CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – “This is not just about Pampanga but the entire region of Central Luzon.”
Thus, said prominent businessman Levy Laus, owner of the Central Luzon TV 36, which hosted the successful first-ever talent search whose grand winner received P3.5 million in cash and prices.

The Star Mill: Central Luzon’s Search for the Star in a Million at the Robinsons Starmills here “is indeed the most successful among our programs,” said Laus, who was joined by his wife, Tess, and Mayor Edwin Santiago of this city in watching the three-hour finals at the jampacked event area at Robinsons.

“But, importantly, it’s about the little people in our region that were made big by the talent search,” said Laus.
The prominent businessman said the network officials and television audiences were touched by the talents’ stories. Some of whom, he added, could not even raise money for their transportation expenses.
“All of a sudden, they were made stars by this talent search,” Laus said.

Sonia Soto, president and general manager of CLTV 36, said the Star Mill “was a real search because the network went to the people in Central Luzon.” She said they went to all the seven Central Luzon provinces except in Aurora.
“The search for Aurora talents was held in Nueva Ejica. We went to Bulacan twice,” said Soto.

Soto said that at least 400,000 texters joined the voting for the finalists and other contestants in the elimination rounds. The SMS text voting was sponsored by Sun Cellular phone.

“Imagine, just multiply the number of texters by three and you get 1.2 million television viewers,” said Soto in explaining why the Star Mill was called the most successful program of CLTV 36.

For his part, Laus said “many new sponsors are interested to be a part of the second season.” He added that the second series of Star Mill will be held from March to August in 2014.

The Star Mill 2013 search was held for at least four months.
Prior to the announcement of the winners during the finals on August 10, Laus increased the cash prices for the grand finalists except for the champion. The third runner-up’s P5,000 was raised to P50,000; second runner-up’s P15,000 to P70,000; and first runner-up’s P25,000 to P100,000.

ANGELES CITY — Another businesswoman in Angeles City has been victimized by riders-in-tandem who successfully carted away jewelry, gadgets and other valuables amounting to more than P350,000 last Saturday.

Police investigator Juanito Villamil identified the victim as Pamela Ponce, 42, married, of #5 RV Ponce St. Don Pepe Subdivision, Balibago, this city.

Initial investigation revealed that Ponce was walking along Caltex gasoline station in Barangay Sto. Cristo and was about to cross the McArthur Highway going to her vehicle when the suspects on board a motorcycle grabbed the victim’s shoulder bag.

The bag contains a wristwatch valued at P40,000, cash amounting to P40,000, iPhone 5, three sets of earrings worth P250,000, driver’s license, Planters and BDO checkbooks with ready signatures.

The report stated that Ponce tried to chase the suspects who sped off toward Pulung Bulu.

Ponce described the suspects as both wearing dark jackets and black helmets.

The police coordinated with the gasoline station for the recorded footage from the closed circuit television (CCTV) in the area for possible identification of the suspects and the motorcycle used.

Meanwhile, Jerry, the husband of the victim, urged the Angeles City police to exert extra efforts to locate the suspects who are believed to be regularly victimizing innocent individuals.

“Nakikiusap po tayo sa ating kapulisan na sana ay tutukan nila ang kasong ito para mahuli ang mga salarin at hindi na ito maulit sa ibang negosyante at residente dito,” he said.

Fire razes 2 houses in Angeles City

ANGELES CITY — At least two houses were destroyed in a fire along Broadway Street inside the Marisol Subdivision here on Saturday.

No one was hurt but the cost of damage was estimated at P800,000, said Senior Fire Officer 2 Cris Lalic.

The fire broke out shortly before 12 p.m. and it was declared “fire out” around 12:30 p.m.

Lalic said they are still investigating the cause but Evangeline Lacson, owner of both houses, said the fire came from their ceiling.

Some six fire trucks from the Angeles City Fire Department were dispatched to the area.

The Mabalacat City Fire Department and the Dee Hwa Liong Volunteer Fire Brigade also sent their fire trucks to assist in dousing the first-alarm fire.

MACABEBE, Pampanga— Mayor Annette Flores-Balgan is 64, but her boundless energy can easily put to shame some women half her age.

In a recent interview, reporters visiting her office at this town’s municipal hall were surprised to learn that Balgan is past 60 years old.

“She doesn’t look her age. The mayor seems younger,” said a local television reporter.

“I am insecure,” said the mayor’s granddaughter, Justine Michelle Balgan, a dean’s lister at the San Beda College and first runner-up at the recent Ms. Pampanga beauty pageant.

“She always looks younger than her age and she is my idol,” Justine said.

The mayor is unique in many ways.  She does not hesitate to use her personal resources just to drive home a point about the importance of working hard.

Balgan is reviving the bag-making industry in the town. The main beneficiaries are the elderly citizens who work from home to produce those bags.

More than 100 families earn extra from the industry. By working at home, the workers are able to earn more.

The mayor said she has given the elderly population seed money to start their work.

“We let them borrow money and they pay it back,” said the mayor.

“The bag-making industry died in the 1990s after the Americans left their base in Pampanga. But we are reviving it to provide additional livelihood for our women, especially the older ones,” said Balgan.

Balgan said she is focused on providing health and livelihood projects benefiting her people, especially the elderly.

The mayor also taps older people in the making of religious images.  She said they are very reliable and meticulous in fixing the statues’ clothes and hair.

