Private recruitment agency to hold jobs fair at capitol

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – A private recruitment agency will be holding jobs fair on April 24 at the Provincial Capitol grounds here.
PhilAfrica Technical Resources, Inc., a licensed recruitment agency for overseas Filipino workers, is scheduled to accept job applications from qualified Kapampangan laborers, engineers, accountants and other construction workers.
Provincial Public Employment Services Office (Peso) head Luningning Vergara disclosed that some 400 job vacancies in the Republic of Angola await qualified applicants from various municipalities of the province.
Vergara said that the recruitment agency’s general manager and recruitment officers will personally conduct the pre-screening and interview of applicants.
The job vacancies include civil, geodetic and electrical engineers, linemen, industrial electricians, air conditioning technicians, plumbers, masons, auto and electronic technicians, diesel engine fitters and mechanics, power station supervisors, carpenters, cold storage supervisors, CAD and crane operators, riggers, metal works erectors, camp managers, quantity surveyors, tool keepers and marine technicians.
Accountants, computer data encoders, purchasing agents, drivers and mechanics of heavy equipment, health and safety environment officers, cooks, tinsmiths, welders, stock controllers, pipe fitters, telecom and information technology support technicians are also needed.
“Successful applicants will be employed by eight companies based in the Republic of Angola with salaries ranging from $800 to $2,200 US dollars.”
A processing fee of P5,000 will be required each successful applicant as well as his one-month salary as placement fee, deductible from his salary.
The recruitment activity will start at 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The applicants were advised to bring their resume, certificates of employment, passports, National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and police clearances and other pertinent documents.
The said public employment office made the necessary coordination with the Philippine Overseas Employment Association which cleared the recruitment agency as a duly licensed entity.
The holding of special recruitment activities is one of the strategies utilized by Peso in line with the desire of Governor Lilia G. Pineda of providing ample local and overseas job opportunities to qualified individuals in the province, Vergara pointed out.

Philippine Disneyland to rise soon in Clark, Pampanga?

Pampanga 1st District Representative Carmelo “Tarzan” Lazatin wrote to Robert Iger, chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Company, asking him to consider Clark, Pampanga as their next Walt Disney park. He cited that the Clark’s 4,400 hectare main zone and 27,600-hectare subzone will be perfect for a new Disneyland park.
Further, he added that that the tax-free privileges given to locators at the Clark Freeport Zone could be attractive destination for Disneyland theme park. Lazatin also cited Clark International Airport, world-class airport which is expected to serve at least P1.6-million passengers this year. He said in in his letter that the airport will be making it easier for tourists to enjoy the amenities and entertainment Disneyland is famous for without the hassles of long travels.
Apart from the airport which will offer convenience to visitors, the hotel accommodations will not be a problem as Clark has the best hotels, where visitors can likely enjoy the Filipino hospitality.
The lawmaker said the Philippines is a favorite tourist destination in Southeast Asia, with an average arrival of four million foreign visitors a year and for 2012, the government is eyeing to hit the 5-million mark.

Pampanga church keeps treasures in digital form

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO—How did Roman Catholic churches in Pampanga appear in 1790? What are the entries in a Bacolor baptismal book dated 1680 and widely believed to be the oldest in the Philippines? How exactly did early Kapampangans live their faith?
The answers, and many more glimpses of the past, can be found in the digital collection of Spanish-era documents and photographs in the care of the Archdiocesan Archives of San Fernando (AASF) in Pampanga.
Consisting of more than 15,000 digital pages and ready for browsing after Holy Week at the University of the Assumption (UA) in the City of San Fernando and at the Holy Angel University in Angeles City, the AASF is a big contribution to scholarship and spread of Kapampangan culture and history, Archbishop Paciano Aniceto said at the launch on March 20.
The hard copy of the collection bears his official seal through molten wax.
For the live testing, the 75-year-old Aniceto, who does not own and avoids using mobile phones, sat down before a computer, clicked the mouse a few times and shortly gained access to the files of Candaba, the neighbor of his hometown Sta. In digitizing portions of the AASF, the Archdiocese of San Fernando became the first archdiocese in the Philippines to go digital in preserving its archives, Prof. Regalado Trota Jose, head of the committee on archives of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), said during the launch.
“You have provided the lead,” Jose said. The first congregation to have digitized its archives is the Order of Augustinian Recollects in Manila, he said.
The Pampanga initiative had its roots as early as 1979 when then Archbishop Oscar Cruz established the archdiocesan museum and in 1983, and the AASF with the help of Jose and the late Benedictine nun Paz Katigbak. Kept at the Mater Boni seminary, the archives had been inaccessible to the public.
The digitization work took a year and four months to finish on a grant from the NCCA, and guidance from the Archdiocesan Commission on Church Heritage chaired by Auxiliary Bishop Pablo Virgilio David.

