MANILA — Proceeds from the sale of a commercial lot owned by the family of Chief Justice Renato Corona’s wife Cristina ended up in her account, the prosecution told the impeachment court on Thursday.
Private prosecutor Renato Samonte Jr. said the P34.7-million check issued by the Manila City Government as a result of the negotiated sale of the 1,020-square-meter property was deposited in Land Bank of the Philippines-Malacañang branch.
This developed in June 2001 or three months after the deed of absolute sale was executed between the City Government and the Basa-Guidote Enterprises Inc. (BGEI), where Cristina acted as representative of the company courtesy of a notarized letter by now deceased Asuncion Basa Roco and Concepcion Basa.
At the time the supposed deposit was made, Corona was serving as chief of staff to then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in Malacañang.
Lito Atienza, who was then Manila mayor, told the impeachment court Thursday that he is unaware where Cristina put the money, saying she should answer for what will happen with the check entrusted to her being the agent of BGEI.
“She’s the one authorized (by BGEI). I don’t know what happened to the check after the transaction,” he told Senator Franklin Drilon, whom he had a falling out in 2005 over his decision to support Arroyo, then accused of massive poll cheating in 2004.
He said the P34.703-million check “in trust for the Basa-Guidote Enterprises Inc.” was issued to Cristina in a simple ceremony at his office. After this, the deed of absolute sale between the City of Manila and BGEI was executed on March 26, 2001.
He also confirmed that the Chief Justice accompanied his wife Cristina to talk over the sale of the land.
“We immediately took over the BGEI lot after payment was made. Our priority then was to construct emergency market which took two weeks to finish,” he said, adding the sale was never questioned in court.
Asked about the relevance of this development, lead prosecutor Neil Tupas Jr. said Cristina could have “misappropriated” the funds for BGEI.
Worse, Tupas said if the money will be traced in the personal account of Corona, then this should have been reflected in the statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN) of the magistrate.
But an incensed lead defense counsel Serafin Cuevas retorted “there is no evidence to that effect,” especially that the trial has yet to discuss anew the issues surrounding the bank deposits.
Speaking for the prosecution panel, Deputy Majority Leader Romero Frederico “Miro” Quimbo said Corona’s lawyers still need to establish how the money earned by Cristina from the BGEI-property sale ended up in the Chief Justice’s Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank) accounts.
“They need to be able to show the trail how it was deposited to the account of Corona. They need to establish that it’s the same amount deposited to PSBank,” Quimbo told reporters.
To recall, PSBank president Pascual Garcia III told the impeachment court that the Chief Justice closed three of his accounts last December 12, the same day he was impeached by the House of Representatives.
The money, amounting to around P37 million, belongs to BGEI, defense lawyers claim.
Last March 7, Corona admitted in a television interview of owning a dollar account at the PSBank and that he is willing to divulge the content during the course of the trial.
He also confirmed the withdrawal of some P37 million from three accounts at the PSBank-Katipunan branch on the same day he was impeached at the House.
“We have friends saying that the bank is leaking information of our accounts since November, that’s why we decided to withdraw the money. That money is the corporation’s (Basa-Guidote Enterprises Inc.) earnings from the sale of land. That is not just my defense but the truth. I didn’t declare because it’s not mine,” he said.
But Deputy Speaker Lorenzo “Erin” Tañada III noted: “Why did he have to break up the money from the sale?”
Corona is facing impeachment proceedings at the Senate for betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the Constitution, which include offenses such as the non-disclosure of his SALN.
The trial will only resume on May 7 to give way for the legislative break.

