PORAC, Pampanga–The Liberal Party in Pampanga lost a candidate running for board member in the province.
Leira Buan, who is gunning for a seat for one of the seats as a board member in the Second District of Pampanga in the coming election, resigned as an LP member and will just run as an independent.

Buan said in her statement during a hastily called press conference at her residence: “I would like to categorically state my withdrawal from the Liberal Party.”

It was a personal decision, Buan said. “How I wish I could apologize, on second thoughts however, I felt it was my conviction to press my own realistic agenda that made me assert my choice.”

Buan said she has already tendered her resignation as a member of the party which was properly received but there is no response yet from the national leadership.

I stand by my decision to resign, Buan said.

“I believe with the pro-poor programs I have laid down, the need for a political party takes a back seat,” said Buan.
Buan, the founder of the Lingap Balen Foundation, is a well known philanthropist having done social works in the country including Pampanga and other countries like some Africa nations, China, Thailand, Tibet, India and more.

The philanthropist said that she had nothing against any party. “I am not personally against my adversaries because I look at this exercise as a showcase of what I can offer to my kabalens.”

Buan, however, clarified that she did not resign from the LP to join another party.
But, she is open to cooperation with Gov. Lilia “Nanay” Pineda in the near future.

“Pwede ako makipagtulungan kay Nanay (Pineda) pero in due time. Maybe after the elections, win or loose,” Buan said.
“Saludo ako sa ginagawa nyang tulong sa ating mga kababayan lalong-lalo na sa kalusugan at edukasyon,” she said.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Jacinto-Henares on Tuesday reminded residents in the region to pay the correct taxes, and file their income tax return before April 15.

Henares was guest during the launching of the Regional Tax Campaign in Central Luzon themed “I love Philippines, I pay taxes correctly.”
The campaign highlights every Filipino’s role in nation-building and concentrates in paying the right amount of tax charges.
“We’re asking everyone to pay the right taxes and if possible file your income tax return early before the deadline this April 15,” the commissioner said.

December 2011 data showed 18.9 million Filipinos are registered taxpayers.

“For this year we have targeted a P1.253 trillion collections compared to last year which is P1.063 trillion,” Henares said.

In relation to the Sin Tax Law, Henares said that the incremental increase, which is P33.96 billion, will be seen in the latter part of the year.
Meanwhile, BIR No. 4 Regional Director Atty. Araceli Francisco said that “paying taxes is an obligation of every Filipino. Come April 15, the annual income tax return filing is for self-employed, individuals earning purely compensation income, professionals, estates, trusts, businesses, corporations, partnerships, etc.”

Targeted revenue collection for 2013 is 3.17 percent higher compared to 2012’s P14 billion.

“The P18 billion target has been set for it is notable that the projects of the government and the present administration are more institutionalized.”

BIR Region 4 has 10 district offices: Tarlac, Paniqui, Tarlac, Olongapo, Zambales, Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ), Bataan, North Pampanga, South Pampanga, Baler, Aurora, North Nueva Ecija, and South Nueva Ecija. It has a total of 1,463,688 taxpayers as of December 2012. ●Joelyn G. Baluyut

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga–A drunk man was arrested while challenging neighbors and brandishing a shotgun in Floridablanca, Pampanga last Sunday.

The suspect was identified as Leoncio Bucao, of Barangay Calantas of the said town.
According to police investigation, Bucao was very drunk when he proceeded to Purok 6 of Barangay Calantas at about 9:30 p.m. and began challenging residents while holding his shotgun.

Alarmed and scared, residents reported the incident to the barangay officials.
Immediately, Barangay kagawad Robert Barrientos and some tanods responded and saw the suspect still holding the gun.
Barrientos then sought police assistance to neutralize Bucao.

The arrival of the police caught Bucao by surprise, who was promptly arrested.
Bucao was brought to the Floridablanca Police Station for proper disposition.
Police said Bucao will be charged for illegal possession of firearm.

SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Philippines  — Thousands of local and foreign visitors are expected to flock to Pampanga this Holy Week to witness traditional Lenten practices in the province, the City Tourism Office said yesterday.

Dubbed the “Holy Week Spectacle in the Philippines,” provincial authorities have prepared an itinerary for visitors that will start off with witnessing flagellants in Barangay San Pedro Cutud on Wednesday morning.

Maundy Thursday will be devoted to the Pabasa ng Pasyon or nonstop chanting of texts on the life and passion of Jesus Christ in chapels in San Fernando and Angeles City.

Tourists can witness a procession of flagellants heading to church for their “final journey” and for prayers.

On Good Friday, tourists will witness the Via Crucis or the Way of the Cross, the 51-year-old street drama on the passion of Christ performed by local residents in San Pedro Cutud.

At noon, seven to ten penitents will be crucified in San Pedro Cutud, an event which highlights the Holy Week celebration and is witnessed by thousands.

Another crucifixion takes place around 2 p.m. at Barangay Lourdes Northwest in Angeles City.

On the program for Black Saturday is shopping for Kapampangan delicacies, arts and crafts in San Fernando, San Matias, and Mexico.

And at dawn on Easter Sunday, tourists are invited to join the most elaborate Salubong, a reenactment of the meeting of Christ and His mother Mary after His resurrection. It will start at 4 a.m. at the Sta. Maria Parish Church in Balibago, Angeles City.

There’s also a whole-day festivity on Easter Sunday in Sto. Tomas town, with the Sabuaga festival featuring the showering of petals on the image of the Virgin Mary. Petals and confetti will rain down on the whole route of the procession around the poblacion, as residents from the town’s seven barangays gather for street dancing.

Festivities starting at 2 p.m. include a trade fair, variety shows and a fireworks display in the evening.

Tourism officials said the Via Crucis was first performed in 1955 by volunteer arists of San Pedro Cutud.
