CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -– Governor Lilia Pineda instructed on Friday chiefs of various district hospitals in the province to treat leptospirosis patients free of charge.
This came as leptospirosis cases in the province are reportedly increasing in communities which up to this time are still submerged in floodwater.

As per record of the Center for Health Development in the region, the province is the second highest with 15 cases of leptospirosis next to Bulacan with 35 cases followed by Bataan, 10; Nueva Ecija, 9; and Tarlac, 6.
Governor Pineda, through the Provincial Health Office, assured that there is enough supply of doxycycline capsules to be given to the flood-affected residents mostly in the Fourth District of the province.
Dr. Marcelo Jaochico of the Provincial Health Office earlier claimed that they had already distributed doxycycline to various municipal health offices to protect the residents from leptospirosis.
In Central Luzon, four individuals already died of leptospirosis while 21 others are being treated in different hospitals for the past two weeks, reports say.
The casualties came from the towns of San Miguel and Meycauayan, Bulacan; Abucay in Bataan; and the City of San Fernando in Pampanga.
The Department of Health has recorded at least 255 cases of leptospirosis in the region from January to August 28, which is 70 percent higher compared to the same period last year.

MATI CITY (Updated) — A landslide occurred in a gold-rush area in the boundaries of Mati City and Tarragona in Davao Oriental Thursday evening, but there’s no definite count of casualties as of Friday.
But sources are giving different counts from just one to up to 50 possible casualties.
Herminia Miones, Don Salvador Mandaya tribal chieftain, said the landslide happened at Sitio Bangol where about 7,000 small-scale miners are operating.
She said according to initial reports from the Mandayas in the area, at least two bunkhouses were destroyed by the landslide.
She said the initial number of trapped miners was 20.
Don Salvador village chief Baudelio Miones, meanwhile, confirmed Friday afternoon that seven bodies were unearthed from the buried mine tunnels. Baudelio is the son of Herminia.
He said retrieval operation is ongoing as they believe that more miners were inside the tunnel when the landslide struck.
The elder Miones said that as of Friday morning, the number of reported casualties rose to 50.
She also said that one of the affected bunkhouses is owned by a certain Mancao. She said several known mining personalities are also known to operate in the gold rush site.
A call to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Friday morning, however, revealed no casualty as OCD is still verifying the report.
The elder Miones said that Thursday’s landslide is the second incident that happened in a span of two months. She said that more than a month ago, four small-scale miners died when a mine tunnel caved in.
The gold rush site in Don Salvador Lopez has been controversial lately after the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) issued a cease and desist order against all small-scale mining operation in the area.
This prompted Mati City Mayor Michelle Rabat to form a task force to look into the area. Later, Davao Oriental Governor Corazon Malanyaon ordered the implementation of the MGB’s cease and desist order.
In a text advisory, however, Major Jacob Thaddeus Obligado, chief of the 10th Civil Military Operations Battalion, belied reports that many were killed in the landslide, although he confirmed such disaster happened.
“Three days of heavy rains in Barangay Tubaon, (Tarragona) Davao Oriental caused landslides in the area that reportedly occurred at 10 p.m. last night (Thursday night) and 5 a.m. this morning (Friday),” he said.
He added that Tarragona Mayor Samuel Uy already sent personnel to check on the damages and casualty.
“Police and military reported three tunnels were affected with minimal damage and no reported casualties,” Obligado said.
But one Ramon Abad Renomeron, a resident of San Salvador in Mati City, was reported to have been hit by a falling tree late afternoon on Friday.
“It is believed that reports of massive casualties are attempt to distort information and create issues that only confuse people,” Obligado said in the text message, adding that information should be culled only from Tarragona Mayor Uy. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Federation of Small Scale Quarry Operators of Pampanga (FSSQOP) offered on Friday help to the Provincial Government on desilting project as part of flood control and mitigation effort.
FSSQOP president Antonio Buyson assured Governor Lilia Pineda of their commitment in helping the Provincial Government to desilt a portion of the river near the breached San Fernando-Minalin-Sto. Tomas tail dike.

Buyson said his group will start the desilting operations at “no expense to the province.
The quarry operators allowed the free use of their back hoe on barge to be used for the desilting of at least six kilometers of the river channel along Minalin and Sto. Tomas towns.
Buyson said they will be able to remove “100 to 150” truck loads of sand materials daily from the operations.
The narrow, one-way road to the area prevents the FSSQOP from increasing their desilting operations despite the commitment of their members, he added.
Meanwhile, Governor Lilia Pineda stated that the province’s capital city of San Fernando, Minalin, Sto. Tomas, Apalit and portions of Macabebe remained threatened by waters coming from Gugu River that supposed to flow to Labuan River and onto Manila Bay.
Pineda said the desilting operations will revive the original channel of the water along the rivers and will prevent flash floods from affecting the south west portion of Pampanga.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Councilor Jimmy Lazatin urged Kapampangans and Fernandinos to help in the blood banking programs for patients needing blood supply through the Philippine National Red Cross.
“The recent calamity that hit Central Luzon has also set in renewed demand for blood supply among indigent patients in medical emergencies. The only way the Red Cross can sustain its blood supply program is through the participation of willing donors in the blood program,” Lazatin said.
Lazatin, a ranking official of the Philippine Red Cross Chapter in Pampanga, said with the onset of typhoon season, the PRC and all its 100 chapters nationwide have further intensified its recruitment and training of Red Cross 143 volunteers – the flagship volunteer program that recruits and trains 143 volunteers in every barangay, school and work place.
The Red Cross, in its website, said it has one team leader and 43 members serving as humanitarian arms of PRC on the ground, especially in times of disasters. The Red Cross’s 143 volunteers also serve as ‘walking blood’ donors in their respective communities.
To date, PRC has a total of 152,362 individual blood donors, including the 2,240 members of Blood Galloners’ Club, more than 20,000 members of Pledge 25 program and 4,954 donors with RH negative blood type.
Lazatin said that to ensure that everyone gets blood covering the processing cost for safe and quality blood, PRC is exerting all efforts to promote and get more supporters of ‘Blood Samaritan’ project.
Blood Samaritan is a project where members sponsor indigent patients in need of blood but cannot afford the processing fee.
