CLARK FREEPORT — Clark International Airport will give its Manila counterpart a run for its money, said a budget fare airline top official.
“Watch out NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airport),” said Marianne Hontiveros, chief executive of AirAsia Inc., at the launch of flights to Davao and Kalibo from Clark.
Toward the close of 2011, talks of moving flights out of the National Capital Region were fanned by the Aquino administration indicating growth opportunities in Pampanga and neighboring Tarlac to take up increasing air traffic.
CIA President and chief executive Jose Luciano recently signed a P1-billion loan with Land Bank of the Philippines to expand terminals and upgrade navigational facilities in anticipation of more passengers triggered by more international and domestic flights.
Airphil Express will fly daily from Clark to Cebu, Davao and Puerto Princesa in Palawan starting on March 29.
Other airlines using the Clark hub are Cebu Pacific, Air Asia, Jin Air, SeaAir and Aseana Airlines.
“Clark is AirAsia’s 14th hub in Asia,” said Hontiveros, adding that A-320 airbus is designed for 180 passengers.
Echoing the airline’s mantra “Now everyone can fly,” she said AirAsia was offering Filipino travelers its P275 fare all-in one-way for the first time.
Hontiveros said the tag price covered fuel surcharge, processing fee and government-mandated fees such as aviation security fee and value added tax.
“The hype has been building up for the Philippine’s AirAsia particularly the community in Clark,” she said.
AirAsia Berhad regional head Kathleen Tan joined Hontiveros in welcoming guests and members of the media.
She would not discount a travel boom around the corner with more visitors using Clark.
“We cannot stop them from coming to the Philippines,” Tan said.

MANILA — The prosecution panel is likely to start the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona with Article II where the latter is accused of culpable violation of the Constitution for his failure to disclose his statements of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN) since becoming a member of the Supreme Court.
According to Deputy Speaker Erin Tanada, spokesperson of the prosecution panel, “barring any last-minute changes”, Article II will be discussed by the prosecutors first.
Neophyte lawmaker Pangasinan Representative Marilyn Primicias-Agabas was designated as the lead prosecutor for Article II with Cavite Representative Elpidio Barzaga Jr. as secondary prosecutor.
The prosecutors are also expected to detail each of the 45 properties allegedly owned by Corona and his family, which they supposedly amassed through ill-gotten wealth.
Corona said Monday only five of the 45 properties listed in the documents provided by the Land Registration Authority were his and that these have been declared in his SALN. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Judges and staff at the Regional Trial Court (RTC) in Pampanga has joined the nationwide silent protest against the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.
The silent protest was spearheaded by the Supreme Court Employees Association in Manila.
In Pampanga, more than 120 employees at the RTC including judges wore black shirts and purple armbands yesterday, the same day Corona’s impeachment trial opened.
Purple is the signature color of the judiciary.
In a manifesto, Executive Judge Edgar Chua of RTC branch 47 said the silent protest is in support of Corona and the judiciary which they are part of.
“As we face the present challenges head on, may we, fellow workers and members of the judiciary, remain steadfast in our faith, and believe that at the end of the day, our core ideals of truth, integrity and justice, the foundations on which the institution stands, shall still prevail,” Chua said.
The manifesto was also signed by RTC Vice Executive Judge Maria Amifaith Fider-Reyes.
Corona is accused of betrayal of public trust, graft and corruption and culpable violation of the Constitution. He was impeached by the House of Representatives on December 12.
Corona became chief justice during the Arroyo administration.
President Benigno Aquino III supported Corona’s impeachment after the former refused to prosecute former President-turned-Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Mr. Aquino vowed to closely monitor Corona’s impeachment trial to be carried out by senators.
