Magnificent Women: A Mothers Day Tribute

But I don’t want to grow any more,” I sobbed, “I’ve grown enough and I just want a break from growing for a little while…I’m tired! I’m so tired!”
My Mom sobbed to as she held my trembling, thirteen year old body. We had just learned that although doctors had tried to salvage my vision, over three months and various surgeries, they could do no more. I would be unsighted for the remainder of my life.
“I know Honey,” my Mom said through her tears, “I would give anything to take this on for you. I’m here, I’ll be right here. I promise.”
The beautiful thing is, I knew, with every ounce of my being, that my Mom would truly have taken this on in my place. She was, and would be “there for me.” Her strength, her compassion and her utter belief in me has always emanated through her and I have gratefully sometimes hungrily absorbed every bit of it. I can honestly say, that I am who I am today, because my incredible Mom, and countless other beloved people, infused me with the knowledge that we don’t walk alone. Yes, we have to take on our own challenges, but if we stay open and reciprocate the love of others, they will gift us with the very words, the helping hand or the shoulder to cry on that we need in times when our strength alone isn’t enough.
Even in those terrible moments after I learned about my vision, I “knew” I would be alright. I knew I would be loved. I knew there would be, and I already felt it to my core, deep sorrow. I was also sure there would be a lot of work ahead and that I would have to make a new path for myself. But with my Mom’s arms around me I had an overwhelming sense of power and possibility. Even through the sorrow I knew who I was, I knew who I was surrounded by and I was so grateful that I wouldn’t have to do this alone.
As we move into a month in which we celebrate incredible women in our lives, I am struck by and reminded of the large number of women who have impacted my life. It’s almost staggering when I think of my own mom, grandmothers (I have had the blessing of knowing my great-grandma and both my maternal and paternal grandmas), teachers, mentors, friends, aunts, cousins, role models, colleagues, and clients. I could go on and on but you get the picture. Every one of these women has taught me something new about how to live, love, create, give, or receive in order to bless or be blessed. I live in gratitude to each of them. Thank you magnificent women!
Even if I’ve never had the joy of meeting you, dear reader, I live in gratitude to you! Thank you, magnificent woman, for touching the lives of so many. You can’t begin to imagine the lives you’ve blessed so don’t even try. Just know that by simply living and sharing your world with others, you change people’s lives for the better. You could be the only kind word, gentle smile or warm touch a person experiences today. Thank you for being a gift, for being you!

This powerful Proclamation was made by Julia Ward Howe in the advocacy for the need of official celebration of Mother’s Day in Boston, United States of America in 1870. Miss Howe was the first person in US to recognize the need for Mother’s Day holiday. She was successful in raising awareness amongst the masses and pushing her plead to the upper echelons of power.

Following this very potent Proclamation made in 1870, the Mothers’ Peace Day Observance was held on the second Sunday in June, 1872. Such observances began to take place each year thereafter and paved the way for Mothers’ Day Holiday in US on the second Sunday of May.

Though Ms Howe could not herself get the day recognized as the official holiday, she is revered for her significant contributions towards the celebration of the day and for bestowing honor on mothers.

Julia Ward Howe is also famous as the writer of the Civil War song, ‘The Battle Hymn of the Republic’.

Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means whereby the great human family can live in peace, each bearing after his time the sacred impress not of Caesar, but of God.

In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask that a general congress of women without limit of nationality be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient and at the earliest period consistent with its objects, to promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.

Julia Ward Howe: Mother’s Day and Peace

the writing of her famous poem, “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” As Julia became more famous, she was asked to speak publicly more often. Her husband became less adamant that she remain a private person, and while he never actively supported her further efforts, his resistance eased.
She saw some of the worst effects of the war — not only the death and disease which killed and maimed the soldiers. She worked with the widows and orphans of soldiers on both sides of the war, and realized that the effects of the war go beyond the killing of soldiers in battle. She also saw the economic devastation of the Civil War, the economic crises that followed the war, the restructuring of the economies of both North and South.
In 1870, Julia Ward Howe took on a new issue and a new cause. Distressed by her experience of the realities of war, determined that peace was one of the two most important causes of the world (the other being equality in its many forms) and seeing war arise again in the world in the Franco-Prussian War, she called in 1870 for women to rise up and oppose war in all its forms. She wanted women to come together across national lines, to recognize what we hold in common above what divides us, and commit to finding peaceful resolutions to conflicts. She issued a Declaration, hoping to gather together women in a congress of action.
She failed in her attempt to get formal recognition of a Mother’s Day for Peace. Her idea was influenced by Anna Jarvis, a young Appalachian homemaker who had attempted starting in 1858 to improve sanitation through what she called Mothers’ Work Days. She organized women throughout the Civil War to work for better sanitary conditions for both sides, and in 1868 she began work to reconcile Union and Confederate neighbors.
Anna Jarvis’ daughter, also named Anna Jarvis, would of course have known of her mother’s work, and the work of Julia Ward Howe. Much later, when her mother died, this second Anna Jarvis started her own crusade to found a memorial day for women. The first such Mother’s Day was celebrated in West Virginia in 1907 in the church where the elder Anna Jarvis had taught Sunday School. And from there the custom caught on — spreading eventually to 45 states. Finally the holiday was declared officially by states beginning in 1912, and in 1914 the President, Woodrow Wilson, declared the first national Mother’s Day.
