CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–Second District Board Member Fritzie David-Dizon and her brother, Porac Vice Mayor Dexter David, lauded their town mate for retaining his world ranking in the recent World Darts 2012 competition in Hong Kong.
The officials disclosed that Bryan Eribal III of Barangay Balubad, Porac finished 17 over-all in The World-Soft Darts Championship 2012 at the KTEC Kowloon International Trade Exhibition Centre last month participated in by 128 players from different countries.
“Sports help people stay away from trouble. And to have a Porac resident among the top dart players in the world is an honor as well,” said David-Dizon.
“To have Bryan helps promote Pampanga and Porac. It’s a welcome development for us,” said David.
Eribal, an endorser of Toby’s sports products, defeated top players from Japan and other nations en route to entering the Round 32. The 33-year-old top dart player is the number one in the country.
Eribal expressed gratitude to Gov. Lilia Pineda and Board Members Crisostomo Garbo, Raul Macalino and Trina Dizon for giving P40,000 financial assistance to support his expenses in the competition in Hong Kong. David-Dizon initiated the granting of assistance to Eribal.
“I thank the governor and the board members for recognizing our efforts to push sports development and help promote Pampanga. Board Member Fritzie is also commended for her commitment in helping her town mates,” said Eribal.
He was accompanied by Vice Mayor Dexter David when the bank check representing the assistance of Pineda was turned over to him.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) regional office will implement P5.6 billion worth of infrastructure projects this year to stimulate countryside development and bolster the booming tourism industry in Central Luzon.
DPWH assistant regional director Loreta M. Malaluan said there are 174 projects listed for implementation starting this year which consist of the construction, upgrade, reconstruction and improvement of national roads.
Malaluan said the projects are part of the DPWH’s regular infrastructure program this year.
She said the increase in public infrastructure activity, particularly at Clark International Airport, aims to boost the tourism industry in the region.
She said the repair and rehabilitation of the Clark-Angeles-Magalang road and the Friendship Highway in Clark are part of the Department of Tourism (DOT)-DPWH convergence project.
The project aims to improve the roads leading to Clark International Airport which is becoming the most viable and convenient airport of choice for travelers from North-Central Luzon and the northern Metro Manila area, she added.
Malaluan also said that all the DPWH projects implemented in 2012 are expected to finish this year.
She said these include the widening of the Angeles-Mabalacat road, improvement of road projects in Tarlac and Bulacan and the San Fernando-Sto. Tomas-Minalin tail dike, which was destroyed by floods during the height of Habagat in August last year.

SUBIC BAY Freeport: Tucked away in a fairly ordinary looking building inside Subic Bay is Central Luzon’s only indoor hydroponics system—producing the salad vegetables that are fertilizer and pesticide-free.
Two hydroponic systems, with six levels each, provide the nutrients to rows of healthy Frillice Lettuce, Wasabe greens, and Arugula plants.
“The program is a sustainable and renewable farming technology. Our produce are pesticide-free, grown in a controlled environment, and fresh because we harvest based on demand,” Atushi Kadoi, Subic Amino general manger explained.
The project is run by Subic Amino Hightech Corporation which began growing the greens on its nutrient-rich water beds a few months ago.
The system is housed in a 6 meter by 15 meter room where temperature is maintained at 22 degress celsius, cooler than most offices inside the Freeport.
A combination of LED and flourescent bulbs are used, instead of direct sunlight, for the plants’ photosynthesis.
“Salad greens inside the Freeport come from Baguio or Tagaytay, meaning substantial travel time and the potential of mishandling. With hydroponics, we are assured that what we buy for our families or serve to our clients are grown in a safe and controlled environment,” Kadoi explained.
Subic Amino Hightech Corporation used to recycle CD and DVD casing into plastic pellets that may be used for new plastic-based products.
“Importation was a challenge in our plastics business, even if we are inside a Freeport zone. Since our company was in the business of renewables and environmentally-friendly technologies, we decided to put up the indoor hydroponics,” Kadoi said.
They are banking on the growing community of health conscious and the environmentalists at heart in Olongapo City and Subic Bay to give them the push that is needed to take the business into a higher level.
