SUBIC BAY FREEPORT – Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd. – Philippines (HHIC-Phil Inc.) has reached yet another milestone when it held the simultaneous unveiling of two newly-built bulk carriers in its modern 30-hectare shipyard in Redondo Peninsula on Tuesday.

The vessels, named after famous explorers Christopher Columbus and Abel Tasman, were the seventh and eighth ships purchased by leading international mining group Rio Tinto Shipping Limited.

“RTM Columbus” and “RTM Tasman”, which both tip the scales at 106,796 tons, will have London in the United Kingdom as their homeport.

Last January, Hanjin also delivered to England-based Rio Tinto executives the two vessels, M/V “RTM Cabot” and M/V “RTM Drake, each worth about $60 million.

Attending the event in Hanjin’s modern shipyard in Subic for the unveiling of “RTM Columbus” and “RTM Tasman” were Annbel McGagh and Wendy Smith, together with  HHIC-Phil Inc. senior officials, Rio Tinto executives Alastair Fischbacher, Allan Smith and John McGagh, and representatives from classification society Lloyd’s Register.

HHIC-Phil Inc. President Jin Kyu Ahn said that the Korean shipbuilder’s capacity to produce high-tech ships is largely due to its ability to remain resilient amid the growing challenges facing the global shipbuilding market today.

“We continuously harness and maximize our shipbuilding capability and resources to win our clients’ trust and confidence. We believe that these are the vital ingredients in order for us to keep on exporting commercial vessels during these difficult times,” Ahn said.

Cutting-edge technology combined with highly trained and skilled manpower of its shipyard workers, Ahn said that Hanjin is “pushing hard to sustain a cost-efficient production system and meet, if not surpass, the clients’ expectations and demands.”

Ahn noted, however, that the shipbuilding industry has yet to regain its long lost ground owing to small demand this year for new vessels caused by diminished maritime activities around the world.

“HHIC-Phil Inc. is exerting its best efforts to be competitive and cope with this depressing situation, which has already created cut-throat competition among shipbuilders in the international front. Thus, any form of short or long term support to help uplift our industry by the public sector is welcome, if only to perpetuate, or push even further, the Philippines’ current 4th place ranking in the global shipbuilding arena,” Ahn said.

But despite this daunting task of keeping its core business afloat vis-à-vis the present economic reality, the Korean shipbuilder will continue to look after the welfare of the Hanjin shipyard workforce and prevent cutting down of operations, Ahn said.

CLARK FREEPORT–Re-electionist Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan said he will renew his 8-point agenda, his platform of governance, once he wins the midterm polls.

“We plan to renew our 8-point agenda and add more projects if we get re-elected,” Pamintuan said during an interview here on Thursday.

Pamintuan’s 8-point agenda include affordable education, good governance, clean environment, economic development, health care, improved public market conditions, peace and order and development of village facilities.

These agendas were embodied in an agreement called “Contract with the Angelenos” which was signed by Pamintuan, Vice Mayor Ma. Vicenta Vega-Cabigting, councilors and representatives from the different sectors of the city.

The contract is more than 90 percent completed and is expected to be fully completed before Pamintuan’s first term lapses in June.

Aside from renewing this contract, Pamintuan said he will also widen narrow roads, beautify Fields Avenue in Barangay Balibago and develop the city’s heritage district.

Pamintuan has earlier revealed plans of changing the landscape of Fields Avenue from a red light district to an entertainment center for the whole family.

For the heritage district, the rehabilitation and preservation of the Pamintuan Mansion have already started.
During Pamintuan’s first term, he led the construction of the City College of Angeles, the city’s first dialysis center and the improvement of medical services at the Rafael Lazatin Memorial Medical Center, formerly known as Ospital Ning Angeles, among others.

SAN SIMON, Pampanga–Gov. Lilia Pineda vowed to improve Pampanga’s economy by the distribution of the local produce of farmers and fishermen within the province.

Pineda said the yearly bountiful yield of the farmers should be primarily distributed in the province and it will make its cost affordable benefiting the some two million residents of Pampanga.

Pineda cited the Clark Freeport where there are some 600 locators, some of which “feed and entertain thousands of foreign and local tourists daily.” She also mentioned the Clark International Airport (CIA) where there are more than two million passengers expected to use it in 2013.

“With the food we produce in Pampanga, we will not go hungry and can provide the needs of households and businesses,” she added in the dialect.

Pineda said that they will push for the establishment of farmers’ trading posts in strategic locations, including at the capital City of San Fernando, to ensure the steady income of farmers and fishermen.

“Over the years, the farmers and fisher folk complained that ‘middle men’ earned more than them which should not be the case. The farmers should be the first to be protected,” said Pineda.

“We are not removing the opportunities of other stakeholders to earn in farming and fishing. But the producers of the food should earn more from their yield,” she added in the dialect.

Pineda said she will also work for the creation of a cold storage facility due to the huge amount of fish production, including tilapia.

Pampanga is regarded as the “tilapia capital of the Philippines,” producing some 95,000 metric tons of the fish variety in recent data of the government. There are at least 36,000 fish ponds in the province.

Pineda she will aggressively support the province’s 32,697 rice farmers and 5,433 corn farmers and disclosed they will prioritize agriculture for this year.

MASANTOL — Police operatives recently nabbed suspected drug peddler Said Unte during a buy-bust operation against the suspect the other day.

Police reports said that in April 8, a confidential informant personally appeared before the Masantol Municipal Police Station that Unte was actively selling illegal drugs at Barangay Sta. Lucia Anac of this town.

Police conducted a buy-bust operation in coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and barangay officials of Barangay Sta. Lucia Anac, but before the poseur buyer was able to transact with the suspect, police operatives saw the suspect handing over a medium size plastic sachet of suspected shabu to an unidentified male person.

The police immediately rush in and introduced themselves as police officers to arrest both suspect; however, the unidentified buyer was able to elude arrest.

The suspect was brought to the Camp Olivas in the City of San Fernando, while the suspected illegal substances seized where brought to the Philippine National Police (PNP) Crime Laboratory in Camp Olivas for laboratory examination.

MEXICO – The Liberal Party Team Pagbabago mayoral bet Albert Dela Cruz said that the party is gaining support from the third district of Pampanga after members of Christian churches vowed to push the self-branded “People of God” into the municipal hall.

In an interview, Dela Cruz noted that more support coming from other sectors has been received by Team Pagbabago composed of vice mayoralty candidate Dr. Marvin Edrosolam, and councilor bets Maricel Lagman, pastors Roger Bondoc, Ronnie Guevarra, Ali Briones, Dennis Pagcu, Jessie Manalang, Salvador Manalili.

“We have reports indicating our continuous rise in different independent surveys last March by as much as 12 percent. And that was before the campaign period opened. Hopefully the trend will continue,” Dela Cruz said.

He also said that the survey results are being used by Team Pagbabago as guides in identifying their strong and weak areas.

“If the results like that one from a local political party are near accurate, then we could enhance our strategies as we reach out to more Mejicanos in our efforts to bring change and reforms in this town. Our core advocacy is in line with the President’s Tuwid na Daan and we will go for that as more and more of our townsfolk are beginning to see the goodness in Team Pagbabago,” Dela Cruz said
