Subic EnerZone Corporation (SEZ) held its tree-planting activity in Barangay Cawag, Subic, Zambales last July 28. SEZ AVP & General Manager Warell Sario led more than 60 SEZ team members and contractors in planting 3,600 tree saplings on a two-hectare land in Mt, Malingao, Sitio Malingao, Barangay Cawag.
The activity was in coordination with the Subic Cawag Upland Farmers Association (SCUFA) headed by its chairman Marciano Saclauso Sr.

In a speech delivered by Maritime Industry Authority deputy administrator Nicasio Conti on behalf of the chief executive during the recent Subic Bay Maritime Conference and Exhibit here, President Aquino said that the country’s efforts in regaining the national dignity and the confidence of the world send a clear message that the Philippines is ready.
“From weeding out corruption and government in society, to prudently spending our budget, to streamlining our business processes at the national and local levels, we are continuing to regain our national dignity and the confidence of the world in our capabilities,” he said. “The Philippines is open for business and the Filipino people mean business.”
Mr. Aquino also noted the recent upgrades given by international rating agencies to the country and said that these recognition by international observers gave the Philippines new opportunities for development. “From Luzon to Mindanao, the gears of development are turning, providing opportunities and possibilities that we could only imagine in the past,” he said. At the same time, President Aquino also noted the rise of Subic as a major logistics hub.
“Here in Subic, we are seeing the emergence of a world-class logistics and investments hub in Southeast Asia. With the Philippines as the fourth largest shipbuilding nation worldwide, boasting the construction of 117 ships in 2011, we are becoming an excellent alternative location for shipbuilding and ship repair,” Mr. Aquino said. He further noted that the development that the country is enjoying is a product of Filipino ingenuity and action.
Mr. Aquino then pointed out the importance of good governance in national development and how it brings out the best in the Filipino people: “Good and conscientious governance yields positive results, igniting a virtuous cycle of continuous prosperity founded on trust and competence, and at the core of our reform agenda — the empowerment of the common Filipino: to aspire, to work harder, to be more productive, for the greater good of our people. “ “We are witnessing the growth for our nation, reaching its fullest potential,” he added.
With this, Mr. Aquino asked everyone to unite to ensure that the country remain on course towards progress. “By working hand in hand to ensure that democracy, standards and cooperation prevail because every venture won, every investment obtained, every job created in our land is not only the victory of an enterprise but the success of one Filipino movement, of a nation treading the straight and righteous path, towards a more equitable, a more modern, more peaceful Philippines,” he stated.
The first Subic Bay Maritime Conference and Exhibit was successfully held here last week, with more than 500 shippers and shipping line operators attending the two-day event at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center. Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Chairman Roberto Garcia said that representatives from various shipping and logistics companies from as far as South Africa, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan, aside from the Philippines, attended the forum which focused on the advantages of Subic as a logistics and investment hub.
Garcia said the maritime conference should be an eye opener because the Port of Subic has one of the most beautiful and technologically-advanced container terminals in the whole country, and it is now ready for business as an alternative port to Manila.

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT, – Two government collection agencies in this free port have reported a combined surplus of P95.34 million last month after posting a total collection of P760.14 million.
According to their periodical reports, the Bureau of Customs (BoC) here collected a total of P677.18 million in September while the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) came up with P82.96 million. The combined BOC and BIR tallies represented a 14.34 per cent surplus over the total collection target of P664.8 million for September.
The reports also showed that BIR slightly surpassed its September 2012 goal by 1.21 per cent or P988,870, as well as the September 2011 collection of P72 million by 15.22 per cent or P10.96 million. Still, BIR’s September collection is among the agency’s lowest monthly revenue record this year, which is topped by its April collection amounting to P139.43 million.
The BIR recorded its biggest surplus in March when it exceeded its P111.52-million collection goal by 22.38 per cent. The BIR also said it has surpassed its collection goal in six out of the nine months of the first three quarters this year. Meanwhile, BoC-Subic reported a collection increase of 16.19 per cent over its September target. This meant an actual surplus of P94.35 million over this year’s September target.
The BOC-Subic’s P677.18-million collection this year fell short by 1.56 per cent, or P10.73 million, when compared to the P687.91-million take in the same period last year. According to BoC records, its August collection, so far, is the biggest monthly tally since January this year. It also represented the biggest comparative difference of 87.81 per cent, or P319.7 million, when placed against the collection record in the same period last year.In terms of collection targets, the BoC recorded its biggest deficit so far in July when its collection fell 46.75 per cent short of its P604.13 million target. Its biggest surplus, on the other hand, was in August when its collection was 26.05 per cent more than its P542.46-million target. BoC data also showed that the Port of Subic was among the small ports that posted some surplus even when the BOC here fell short of its target in September. In fact, BoC-Port of Subic topped the nationwide collection performance for two months in a row by posting the biggest surplus of P141.33 million in August and P94.35 million in September.
From January to September, the Subic Bay Freeport already contributed to the national treasury a total of P5.78 billion, with P4.81 billion from the BoC and P966.49 million from the BIR.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) conducted last Friday a public consultation with the people of Subic, Olongapo City and Zambales province to hear their concerns about the proposed US$ 1.2 billion, 600-MW coal-fired power plant which will be built by Redondo Peninsula Energy, Inc. (RP Energy) at Redondo Peninsula, Subic Bay Freeport Zone.
The public hearing was held at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center (SBECC) with more than 5,000 people attending, most of whom came from the different barangays, schools, non-government offices (NGO’s) and local government units (LGU’s) in Zambales.
In a comprehensive and easy-to-understand presentation, RP Energy development analyst David Evangelista explained how the Subic coal-fired power plant will adopt the latest environment-friendly technology to ensure there will be negligible emissions.
RP Energy noted that the majority of the people of Zambales support the building of the Subic coal-fired plant to avert power shortages in Luzon in the years to come.
According to Evangelista, “some of them expressed concerns about possible environmental problems once the plant begins to operate, and that is to be expected in a transparent, consultation process. But we assured the community that we are one with them in preserving Subic’s rich environment as we will employ the most modern technologies to ensure negligible emissions”.
Meralco Power Generation Corporation General Manager Aaron Domingo reiterated that “the project will help provide the much-needed competitive and reliable capacity to contribute to the economic development of Luzon while making sure that environmental and health concerns are addressed through proper technologies and state-of-the-art equipment”.
Earlier, Department of Energy (DOE) secretary Rene Almendras told Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) president Robert Garcia that the Subic power plant would play a crucial role in the long-term viability of the Luzon power grid.
Almendras said that electricity consumption will increase on the average by 4.38-percent annually from 2012 to 2018, and if no power generation plant is built on the island in the next five years, there would be substantial and recurring power shortages in Luzon.