IF HE only had his way, Chief Justice Renato Corona said prosecutors who accused him of owning 45 properties that later turned out to be incorrect should apologize in public.
“Much as we want to get an apology, we cannot force this to the prosecutors. Saying sorry for a harm done is a personal decision,” Corona said.
Senator Jinggoy Estrada earlier asked the need to issue a public correction for the defective list, which was testified in court by Land Registration Authority (LRA) Administrator Eulalio Diaz on Wednesday.
He advised lead prosecutor Niel Tupas Jr. to rectify the error and take back what they said in the media that indeed, the properties of Corona are not 45. The prosecution said Corona owns 21 assets instead.
“If they made the correction in a press conference, the correction should also be made in a press conference,” Senator Loren Legarda said, adding reputations should not be diminished due to incompetence, flaws, or computer error.
Diaz admitted that the list was a product of a general search in the agency’s database, where it is possible that not all properties are actually registered in Corona’s name.
Of the 45 properties, defense lawyer Noel Lazaro said 17 were already cancelled, including the seven parcels of land in Marikina City sold to Corona’s second cousin Demetrio Vicente, the McKinley property, and a lot in La Vista, among others.
Lazaro also said that another 12 titles were not even registered to Corona and his wife Cristina.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Thousands of faithful and believers trooped Thursday to the Metropolitan Cathedral in this city to get a glimpse of the relic of St. Clare.
At past 9 a.m., the relic was accepted by Archbishop Paciano Aniceto and members of the Pampanga Clergy in a High Mass, signaling the revered Saint’s stay in Pampanga for at least two days, highlighted by an overnight vigil, before the pilgrim relic moves to Bataan.

Aniceto told the crowd that Pampanga is very privileged to be visited by the patron saint of television, childless couples and of the poor.
St. Clare’s relic has a portion of her skull (cranium) enclosed in a cross-shaped reliquary.
After the mass, it was exposed to public veneration until mid-afternoon, before it was brought to a monastery in Betis, Guagua, where an overnight vigil will be held.
The relic just came from Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Dumaguete and Iloilo and then will move to other points in Luzon.
The relic’s Philippine visit is part of the year-round 800th year celebration of the founding of the Order of St. Clare (OSC) that ends this October.
St. Clare was declared a patron saint of television on February 17, 1958 by Pope Pius XII. She had miraculous visions of and heard the mass from the confines of her room when she was too ill to attend church worship.
Clare died in Assisi on August 11, 1253 and was canonized after two years. She is also patroness of telephones, telegraphs, embroiderers, and of those with eye ailments, aside from being the icon of refuge for childless couples and the champion of the poor.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Manila North Tollways Corporation (MNTC), in cooperation with the Tollways Management Corporation (TMC), has launched its motorist assistance program in response to the heavy influx of motorists along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) and Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx) during the Lenten Season.
MNTC president Rodrigo Franco said the program, dubbed “Safe Trip Mo, Sagot Ko”, assures motorists of safe and hassle-free travel with a package of motoring assistance services.
“The ‘Safe Trip Mo, Sagot Ko’ program is an endeavor born out of our desire to exceed our customers’ expectations,” Franco said.
Aside from the nine service stations along the NLEx, the MNTC will establish another two service stops along the SCTEx to provide assistance to motorists during the peak season.
For his part, Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation president Ramon Fernandez said the program is their answer to the needs of motorists during heavy traffic on holidays.
The program will be carried out in collaboration with Smart, Shell, Petron, Shell of Asia, Caltex, Total, GStar, The Lakeshore, Mega Station and Janburlai.
These facilities vowed to provide free Wi-Fi in eight selected stations, free charging of mobile phones, free refreshments, and product samples from coolers in four NLEx stations, and personal assistance from tollway authorities.
First aid in mobile medical clinics, automobile troubleshooting and towing services will also be provided.
To ensure public safety, the TMC will also deploy additional patrol teams for quick response to emergency situations. Ambulant tellers will also be mobilized to accommodate more vehicles passing through toll plazas.
The motorist assistance program period is from Holy Wednesday (April 4) until the Araw ng Kagitingan (April 9) from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.

ANGELES CITY — Pampanga furniture and other products are being lined up for export to South Korea, business groups here said.
A delegation recently toured the province and visited the top manufacturers.
Erdy Feliciano, co-owner of Calfurn Manufacturing Phils. Inc., said developing a market abroad would be boon to the local economy.
“We hope to start business there,” he said, noting that selling abroad would expand its workforce of 3,000 people.
The Korean business delegation also visited Deretso, in Barangay Del Rosario, City of San Fernando along with More Than a Chair Inc., JB Woodcrafts and Betis Crafts Inc., all in Barangay Betis, Guagua town.
Lydia Rivera, chief of business development of Department of Trade and Industry-Pampanga, said province’s artisans exported furniture worth US$19.56 million last year compared to US$16.44 million in 2010.
Pampanga furniture and woodcraft are known for their intricate, classic designs, craftsmanship exemplified by generations of homegrown carvers.
She said the market abroad was promising for local products.
