CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Governor Lilia Pineda over the weekend reiterated her call for peaceful polls in 2013 and urged candidates and barangay officials to work together to take Pampanga out from the top 15 hotspots in the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) watchlist.
Speaking before village chiefs at Benigno Aquino Hall, the governor lamented that the province was identified as a potential hotspot despite it being peaceful even during election season.
“Dapat, lahat tayo ay magkakasama at nagmamahalan. Tayong lahat ay magkakampi. Hindo dapat pag-awayan ang isang puwesto at dapat suporthan lahat ng inyong kandidato. Eleksyon lang iyan. Let us show the whole country that Pampanga is a peaceful place and should not be on the watchlist,” Governor Pineda stressed.
She noted that the upcoming election season, which will start January 13 next year, should not be “heated.”
“Huwag nating gawin mainit ang eleksyon. Ipakita natin na hindi tayo dapat bantayan. Hindi ganyan ang mga Kapampangan. What we should do is study carefully each candidate’s platform,” she added.
As for her, the governor said that she rests her bid on Kapampangans and God’s will.
“Ako, ipinapaubaya ko na ang sarili ko sa desisyon ng mga Kapampangan. It will be God’s will for me,” concluded Governor Pineda.

GUAGUA, Pampanga — Local wood carvers here will be hosting the first-ever ‘Dukit Festival’ today to promote more interest into woodcarving and attract tourist attention into the different artistic disciplines of the woodcarving industry here.
The event will be held at Sta. Ursula Betis here with the participation of the best woodcarvers of the district.
The event is mostly a private sector initiative led by the Wood Carvers Guild of Sta. Ursula Betis and Chamber of Furniture Industries of the Philippines-Pampanga Chapter.
Presidential Merit Awardee for Ecclesiastical Art Willy Layug, chairperson for the event, said that the activity aims to attract more of the younger generation into woodcarving.
The Betis District of this town is known for its woodcarving industry that has grown from furniture, religious and installation art.
Woodcarving has become a major industry here generating millions each year.
However, Layug laments that lesser younger people are going into the trade, adding that there are also less attention towards the continuing education of woodcarvers as artists rather than mere craftsmen.
“The event hopes to highlight the creative and artistic aspect of the craft and attract more people into this art form. We hope also hope to bring woodcarving here into a whole new level and bring more attention towards education and improvement of skills of woodcarvers and attract tourists and buyers,” Layug said.
Myrna Bituin, one of the organizers of the event, said the activity will include an exhibit of the best works of Betis woodcarvers. The highlight of the event will be an on the spot wood carving contest to be participated by local woodcarvers competing under a specific theme.
“We hope to make this a community event eventually in the coming years. We will start by organizing the ranks of woodcarvers, furniture makers and religious art makers,” Bituin said, adding that woodcarving will be celebrated for its contribution to the community here and providing an avenue for livelihood and creative output of the residents.

This year, 12 Kapampangans bagged the “Most Outstanding Kapampangan Awards [MOKA] for 2012” including Sen. Manuel “Manny” Villar during the 441st Pampanga Day celebration on December 11.
Aside from the annual search for Mutya Ning Kapampangan, the 2012 MOKA was the highlight of the Pampanga Day celebration held at Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center, this city.
The awardees were led by Villar who was named Moka awardee in Business and Entrepreneurship. He is known for his guiding principle “Sipag at Tiyaga.”
Villar is a true-blooded Kapampangan. His maternal grandfather, Nicolas David Bamba, came from Purok Bamba, Barangay San Nicolas I in Sasmuan town. His mother Curita Bamba is a seafood dealer who hails from Sasmuan, Pampanga while his father Manuel Villar Sr. came from the province of Iloilo.
Villar Jr. has excelled both in business and politics. Hard work, persistence, and perseverance became his work ethics.
Through the years, Villar has proven his guts in housing business which earned him the title given by the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism as “Dean of the Philippine Real Estate Industry.”
For Culture category, Lilia Lising Borrromeo fondly called “Atching Lillian” by locals, a culinary expert and food historian from the town of Mexico was named Moka Awardee.
Atching Lillian, well-known for her traditional way of cooking Kapampangan dishes (Capangan Capampangan) with the use of antique cooking implements and secret recipes—family heirlooms inherited from her ancestors and passed down to every female family member for generations now. Because of this, she is now referred to as the “Guardian of Kapampangan Kitchen.”
In the field of education, Dr. Leonardo C. Canlas who won the Moka award is well-loved family man, a prominent and highly respected educator and leader because of his shared brilliance and humility to serve the Department of Education.