Aside from residents of Kalayaan and Binictican housing areas, Ben’s Kitchen at Harbor Point and Royal Duty Free shop have taken on the challenge of introducing a fully sustainable produce in their menu in their shelves.
“I hope more families will realize the advantage in taste of our produce. For businesses, I am sure that their clients will also value their brand by offering fresh and healthy meals,” he added.
Kadoi, who prefers to be called Ats, has lived in the Philippines for 15 years. He led a Japanese aid program for the Aetas after the Mt. Pinatubo erupted in the early 1990?s.
Frillice lettuce are available for P200 per 200 grams pack while a mixed leaves pack consisting of Frillice lettuce (a combined with two or three other leaves like arugula, wasabi greens, mustard leaf, beet, mustard spinach or black rose) goes for P260 per 200 gram packs.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — A local legislator said equal protection should be given to Kapampangan fishermen in coastal towns, like those in neighboring provinces that are protected by an ordinance involving fishing regulation.
Fourth district Board Member Nestor Tolentino, also the concurrent chairman of the Committee on Environment, said this can only be attained with the approval of the proposed Provincial Environmental Code.
He said fishermen in Pampanga have been apprehended and jailed by Bataan authorities for alleged “illegal fishing” and encroaching in their municipal waters.
“Ito na siguro yung sagot sa problema ng ating mga mangingisda na laging hinuhuli dyan sa Bataan. Mayroon kasi silang ordinansa ukol dito, kaya maganda kung magkakaroon din tayo ng Provincial Environmental Code para naman ma-identify natin yung ating boundaries,” he said.
Tolentino added that with the approval of the said code, there will be clear marks to determine the coastal boundaries of the province of Pampanga and Bataan.
The proposed code contains provisions on coastal, maritime, environment and other resource management wherein the Provincial Government and the concerned municipal government units are duty bound to implement fishery laws within their territories.
Tolentino said there is a need to protect the subsistence of fishermen, especially in local communities, to the preferential use of communal marine and fishing resources both inland and offshore.
Under the code, the Provincial and Municipal Government, including the concerned government agencies, are mandated to complete the delineation, establishment, management, maintenance and protection of the municipal waters.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Spotlight Artists Centre has sought the support of Kapampangan art lovers in the upcoming restaging of the original Filipino musical “Katy!” this January 17 to 27 at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
This as the main cast of the musical visited SM City Pampanga’s Trade Hall to promote the production with a sneak peak performance from theater talents Isay Alvarez who plays the role of Katy; Dulce and Gian Magdangal among others.
Spotlight’s producers, led by Robert Seña, told Sun.Star Pampanga that “Katy!” is the story about a girl who grew up in the world of stage and had braved the many trials of stage life, the war and the decline of patronage for original Filipino productions.
The story is an ’80s stage play on the life of bobadil queen Katy dela Cruz who died last 2004. Dela Cruz is said to have “rose from the ranks to become one of the most illustrious, internationally-acclaimed and highest-paid performers of her time.”
Her career spanned six decades and has captivated both local and foreign audiences.
Seña said the re-staging of the musical will give the younger generation of Filipinos a chance to see another original Filipino play in an age when theater goers are bombarded with foreign plays and musicals.
The play presents a powerhouse cast of theater luminaries and newbies, including Alvarez (Katy), Tirso Cruz III (Tatay Juan), Magdangal (Peping), Aicelle Santos (Young Katy), Tricia Jimenez (Hannah), Epy Quizon (Dolphy), Lou Veloso (director), Celine Beatrice Fabie (Patsy), Christine Joy Mangahis (Mary Walter), Andy Bais, Poppert Bernadas, Sheng Belmonte, Sheenly Gener, Enteng Evangelista, Neomi Gonzales, Astarte Abraham, Jeyvi Castillo, Gimbey dela Cruz, Aaron Ching, Carlon Matobato, China Cojuangco and Dulce as Olivia.
“We are asking the support of Kapampangan theater goers to help support this musical and we hope to drum up more attention to it as we go on the next leg of mall promotions with the help of SM Supermalls,” Seña said.
The cast of “Katy!” will be stage other sneak previews on January 5 at SM South Mall, 5pm; January 6 at SM Fairview, 4pm; and January 12 at SM Megamall, 5pm.
