Grape growers looking for rain in 2012

After three years of drought (2007-09) and two wet years (2010-11) — this year is shaping up to be another very dry year. There were two decent rains that somewhat recharged the soil profile, unfortunately they occurred as the 2011 harvest was wrapping up. Those were followed by one rain in November and a shower in December, which provided much of the fall rainfall total (about 45 percent of average). January did not add much more and a good number of vineyards received winter irrigation.
The total rainfall total for the months of October, November and December ended up at 3 inches for the north county and 1.7 inches for the south county. Not since 1976-77 has it been this dry, especially as December was the third driest on record. Dry conditions look to continue and irrigation is probably a good investment right now. Grapes are a low-demand crop for water and nitrogen, compared to most other fruits and nuts, but extremely dry conditions can affect the strength and uniformity of bud push in addition to negatively affecting the final development phases of this year’s fruit buds.
With that in mind, even if you put on a good solid irrigation of 24 to 36 hours or more last month, it would not hurt to put another 24 hours or so, depending on your emitter spacing, size of the emitters, soil type and variety/rootstock. Although this won’t recharge deep soil profiles, we still have a ways to go before the “rainy” season ends and things can turn around very fast. So it’s easy enough to apply some more water at or after bud break, if the drought continues.
Checking out the irrigation system is neither a bad idea nor a waste of time. Checking out the soil profile with an auger or even just a little digging with a shovel may help confirm how well the winter rains and irrigation may have managed your soil profile. Overall it seems there is decent moisture in the top 2 or 3 feet in most vineyards, but that is about it.
Even though January was close to average in total rainfall, seasonal totals are falling behind again. As of the first week in February the north county is at 6.1 inches (44 percent of historical average to date) and the south county is just at 3.2 total inches (approximately 37 percent). Last year at this time there was a total of 13.5 inches of rain in the Lodi area.
The curious weather pattern this winter (besides extreme dryness) is that most daytime maximum temperatures have been slightly above average, while most night time minimums have been well below average; giving the area a summer-like days with winter-like nights.

Wine expert uncovers world of wine from personal, humorous perspective

In his book, “The Advanced Oenophile” (ISBN), Denman Moody presents wine fans with a new, entertaining and educational book that provides practical information that can only be obtained from a professional who has spent more than three decades reviewing and critiquing wine.
Moody shares his vast knowledge gained from his evolution as a wine journalist and editor to wine consultant who has sampled prized vintages along the way. Moody’s book includes articles he has penned that give readers a unique perspective of the world of wine.
Readers will be informed about the main wine regions throughout the world, and are treated with wine knowledge separators, facts that even the most passionate wine lovers typically do not know. Moody also includes his recommendations for wine purchases that fit every budget.
“The Advanced Oenophile” includes six articles and chapters written by experts in their respective fields. Two articles are written by the number one expert in the world for the topics of Port and Madeira.
Moody has been involved with the world of wine since joining the International Wine and Food Society in 1974. He has tasted many of the best and most valuable wines ever produced. Most of the fabled vintages were from Bordeaux, France, and dated as far back as 1819.
Well-known wine experts have stated Moody’s book is perfect for wine lovers wanting to take it to the next level, and Moody wants his readers to feel the same way.
“While it seems like my book is more appropriate for those who are already into wine, there is plenty of information for novice wine drinkers who want to enjoy a fine bottle of wine,” Moody says. “My book shows them how to do that without having to go to Bordeaux or Napa Valley every time.”
“The Advanced Oenophile” is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.
About the Author:Denman Moody has been involved with wine for more than three decades. He began the quarterly wine newsletter Moody’s Wine Review in 1978. The Washington Post said his review was “the best publication in this country for tracking the state of rare and exotic wines.” He was the contributing editor on rare wines for International Wine Review in New York, and has also been published in numerous national and international publications, including Revue du Vin de France in Paris. For the past decade, Moody has written the monthly wine column for Houston Lifestyles and Homes and its four sister magazines, reaching more than 400,000 high-end homes in Houston. In 1991 Denman was inducted into “Who’s Who in Food and Wine in Texas – recognized as a major contributor to the field of food and wine in Texas” by The Dallas Morning News and the Texas Department of Agriculture. He has also received a lifetime achievement award from the Houston Grand Opera Wine Classic.

Bordeaux approves official Chinese names

Bordeaux’s classified growths have approved the first-ever standardised Chinese translation of their names, Decanter.com can exclusively reveal.
Auction house Christie’s has unveiled an official translation of each of the 61 chateaux in the 1855 classification, after 12 months of collaboration with the Medoc estates.
Simon Tam, head of wine, China, for Christie’s told decanter.com: ‘We have written confirmation and agreements from all but three or four chateaux that these Chinese translations are the agreed names for the whole Chinese speaking world.
‘We are trying to make wine as accessible as possible for our clients. Language is the first barrier and we are trying to break down those barriers,’ he added.
Christie’s staff have worked with chateaux to agree on Chinese translations for their estate while others already had Chinese names. However, some chateaux including Cos d’Estournel have opted not to take a Chinese name.
The Chinese translations have been published on a poster, which will be unveiled to the Bordeaux trade during the 2012 En Primeur week.
The posters will also be distributed to Chinese clients and journalists ‘to ensure the chateaux will be referred to properly,’ said Tam.
It is too early to tell whether the names will be embraced by other auction houses and the wider wine trade but Tam added, ‘I would like to think that the hard work has been done, and it will be adopted widely.’
Christie’s hopes to produce similar translations for producers in Sauternes, Bordeaux’s right bank and Burgundy in the future.