The original materials or microfilms have been obtained from Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila Archives, National Archives of the Philippines, Luther Parker Collection of the National Library of the Philippines, Venancio Q. Samson Collection and Filipinas Heritage Library Collection.
The AASF has more than 200,000 original, handwritten pages in its possession that are waiting to be digitized, David said.
A catalog has been printed for an orderly search and access.
Much of the materials, he said, captured the history of Christianity in Pampanga since 1572 when Augustinian friars evangelized in Betis and Lubao; 1579 when Pampanga was placed under the suffragan of Manila, then a diocese of Mexico; and 1595 when Pampanga remained among the 10 provinces under the Archdiocese of Manila.
The materials also gave a glimpse of the creation of the Diocese of San Fernando in 1948 and the formation of the Archdiocese of San Fernando in 1975 when the dioceses of Tarlac, Balanga and Iba were placed under it.
“We want to foster greater understanding of Pampanga heritage and culture,” said David on why the project was undertaken. “These are treasures.”
“Modern technology secured these for future generations,” said Auxiliary Bishop Roberto Mallari, UA president and who was assigned to set up the Center of Kapampangan Church Heritage.
This was appropriate, Mallari said, because the province produced many church pioneers.
They include Rufino Cardinal Santos (first Filipino cardinal), Don Diego Guinto (first native founder of perpetual pious trust funds or capellañas), Don Miguel Jeronimo de Morales (first native priest), Sor Bibiana Zapanta (first missionary nun sent to help evangelize Mindanao) and Sor Asuncion Ventura (first native to found an orphanage).

Over 100 pirated software installers seized in Pampanga

PAMPANGA — THE Pilipinas Anti-Piracy Team (PAPT) led by the Optical Media Board (OMB) resumed its Northern Luzon anti-software piracy campaign and confiscated more than 100 pirated software installers allegedly used by computer retail stores in Pampanga.

Last month, the PAPT started its Northern Luzon sweep by inspecting businesses operating in Pampanga and Zambales and found numerous cases of under-licensing among various banks, schools and other commercial establishments.

Marian enthusiasts to host exhibit in San Simon

SAN SIMON — Various religious collectors and enthusiasts of Marian images from this town will gather for the first ever Marian Exhibit Festival at the Parish of San Pedro, San Simon here from April 26-30.
The event is organized by Dr. Marline Balagtas in a bid to showcase religious art through the wealth religious images devoted to the different iconographies of the Virgin Mary.
Other organizers of the event include religious image collectors Eduardo de Jesus, Carlos Diokno, Patrick Glenn Banal and Nilo Dagdag who were able to bring together some 30 images for the exhibit.
The grand opening of the exhibit is on April 26. The event is open to the public and welcomes group visits from religious and laity groups.
“This event is a showcase of the bets iconographies of Mary. They are not just images of veneration they are also a showcase of Kapampangan artistry in terms of religious art. The vestments, metal works and sculptures show the ingenuity of Kapampangan artists who made these images” Patrick Glenn Banal told Sun.Star Pampanga.
The event will culminate in a grand procession on April 30 at 4 p.m.

Angeles university to honor UP prexy

ANGELES CITY — University of the Philippines president Alfredo E. Pascual will be honored during the commencement exercises of Angeles University Foundation (AUF) on April 21.
AUF president Joseph Emmanuel L. Angeles said the school will confer upon Pascual a honorary doctorate degree in Pedagogy in recognition of his outstanding contributions to education having previously served as faculty and lecturer at the Ateneo de Manila University from 1973 to 1978 and the Asian Institute of Management from 1980 to 1989.
In his incumbency as UP’s 20th president, he is responsible in overseeing fifteen campuses across the country with more than fifty thousand students and fourteen thousand faculty and staff.
Pascual pioneered initiatives in the Asia-Pacific Region when he assumed important positions at the Asian Development Bank from 1989 to 2008 responsible in addressing the emerging financial and investment needs of Asia.
In recognition of his numerous accomplishments, he was presented the following awards: Presidential Achievement Award by the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines in 1981 and 1983; Certificate of Recognition for Exemplary Performance by the Asian Development Bank in 2000; Project of the Year Award for the North Luzon Expressway by the Project Finance International, London in 2001; Innovation Award for the SME Sector Development Program in Pakistan by the Asian Development Bank in 2003; and Distinguished Alumnus Award by the UP College of Business Administration in 2009.

AirAsia launches daily flights to Puerto Princesa

CLARK FREEPORT — The Philippines’ AirAsia, the country’s newest low cost carrier, launched Saturday its maiden flight from Clark International Airport to Puerto Princesa City, Palawan with an all-in low fare from P799 one way.
