It is with deep sadness that the Board and Management of the Keppel Group announce the passing away of Mr Nelson Yeo, Managing Director (Marine), Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd (Keppel O&M) and Managing Director, Keppel Shipyard Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel O&M. After suffering a brain haemorrhage over the weekend while on business in London, Mr Yeo passed away peacefully this morning, with his family by his bedside.
He is survived by his wife Siew Hua and two sons. Mr Tong Chong Heong, CEO, Keppel O&M said, “All of us at Keppel O&M are greatlysaddened by the sudden passing of Nelson. This year marks the 30th year since he joined Keppel. From a shiprepair management trainee at Keppel Shipyard, he has worked his way up to his current position as Managing Director.
Truly exemplifying the Keppel “Can Do!” spirit, Nelson has always relished the challenges of complex work assignments and overseas postings. “With his strong leadership skills, commitment and dedication, Nelson has contributed significantly to establishing Keppel Shipyard as a leader today in the conversion and upgrading of a variety of floating production vessels and a trusted name in ship repair. His untimely demise is indeed a great loss for all of us at Keppel.On behalf of the Keppel Group, I would like to convey our deepest condolences to his wife Siew Hua, his two children and his family.”
Mr Yeo, 55, was the Managing Director (Marine) of Keppel O&M and the Managing Director of Keppel Shipyard. He was also Chairman of Keppel Philippines Marine Inc., Keppel Subic Shipyard Inc., Keppel Batangas Shipyard Inc., Keppel Smit Towage Pte Ltd, Maju Maritime Pte Ltd, Keppel Singmarine Pte Ltd and DPS Bristol (Holdings) Limited. He also served as a member of the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council’s Marine Industries Committee, Ministry of Manpower; AIDS Business Alliance, Ministry of Health; and is also a member of the American Bureau of Shipping; SouthEast Asia Advisory/Technical Committee in Lloyd’s Register and the Singapore Technical Committee in Nippon Kaiji Kyokai.
Mr Yeo began his career with Keppel Shipyard in 1982 as a Management Trainee. He Shiprepair Manager in 1983, Business Development Manager of Keppel (UK) Ltd in 1988, General Manager of Wing Yong Engineering & Services in 1989, Yard Manager of Pioneer Yard in 1993 and President/General Manager of Subic Shipyard and Engineering Inc. in the Philippines in 1994. Upon returning from the Philippines, Mr Yeo was appointed as Executive Director of Keppel Shipyard in March 1996, an appointment he has held till July 2009 when he assumedhis current positions. In his career with Keppel, Mr Yeo has received various commendations for his good work beyond the company.
In 1996, he was conferred the title of The Adopted Son of the Municipality of Castillejos and separately, of the Municipality of Subic, Province of Zambales, the Philippines, for his invaluable and relentless support as partner in the socio-economic development of the Municipalities. In 2002, Mr Yeo received a Certificate of Commendation from the Ministry of Manpower, Occupational Safety & Health, for his meritorious service and significant contribution to the promotion of Occupational Safety and Health in Singapore. In 2003, the National Trades Union Congress conferred the Medal of Commendation Award to him on May Day.

IBA, Zambales – To bind Zambaleños towards progress, participatory governance, and greater economic opportunities, Gov. Hermogenes E. Ebdane Jr. and allied public officials and residents launched on Wednesday the Sulong Zambales Party (SZP), the first local political party to be formed in the province.
The grand launching, which was held at the jam-packed Zambales provincial gymnasium in this town, was attended by party stalwarts, chapter members, and supporters from the 13 towns of Zambales. Ebdane, who is also the party chairman, likewise used the event to explain the party platform, present the officials of the party at the provincial level, and announce the party line-up in the coming May 2013 elections.
According to Ebdane, the Sulong Zambales Party will be known for its People Programs, which aim to develop and maximize yield from human resources, Adherence to Rule of Law, which shall be manifested by good governance and able leadership that promotes transparency, social responsibility, and accountability in public service, Peace and Order based on respect for human dignity and the physical and moral security and safety of the citizenry, Economic Opportunities, that will uplift the lives and livelihood of the people through sustainable development, internally generated growth, and access to the ‘s resources; and Participating Governance, which will bring about the widest possible participatory democracy and leadership by implementing decentralization, strengthening local government autonomy, promoting gender equality, and ensuring equal opportunity for all.
Ebdane said the SZP was conceived as early as after the May 2010 elections, but the organization was formally created only in March this year. Then on September 12, after having been found to be compliant with all the requirements set by the Commission on Election (Comelec), the party’s petition for registration and accreditation was granted by the poll body.