Manalili was a former director and chief of the Public Affairs Division of the Bureau of Broadcast Services-Philippine Broadcasting Service. He was also the former station manager of Radyo ng Bayan 738 kHz, the flagship station of government radio. He hosted a one-hour daily television news program over NBN 4 and was also one of the Freedom Broadcasters of the newly-liberated Radyo ng Bayan in 1986.

Felix Galang Tienzo won the Moka award in the category of Social Service.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Pope Benedict XVI of Vatican bestowed on Friday its Apostolic Blessing upon Archbishop Paciano “Apu Ceto” Aniceto during the pro-life Kapampangan prelate’s 50th Sacerdotal Ordination Anniversary.
Pope said: “As you, our Venerable Brother, recall this joyous jubilee event in your priestly life, may you rejoice in the Lord with spiritual gladness, making your own the words of the Canticle of the Blessed Virgin, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit exults in God my Savior.” (Luke 1, 46-47)
The anniversary was celebrated with a Holy Mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral in this city, where archbishops, bishops, priests led by Cardinal Chito Tagle and thousands of lay in Apu Ceto’s flock joined in the golden jubilation, and shared the event.
“With the supplication of the Blessed Virgin Mary,—so greatly venerated in your beloved nation, the Philippines,—may Jesus Christ the supreme and eternal Shepherd keep you,—His highly deserving Pastor,—in His grace; may He foster your life and ministry; may he protect unto the longitude of days still ahead of you,” the Apostolic Blessing of the Pope stated.
It furthered: “We now impart to you, Venerable Brother, as a sign of gifts bestowed on you from Heaven, and as brotherly (consociatrix) pledge of our special attention, —from the See of St. Peter the Apostle, —we impart this Apostolic Blessing. And through you, we bless the Auxiliary Bishop, and we include in this blessing your ecclesial community, so truly dear to us. ANGELES CITY – The City Government of Angeles received a positive 55 percent sincerity rating in the 2012 Survey of Enterprises on Corruption conducted by the prestigious Social Weather Stations for the Transparency Accountable Governance (TAG) project.
Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan expressed elation on the result of the survey, saying that, “This is a proof that our efforts to curb graft and corruption, and implement transparency and good governance are recognized by our constituents including local businessmen and entrepreneurs.”
“This will give us more energy to continue efforts to make Angeles City one of the cleanest local government as well as one of the cleanest, greenest and most environment-friendly cities in the country,” Pamintuan added.
The survey was supported by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) through The Asia Foundation (TAF), and done in partnership with the Makati Business Club’s Integrity Initiative program and the National Competitive Council.
Around 100 businessmen and entrepreneurs in Metro Angeles were interviewed for the survey.
The same survey showed that the efforts of the present administration under President Benigno Aquino III against corruption were effective with 10 percent saying it was “very effective,” 67 percent choosing “somewhat effective” and only 12 percent stating that government was “not effective.”
“This is a clear reaffirmation of the awards we won this year and last year. This is another milestone in the overall efforts of my administration to bring back the trust and confidence of our people to the city government,” Pamintuan said.
Under Pamintuan, the City Government of Angeles received the Seal of Good Housekeeping (SGH) award from the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) for two consecutive years and the prestigious and coveted Gawad Pamana ng Lahi award.
It is also the top City Government in Central Luzon and number six nationwide in the implementation of the Local Governance Performance Management System (LGPMS).

Aside from the DILG awards, Pamintuan was recently named as one of the seven most outstanding mayors of the Philippines by Superbrands International, a prominent organization of products branding with presence in around 88 countries worldwide.
