STO.TOMAS — “It’s really getting to be more fun in Sto. Tomas!”
This was the common cheer on Sunday afternoon as hundreds of locals, out-of-town visitors and some foreign tourists mobbed the streets of this town to get a view of what they branded as a grander “Sabuaga Festival.”
The annual Easter Sunday festival of “scattered flowers” is on its third year, after being revived by the local government unit, church leaders and lay officials.
It is highlighted by town beauties showering petals on the image of the Virgin Mary in the tradition of the “Salubong.”
“We wanted to give a deeper meaning to the festival this year in tribute to Easter Sunday, so we made it grander with the participation of all our seven barangays. Our intention was for the town to be a place people can go to after the Holy Week and get a glimpse of what Sto. Tomas has to offer in terms of tourism, culture, arts and religion,” Mayor Lito Naguit said.
He said to make Sabuaga Festival 2012 more fun, the town’s premier products like pottery, caskets as well as agricultural produce were put on exhibit and sale.
Another highlight, Naguit said, was the enhanced street dance competition, preceded by the calesa parade.
“We thank all Tomasians and our friends for always supporting the Sabuaga Festival. Next year, we promise to bring you more and make true to our promise that it is more fun in Sto. Tomas!” Naguit said.

CANDABA — The municipal health office (MHO) here got poor remarks in terms of tuberculosis case detection rate (TDR) for 2011, as it was ranked last among the health offices in all the municipalities in the Pampanga.
Dr. Maria Imelda Labrador-Ignacio, provincial health officer 1, said in her recent report that Candaba MHO got the lowest – 36.68 percent – in tuberculosis case detection rate, which is far from the 138.80 percent of the Sasmuan MHO.
Among other MHOs that performed well in the subject were Bacolor (115 percent), Macabebe (94.64 percent), Lubao, (82.71 percent) and Porac (80.46 percent).
Records also show that for 2011, the tuberculosis cure rate (TCR) for Candaba is only 53.13 percent compared to 95 percent in 2010.
Dr. Leonita Gorgolon, Center for Health Development-Central Luzon director who attended the recent health summit in the province, said the province of Pampanga has only 50 percent for TDR and 51 percent for TCR.
As this developed, the Provincial Government through Governor Lilia Pineda ordered the hiring of additional 200 nurses to be assigned in all districts in the province to address the looming problem on tuberculosis.
To fully cover more than 500 barangays in the province, the governor said local health workers should also be trained in sputum collection to quickly identify Kapampangans with early symptoms of tuberculosis.
