CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Motorists can avail of a free Wi-Fi connection while traveling along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) this Holy Week.
This is in line with the “SafeTrip Mo, Sagot Ko” project, a motorist assistance program of the Manila North Tollways Corporation (MNTC) and the Tollways Management Corporation (TMC).
The free internet service, powered by Smart Communications, is available in eight selected service gas stations along the NLEx.
Aside from the service stations along the NLEx, the MNTC and TMC will provide base camps along the Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx) to assist motorists going to the provinces during the Holy Week.
“SafeTrip Mo, Sagot Ko” will be implemented at 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on April 4 to 9 along the NLEx, SCTEx, and the San Fernando Expressway (SFEx).
The public assistance also features a number of free value-added services by all 10 gasoline stations along the NLEx and the SFEx.
There will be 12 service stations available to the public, nine along NLEx, one in SFEx, and two at the SCTEx.
These facilities will offer free charging for all types of Smart cellphones, free refreshments, and free medical services.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Governor Lilia Pineda urged barangay officials and grassroots health workers to help in the province’s fight against tuberculosis (TB) by monitoring cases in their respective barangays and referring these to provincial health officials.
Pineda said such vigilance is the only way of achieving higher monitoring and cure records for Pampanga to remove it from the list of provinces with high prevalence cases of TB.
She made this call during Friday’s TB Health Summit, which is part of the Department of Health’s “Kalusugan Pangkalahatan” Program in cooperation with the Provincial Government of Pampanga.
The event was attended by hundreds of local and provincial health workers from rural health units (RHUs), local government units (LGUs) and local officials.
Pineda said health outcomes in Central Luzon in general, and Pampanga in particular, are still wanting especially on maternal and child health, and in TB control.
Pineda said local officials should be fielding the government-issued tricycles (barangay patrol) in every barangay to ferry clients to hospitals or other health facilities for specific services like TB, immunization, delivery, etc.
“We will do capability building of District Hospitals to provide TB screenings. We will also be hiring and training additional medtechs and microscopists to do outreach services to undeserved areas, and training sputum smearers to improve access to microscopy services among hard-to-reach areas but this is in collaboration with purok leaders,” Pineda said.
Pineda also said that they will strengthen the referral system between the district hospitals and RHUs so that clients diagnosed in the hospital will be referred to the RHU for the identification/designation of treatment partner and completion of treatment.

CAMP OLIVAS — To better enhance their combat techniques, a total of 70 police commissioned and non-commissioned officers graduated from the 45-day training on Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) course.
Philippine National Police (PNP) Regional Director Edgardo Ladao said “the new graduates now belong to the Swat team, which is the elite tactical unit of the organization.”
“Now that these policemen are trained, they will now be able to perform high-risk operations that fall outside the capabilities of regular officers,” he said.
As a proof of their training, the graduates performed a close quarter combat (CQC) where small units engage an opponent with personal weapons in a very short range.
Ladao also said that “to further improve the skills of our PNP personnel, PRO 3 (Police Region Office Central Luzon) will be conducting a series of trainings in the coming months.”

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Thousands of faithful and believers trooped Thursday to the Metropolitan Cathedral in this city to get a glimpse of the relic of St. Clare.
At past 9 a.m., the relic was accepted by Archbishop Paciano Aniceto and members of the Pampanga Clergy in a High Mass, signaling the revered Saint’s stay in Pampanga for at least two days, highlighted by an overnight vigil, before the pilgrim relic moves to Bataan.
Aniceto told the crowd that Pampanga is very privileged to be visited by the patron saint of television, childless couples and of the poor.
St. Clare’s relic has a portion of her skull (cranium) enclosed in a cross-shaped reliquary.
After the mass, it was exposed to public veneration until mid-afternoon, before it was brought to a monastery in Betis, Guagua, where an overnight vigil will be held.
The relic just came from Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Dumaguete and Iloilo and then will move to other points in Luzon.
The relic’s Philippine visit is part of the year-round 800th year celebration of the founding of the Order of St. Clare (OSC) that ends this October.
St. Clare was declared a patron saint of television on February 17, 1958 by Pope Pius XII. She had miraculous visions of and heard the mass from the confines of her room when she was too ill to attend church worship.
Clare died in Assisi on August 11, 1253 and was canonized after two years. She is also patroness of telephones, telegraphs, embroiderers, and of those with eye ailments, aside from being the icon of refuge for childless couples and the champion of the poor.
