TARLAC — A 22-year-old woman was arrested by police authorities here for violation of the anti-illegal gambling law in Barangay Paraiso in this province.
Police identified the suspect as Kristina Cristobal Santos, married and resident in the said area.
Joint elements of the Provincial Intelligence Branch (PIB), Provincial Public Safety Company (PPSC) and CIDT led by PO3 Arnel Cruz, under the supervision of Supt. Bayani Razalan, OIC, PIB, conducted an operation against illegal gambling (sakla) in the said area, which resulted to the arrest of Santos.
According to a police report, Santos was arrested while in the act of playing illegal games in the area.
Confiscated from her possession were gambling paraphernalia and bet money amounting to P224 in different denominations.
Santos and the confiscated evidence were taken to the Office of the Provincial Intelligence Branch for documentation and proper disposition.
A case for violation of Presidential Decree 1602 was filed against Santos at the Prosecutor’s Office.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Mayor Oscar Rodriguez told hundreds of beneficiaries gathered at the Heroes Hall recently for the launching of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program or PPPP to use the benefits wisely.
“My dream is for you to become excellent, brilliant, educated and successful Fernandinos by the help of PPPP,” Rodriguez said.
“The program should be used properly and not be used in gambling, paying house bills, paying debts and other personal purposes,” he said during the forum.
Fritzie Joyce Cunanan of the Department of Social Welfare and Development discussed the two conditions of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, which include regular check-ups of children aged 0-5 years old and regular (at least 85 percent per school year) attendance of the children in their schools.
The program aims to uplift the Fernandinos’ lives from poorest of the poor to middle class standard of living in the society.
Beneficiaries of the program expressed their gratitude to the city mayor and to DSWD for giving them opportunities embodied in the PPPP.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Motorists can avail of a free Wi-Fi connection while traveling along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) this Holy Week.
This is in line with the “SafeTrip Mo, Sagot Ko” project, a motorist assistance program of the Manila North Tollways Corporation (MNTC) and the Tollways Management Corporation (TMC).
The free internet service, powered by Smart Communications, is available in eight selected service gas stations along the NLEx.
Aside from the service stations along the NLEx, the MNTC and TMC will provide base camps along the Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx) to assist motorists going to the provinces during the Holy Week.
“SafeTrip Mo, Sagot Ko” will be implemented at 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on April 4 to 9 along the NLEx, SCTEx, and the San Fernando Expressway (SFEx).
The public assistance also features a number of free value-added services by all 10 gasoline stations along the NLEx and the SFEx.

ANGELES CITY — Police have arrested two motorcycle-riding men after they evaded a checkpoint setup in Barangay Malabañas here.
City police chief Rodolfo Recomono identified the arrested persons as Bryan Buerano, 27, a resident of Phase 4, Holy Angel Village, City of San Fernando; and Jayren David, 30, of Purok 2, Barangay Sta. Cruz, Porac town.
Recomono said the suspects, who were on board a Honda TMX motorcycle without license plate, were arrested after they refuse to stop at a police checkpoint.
Authorities tried to flag down the two but they refused to do so. One of the riders fired a shot at the pursuing policemen during a brief chase, the police official said.
The two suspects were arrested by authorities following a hot pursuit.
Police recovered from their possession a .38 caliber gun with ammunition, suspected marijuana and two sheets of rolling paper. Recomono said the gun was owned by David. (Ric Sapnu)

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III said Friday that the ongoing impeachment of Chief Justice Renato Corona serves to strengthen the democratic system and then justice could be served even if it concerns the highest magistrate of the country.
Pimentel made this statement during the press conference for Pampanga media at the Cefe Rustico here, after the oath taking of the new provincial members of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).
“The impeachment only shows that we can exercise to the fullest our democratic system. In a way, we are strengthening our democratic institutions by ensuring that the impeachment goes well. Whether the Chief Justice is acquitted or not, the whole exercise is not a waste of time since it is a proof that we can exercise our democratic process to the fullest,” Pimentel said.
Pimentel said, however, that he is a bit worried about the pace of the proceedings, adding that like most of the people watching the impeachment, he has found it to be proceeding slowly.
Asked how important the appearance of Corona is in the impeachment trial, Pimentel said it would not matter if the Chief Justice would take the witness stand.
“As a senator-judge, I cannot comment on that, but as a lawyer, I would advice lawyers in the trial that the strength of a case does not depend on how often a lawyer would make objections but on the strength and quality of witnesses presented along with evidences,” he said.
Pimentel said he hopes for the resolution of the impeachment trial when Congress resumes after a one month break.
Earlier, aware of criticisms that the trial has been dragging on for months, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile assured that he and his fellow judges can render a decision on or before the close of the second regular session of the 15th Congress on June 7.
Both the Senate and House of Representatives will not hold sessions from March 24 to May 6. As a result, the impeachment court will only be convened on May 7. Asked if he can resume proceedings earlier than scheduled, Enrile said this matter should be agreed by congressmen and senators.
