn [the practice] but we discourage it,” he added.

10,000 jobs up for grabs in Labor Day fair

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) regional office said an estimated 10,000 jobs will be up for grabs in the upcoming Central Luzon Labor Day Job and Livelihood Fair on May 1.
The fair will be held at the Dole regional office located at the government center in Barangay Maimpis, this city.
Regional Director Raymundo Agravante said aside from the thousands of job vacancies, a display of livelihood products of the labor department’s various beneficiaries will also be showcased in venues all over the region.
This year’s 110th Labor Day celebration, themed “Pagtutulungan, Pagbabago, Disenteng Trabaho,” is streamlined with President Benigno Aquino III’s 16 point Social Contract with the Filipino people, as well as the Dole’s mandate in providing full, decent, productive employment for every Filipino, said Agravante.
He added that a total of 360 companies will participate in the job and livelihood fairs all over Central Luzon. Some 254 firms will provide local employment while 106 employers will hire job seekers for overseas employment.
Participating companies from various industries include the Business Processing Outsourcing (BPOs), malls, small and medium enterprises, retail, services, and manufacturing firms from economic zones, among others, said Agravante.
Some of the venues for the simultaneous job and livelihood fairs include the People’s Center in Balanga City, Bataan; SM Malls in Marilao and Baliwag, Bulacan, Pampanga, Clark, Olongapo and Tarlac; Camp Servillano Aquino in Tarlac City; and the Provincial Government centers of Nueva Ecija and Zambales.
Agravante said he is hopeful that the Dole will achieve the target on applicants’ hired on the spot, which will account for at least 15 percent of the total registered applicants.

Tourism office asked to support a Disneyland plan in Clark

ANGELES CITY – Representative Carmelo “Tarzan” Lazatin (1st district, Pampanga) has sought the support of the Department of Tourism (DOT) for his plan to set up a Disneyland theme park inside the Clark Freeport.
“This endeavor, if successful, would bring in more visitors to the country and make the Philippines as one of the best, if not the best, tourist destinations in the world,” Lazatin said in his letter to DOT Secretary Ramon Jimenez.
Lazatin was referring to his request to Walt Disney to consider Clark as the next destination of the world-famous entertainment site.
Lazatin said a Disneyland at Clark Freeport would help boost the number of visitors in the country and strengthen the tourism department’s campaign to increase government revenue through tourism.
Recently, Jimenez launched “It’s More Fun in the Philippines”, the Aquino government’s new tourism slogan and program aimed at increasing the number of tourist arrivals in the country.
In his letter, Lazatin also informed Jimenez that he wrote Thomas Staggs, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts chairman, presenting Clark Freeport Zone as a viable location for a Disneyland theme park.
“In my letter, I informed the leadership of Walt Disney that Clark Freeport Zone is an ideal site for a Disneyland theme park with its 4,400 hectare main zone and 27,600-hectare subzone,” Lazatin said.
Lazatin informed the Walt Disney management that Clark can be an attractive destination for Disneyland theme park because of the tax-free privileges given to locators.
“In addition, I notified them that Clark Freeport Zone also has its own world-class airport and hotels which can accommodate the influx of foreign and local tourists,” Lazatin’s told Jimenez.
At present, Walt Disney has theme parks in Hong Kong and Tokyo.
Lazatin, at the same time, extended Jimenez his congratulations on the success and achievements the DOT has been reaping since taking the reins of the department.
“Allow me to congratulate you on the success and achievements that the Department of Tourism has been reaping under your leadership, especially the “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” campaign which has attracted millions of tourists to the Filipino since its inception,” Lazatin said.

Robbery gang leader, 2 cohorts killed in Angeles City shootout

MANILA, Philippines—A leader of an organized crime group notorious for robbery hold-up activities in Pampanga and Tarlac, along with two of his members, were killed in an alleged pre-dawn shootout with police Sunday in Angeles City, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) said Monday.
CIDG chief, Police Director Samuel Pagdilao Jr., identified the slain members of the Dan Muslim Gang as Bonifacio Lacson, 27; Gilbert Natividad, 23; and Jayson Nardo. CIDG said the group was about to rob a gasoline station in the city when they engaged in a gun-running battle with police.
Pampanga CIDG chief, Police Chief Inspector Fernando Cunanan Jr., said that a member of the Community Investigative Support tipped the CIDG last Saturday that the group was planning to rob a businesswoman engaged in a cellular phone business at GENRA Mall in Angeles City. But due to the presence of mall guards, the suspects opted to instead rob the Sea Oil Gasoline Station located at Henson Ville Subdivision, Angeles City.
When the suspects, who disguised as customers, arrived at the gas station around 4:30 a.m. Sunday on board two motorcycles, one of the suspects sped off after sensing the police were in the area. This prompted authorities to give chase.
When they got to Robinsons Homes, the suspects allegedly fired at the CIDG operatives, which eventually led to a running gun battle. One of the suspects was hit while the two others fell several meters from the first suspect.
Another suspect, the driver of the motorcycle, however, escaped. CIDG have recovered two .38 caliber revolvers, a dagger, and an ice pick near the suspects.
Pagdilao said Nardo became the new leader of the Dan Muslim Gang after its former leader, Danilo Paredes a.k.a Dan Muslim, got arrested last year for the killing of Kang Ha Yong, a Korean national and resident of Angeles City.
The group, he said, has been included in CIDG’s watch-list of crime groups engaged in robbery holdup and gun-for-hire activities in areas of Pampanga and Tarlac.