Ebdane said he thought of forming a local political party to tap the capability of local leaders who, despite belonging to different and opposing national political parties, proved to be effective in implementing local development initiatives under his administration. “Now, under the Sulong Zambales Party, we can do away with the inherent conflict from being affiliated with various national parties, and we can therefore focus our energies to developing our community and serving our provincemates,” he said. “The best part of having a local party is that local officials do not have to keep jumping from one party to another upon any change in the administration. They can remaining members of their respective national parties, yet will be able to work with us in the provincial level,” Ebadane explained.
The governor also stressed that all members of the new party will be bound by the party principles. Aside from the governor, the other officers of the party are: Zambales Second District Rep. Jun Omar Ebdane, who is party president; former Subic mayor Jeffrey Khonghun, vice-chairman for the !st Legistlative District of Zambales, former Masinloc mayor Jessu Edora, vice-chairman for the Second Legislative District; Vice-Gov Ramon Lacbain II, secretary; and Candelaria Mayor Jean Moraña, treasurer. In the municipal level, the officials of the Sulong Zambales Party are: Mayor Jay Khonghun, chapter chairman for Subic town; former Mayor Wilma Billman, Castillejos chairperson; Mayor Jose Rodriguez, for San Marcelino; Zambales Electric Cooperative (ZAMECO) Dir. Leo Lonzanida, San Antonio; Mayor Peter Lim, San Narciso; Mayor Carolyn Fariñas, San Felipe; Mayor Ronald Apostol, Cabangan; businesswoman Doris Maniquis for Botolan; Jun Rundy Ebdane for the capital town of Iba; Mayor Generoso Amog for Palauig; Mayor Desiree Edora, Masinloc; businessman Napoleon Edquid, Candelaria; and Mayor Luisito marty for Sta. Cruz.
In the same occasion, the chapter chairman also presented the respective candidates for mayor, vice-mayor and councilors for the 13 towns of Zambales. Party officials said that of the party’s 13 candidates for town mayor, only four are not incumbents who will be bidding for re-election this coming May. Three mayoralty bets under the SZP slate are formerly allied with the governor’s opponent in the 2010 election, but have since cooperated with the Ebdane administration. Ebdane himself will be making a second bid for the governorship, while Lacbain, who won the vice-governor’s port as an independent in 2010, will be Ebdane’s running mate. For the First Legislative District, the party will be fielding Khonghun as congressional candidate, while incumbent Rep. Jun Omar Ebdane will be seeking re-election in the Second Legislative District.

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT – Stressing the need to protect the remaining forests in the country, Society of Filipino Foresters, Inc. (SFFI) national council president Renato De Rueda urged fellow foresters to be vigilant in performing their duty as guardians of the environment.
De Rueda issued this challenge during the recent “National Summit Conference on Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade”, which was held at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center here to mark the 64th founding anniversary of the SFFI.
De Rueda said that forests need to be protected from the abusive exploitation of natural resources, because they can yield so much beneficial products if properly taken care of. “Kailangan nating mapangalagaan ito laban sa mga gustong sumira ng ating mga kabundukan, kasama na dito ang illegal na pagto-troso at pagkuha ng iba’t-ibang produkto ng kagubatan, at pagkakaingin,” he said as he addressed convention delegates. “Kailangan po natin ng mga mabubuting pamamaraan para mapangalagaan ang ating kagubatan,” he added.
At the same time, De Rueda noted that forest protection is often a very difficult and dangerous job, and has claimed the lives of several foresters since 2010. “Mayroon na po tayong labing-apat na kamatayan dahil sa pagtatanggol sa ating kagubatan, sa pagseserbisyo sa ating bayan,” he said. Still, it is the foresters who should lead the people in protecting the environment, he insisted. “Kung mayroon pong dapat na manguna sa pangangalaga ng ating mga kagubatan, dapat ay tayong mga Filipino foresters. Kailangan po nating magkaisa para tulungan ang Inang Bayan sa pamamagitan ng epektibong pamamahala sa mga natitira pang mga kabundukan at para tulungang lumago ang ating mga kagubatan,” he said. De Rueda said that towards this end, topics like forest law enforcement that were tackled in the convention would help foresters in performing their duties.
Meanwhile, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) senior deputy administrator Ramon Agregado thanked members of the SFFI for doing their job in protecting the environment, and assured them that the SBMA will do its part as well. “From our end we can assure you that SBMA will continue to do more than its fair share in protecting, preserving and managing this heavily-forested paradise that is Subic Bay,” he said.
The SFFI was founded in 1948 and aims to represent and promote the science, technology, education, practice and business of forestry in the Philippines. It currently has 8,000 members from across the country.
