The Story of Mothering Sunday in the UK

Mothering Sunday is celebrated in the United Kingdom on the fourth Sunday of the Lenten Season. Although it is often called Mothers’ Day, it is not the same holiday-nor does it share the same origins-as the American Mother’s Day.

In England, Mothering Sunday has a church-based origin. Most English churchgoers attend the nearest parish to their home, which is colloquially referred to as their “daughter church”. Historically, it was considered important for people to return to their “mother church”-either the church they grew up in or the main Cathedral in their area-at least once during the year. It became customary, therefore, that people would make this return visit on the forth Sunday of Lent.
As a result, mother-church day reunited families that had been separated when children that had left home towork as house servants were able to return for a visit. Centuries ago, it was commonplace for children, especially girls, as young as ten years old to leave home for work.

Thus the half-way point in Lent became not only a time for church-going but also for children to reconnect with their parents. Eventually, the two events became culturally linked and Mothering Sunday took on a less church-based expression.

Historically, children would give their mothers small gifts on Mothering Sunday-usually wild flowers they picked on the way to church. Today, much like in the American version of Mother’s Day, children give presents, flowers by post, and cards to their mums.

Gold Star Mother’s Day

In the aftermath of World War I, Washington D.C. resident Grace Darling Seibold formed an organization called Gold Star Mothers, to support the moms who had lost sons and daughters to the war. Grace’s son, First Lieutenant George Vaughn Seibold, was an aviator who had been killed in combat over France in 1918.

In 1928, the small D.C.-based group decided to nationalize its efforts. The Gold Star Mothers grew from a support group of 60 women to an extensive nation-wide networkwith tens of thousands of members and hundreds of local chapters. Today, any American woman who has lost a child in the line of duty can join the Gold Star Mothers.

The organization’s primary role then and now is to provide emotional support to bereaved mothers. Members also actively volunteer with the veteran community and act as patriotic supporters of the United States military.

In 1936, a Joint Congressional resolution established the last Sunday in September as Gold Star Mother’s Day, a holiday that has been observed ever since by Presidential proclamation.

Early in President George W. Bush’s tenure as president, he renewed that proclamation, declaring on September 28, 2001:
“Today, the nation’s Gold Star Mothers still stand as symbols of purpose, perseverance, and grace in the face of personal tragedy. Each year, the Nation remembers their sacrifice by honoring the Gold Star Mothers for their steadfast commitment to the legacy of their fallen children and their devotion to the United States of America.”
The name the Gold Star Mothers was derived from the custom of military families to hang a service flag in their front window. The flag featured a star for each member of the family serving in the military; living members were denoted in blue, while gold stars honored family members killed in the line of duty.

Flowers are always a nice gift for any woman and are especially nice on Mother’s Day. Flowers brighten a room and fill it with their fragrance. A favorite flower can also bring back special memories. Do you know what your mother’s favorite flower is? Do you know what color she prefers? Do you know why she likes a certain flower best? If it is the thought that counts, make sure you put some thought into giving flowers.
Giving Perfume and Lotion for Mother’s Day
Having worked in the fragrance department of a well-known retail chain, I can tell you there are many lotions and perfumes out there to choose from! Mother’s Day was always our busiest time of the year, even busier than Christmas. A nice perfume or body lotion in your mother’s favorite scent is usually very appreciated, especially when the economy is bad and your mother may not be splurging on herself. Before you buy, make sure your mother hasn’t changed her favorite fragrance in the past year. Some women prefer a lighter fragrance in the spring and summer and a heavier scent in the winter. Do you know what your mother’s favorite fragrance is today? Do you know if she changes her perfume preference from summer to winter?
Giving Candy for Mother’s Day
I am not a fan of giving candy for Mother’s day. For one thing, candy is rarely good for a woman’s figure. For another, it can be pretty impersonal unless your mother has a huge passion for a particular sweet. Candy is not very personal, but it is better than nothing.

This may come as a surprise, but giving jewelry for Mother’s Day is just a notch above giving candy for Mother’s Day in my estimation. The exception is if you see a piece of jewelry that really reminds you of your mother. Does she love butterflies, hummingbirds, horses, or penguins? A nice pin or charm of something you know your mother loves would make a lovely gift. Before you buy, find out if she prefers gold or silver, what her birthstone is and what other stones she might also like.
Give the Gift of Pampering for Mother’s Day
Your mother might really appreciate a day or at least a couple of hours at the spa being pampered: manicures, pedicures, a facial, and a massage. However, find out what she likes first. I once won a facial at the store where I worked and I never claimed it. Some of us are just not spa people!

The one thing that most mother’s really want is a little more quality time with their children. If you take the time to ask your mother questions about her favorite flowers and why she likes those flowers best, that will probably mean more to her than the bouquet. Mother’s Day: When Forgiveness is the Best Gift

Mother’s Day arrives every May, right on schedule, mowing me down like a Mack truck each year.
Mother’s Day is the time we celebrate our mothers, and I took it completely for granted for much of my life – while my mother was still alive. Sure, my mother got something from me every year for Mother’s Day, but all she ever asked for was Jergen’s lotion. She loved the fragrance of Jergen’s lotion, of roses and almonds, and to this day the scent of Jergen’s lotion reminds me of my mother.
As the years passed, my Mother’s Day gifts got a little nicer, from the pressed flowers I dried and framed for her, to a porcelain rose like one her own mother had, to a painting of daffodils my mother once admired. However, I never gave her the gift she wanted most when she was older – forgiveness for some rough spots I experienced in my childhood and teenage years.
When my mother developed cancer, I began to spend more time with her. I ultimately moved in and became my mother’s caregiver after her many surgeries and during the last difficult year of her life. During those years I began to dole out her medications in small, measured doses. In a similar fashion, I also began to dole out my forgiveness in small, measured doses which I hoarded like a miser with gold… and which my mother considered just as precious.
My mother courageously battled cancer for ten long years, sometimes in great pain. I’ve been angry with God about that for a long time. However, hindsight has shown me that those ten years changed both my mother and me and gave us the chance to bond we might not have had otherwise. She became the caring, nurturing mother I had always longed for, and I slowly let go of much of my anger towards her. Forgiveness became a little easier.
On Mother’s Day a few years ago, I laid an arrangement of lovely flowers next to her casket for her viewing. We buried her the next day. I think that’s when I finally forgave her completely. I’ve been working on forgiving myself ever since. It’s a work in progress.
Mothers are not perfect, and many children are scarred for life by mental, emotional or even physical abuse at the hands of their mothers. However, I have learned forgiveness is both a choice and a gift. And forgiveness is a dish best served immediately.
Don’t wait until you are laying flowers on your mother’s grave to put your issues to rest. If you are harboring any bitterness towards your mother, try letting it go. Consider giving your mother the gift of forgiveness this Mother’s Day. It will make Mother’s Day that much more precious for both of you.