Passion needed

“YOU have to be passionate in everything you do,” she said when asked about the secret of her success in life, business and politics.

Balgan’s firm hold on the trust and confidence of the town’s 71,000 residents was manifested during the 2013 elections when she ran unopposed for her second term. The mayoralty post in the first-class municipality had been hotly contested for decades.

But what’s more gratifying for Mayor Balgan was that her daughter, Councilor Bembong Balgan, topped the councilors’ race in May and registered one of the biggest leads in history against the other winners.

“Mayor Annette Balgan has been tried and tested. That’s the reason she was not opposed for her second term. The mayor is not just workaholic but effective as well,” said Macabebe Tourism Officer Catherine Flores.

Lonell Macalino, a municipal administrative officer 4 who is also board director of the local Pampanga Electric Cooperative, said Balgan’s brand of politics is borne out of honesty.

He said the two-term mayor will not hesitate to help as long as people seeking assistance are being truthful about their problems.

“Once you lie, that’s the end of it all,” said Macalino.

This is what I felt when I got to tete-a-tete with a lady photographer Michelle Pineda who, like all artists I know, remained simple and stayed close to her creative artworks, in her case, her photographs. This also goes to Judy Uson, who have named herself, for what she really is basing from her well-designed cakes, Cake Artist.

I chanced upon MAK Couture who is owned by youthful looking Mak Tumang. His looks spells young, fresh blood in terms of fashion designing. I learned that he happens to be the son of my long time client, Sir Teddy. He started theater production designing and armed with his artistic genes, he furthered into fashion designing. He was a mentee of designer Frederick Peralta (another wedding supplier in this bridal event), a big name in the fashion industry.

Classic printer Milestones have literally built a “store” in the three-day event. Looked like a sturdy shop to me, Milestones, a sister company of AdWorks, had invitations, giveaways, cakes, and cupcakes displayed on their racks. More familiar faces in the bridal fair! Sheryl Meneses welcomed me from Widus Resort and Casino Clark stall at the fair. Sheryl is a long time client from another hotel (before) and through the years, has retained her beauty and figure (good for her!) As I stepped into A La Crème Bakeshop booth, apart from smelling sweet, the cakes looked superb and delicious! Years ago, I had the chance to meet the owner of A la Crème Cakeshop, who is a forever beauty. Cecille Bangsil Mendoza, then was a younger woman who had big passion for bread and cake-making. With inspiration from her folks from Magalang and the artist in her for making creatively-designed cakes, she ventured into the world of sweets and desserts, thus A La Crème was born.

More suppliers gave a weekender excitement especially to soon-to-wed couples and visitors (like me!) WHAT is the magic behind the career of Franklin M. Drilon? He is one of us. He feels what we feel. He senses our needs. He is honest and reliable. He can be trusted. He comes from the midst of the middle class.

Frank is a product of public schools. He finished both his elementary and secondary education in the public schools of Iloilo. He took up his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws at the University of the Philippines in Diliman. He was a Student Councilor and Associate Editor of the Philippine Collegian thereat. As a testament to his brilliance, he was one of the topnotchers of Bar Examinations in 1969.

Immediately, he embarked on an extensive practice of law. He joined the prestigious Sycip, Salazar, Luna, Manalo, and Feliciano Law Office.

In 1974, he started his career at Angara, Abello, Concepcion, Regala and Cruz Law Office. A year after, he became a partner of the said firm. In 1981, he became the co-managing partner. In 1986, he was elected as managing partner.

When public service beckons, he had no ifs and buts. He loves his country that much that he left his lucrative practice to be the Deputy Minister of Labor and Employment.

His career is unparalleled. He rose to become the Secretary of Labor in 1987. He was responsible for the industrial peace that reigned in 1987 up to the 1990’s. In 1990, he was transferred to the Ministry of Justice.

Thereafter, because of the abrupt resignation of Executive Secretary, Oca Orbos — someone as steady as a rock; as brilliant as Solomon had to be appointed by former President Corazon Aquino. Frank became the little President.

He waited for some time before he ran for the Senate. The people embraced him. On April 12,2000, Frank succeeded Blas Ople as the President of the Senate.

Then and now, while Frank is a member of the majority party, he said: “The Independence of this body has seldom been questioned. There is a good reason for it, We must guard this independence zealously”. That year, he guided the enactment of 42 laws which greatly spur the progress of the nation.

From 2000 to 2013, many events took place in between. There was the Estrada impeachment. Frank was on the side of those who wanted to open the envelope. “The truth should come out”, he said with conviction. He was on the side of those who demanded the resignation of Former President Gloria M. Arroyo when she admitted her call to Commission on Elections’ Garci. His loyalty to the nation, is beyond reproach.

Come back, he did to the Senate in 2010. He was there when the Senate grappled with the Sin Tax Bill. He tactfully guided its approval despite all the pressures. This act alone constitutes additional billions of taxes to the government. Frank was the first Senator who believed that Chief Justice Renato Corona should be impeached. Other Senators followed his lead.

In 2013, Frank was not a candidate but he campaigned all over the country for the Liberal Party Senatorial line-up. Nine out of the 12 winners came from his party. It was a foregone conclusion that he would be elected as Senate President.

Frank deserves the vote of confidence given to him by his fellow senators. President Noynoy cannot go wrong. The people of the Philippines rejoice that Frank is at back at the helm of the Senate. The august body is in good hands.