Wine imports surge

Wine drinkers are being spoilt for choice because of a surge in imports, figures reveal.
Australian Bureau of Statistics figures released yesterday show wine imports grew 4.2 per cent to 67 million litres in 2010-2011 as wine exports dropped 5.2 per cent to 746 million litres.
But there was a marked increase in the value of domestic sales of Australian wines, which increased 9.8 per cent to 2.3 billion litres.
There were 1.6 million tonnes of grapes crushed last financial year, a 1.6 per cent increase.
WA winemakers were unfazed by the increase in wine imports, saying they reflected the increase in price and quality of local wine.
Margaret River Wine Industry Association president Nigel Gallop said the region unabashedly catered for the high end of the market.
“The Australian industry now tends to focus more on quality and perhaps people are looking offshore for the cheaper stuff,” he said.
“My suspicion is that cheap wine is being imported for the cask market.”
The fact is that Margaret River is not a source for cheap wines, and in terms of sheer volume we do not produce very much, but what it does produce punches far above its weight.
“The high Australian dollar, meant there has been a marginal increase in some wines from France or Italy, but there has not been an impact on our market.”
WA Wine Industry president Redmond Sweeny said there were signs of optimism within the industry. The inventory of Australian wine – or backlog – was decreasing, meaning the grape glut could be decreasing.
“There is a significant amount of exports to Asia which is driving this and, and that means there is a lot more of a turn around,” he said.
“There’s lots of activity and prices are coming back to a sustainable level.
“It’s not all doom and gloom.
ABS statistics show about 1.12 billion litres of beverage wine was produced, a decrease of .02 per cent on last financial year.

Chinese buy five more Bordeaux houses

Chinese investors have bought five more Bordeaux chateaux in recent weeks, according to reports.

A further 12 are likely to be bought by Chinese buyers in the near future, the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce says.

Chateau du Grand Moueys, a 170-hectare estate in Entre-Deux-Mers, was acquired last week by Hong Kong-based Zhang Jinshan.

Qu Nai Jie, president of the Haichang Group, has already snapped up nearby Chateau de Grand Branet as well as Chateau Branda, Chateau Laurette and Chateau Thebot. He is reportedly interested in more acquisitions.

Some Chinese owners devote their entire output to exports to China, but Grand Moueys will sell up to 20% of its wine in Europe and the US, according to an AFP report.

Asian buyers branch out

Interest in Burgundy and beyond continues to rise in the fine wine auction market.
The latest sale at Sotheby’s London (22 February) suggests Asian collectors’ appetite for Domaine de la Romanee Conti and top Burgundies is insatiable. A single bottle of DRC’s Romanée Conti 1962 sold for £9,400, more than double the high estimate, while esteemed producers including Rousseau attracted high bids.
The northern Rhone also had an encouraging day: six bottles of Guigal’s Côte Rôtie, La Mouline 2000 sold for £1,586 – nearly double the high estimate – suggesting further diversification in the fine wine market.
Stephen Mould, head of Sotheby’s European wine department, said: ‘This demonstrates the broadening interest in different wine regions of Asian collectors.’
The Asian market also appears to be embracing older vintages of Bordeaux, on the basis of this auction. Mature cases of Le Pin, Petrus and Lafite-Rothschild were snapped up by Asian buyers at prices far exceeding Sotheby’s high estimate.
‘We were delighted with the sale results, with strong bidding on mature vintages of Bordeaux and wines from Domaine de la Romanée Conti due to a resurgence of Asian buyers,’ said Mould. ‘Asian buyers accounted for 44% of the sale by lot, including the top 10 lots.’
While almost 60% of the lots sold achieved prices above the high estimate, the clearance rate was down on its January sale, with 77 of the 600 lots unsold.

New Zealand heading for shortage in 2012

New Zealand expects a small 2012 vintage, which is likely to put the brakes on its decade-long growth spurt.
The industry is predicting crops could be as much as 30% lower compared to 2011’s 328,000 tonne harvest.

A lighter crop could lead to a grape shortage, which marks a massive turnaround for an industry that has been burdened by oversupply since 2008.
Stuart Smith, chair of industry body, New Zealand Winegrowers, tolddecanter.com: ‘I expect that the vintage will be around 300,000 tonnes. However, even if we had a 328,000 tonne harvest like last year, we would still be short by about 10%. We now have very low stocks on hand and export sales are growing at a good rate.’
Export sales have grown from just 23 million litres in 2002 to 154m litres in 2011, and are worth NZ$1.1 billion compared to $246m in 2002.
‘If we get a 300,000 tonne vintage, growth will stop because we won’t have any stock; even if we get 300-328,000 tonnes there will be practically no growth.’
In 2011, bulk represented around 20% of total volumes compared to just 2% in 2007, and it is likely that bulk sales will fall with a light crop. The industry also hopes profitability will improve with less availability.
Smith claimed that retail prices may not alter significantly in the short-term. ‘Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc may not change much at all but there will be less of the bottom priced-wine.’

MOËT BRAND MANAGER JAILED FOR THEFT

Brand manager for Moët Hennessy, Romain Brunot, has been jailed and fined for stealing £75,000 of Champagne and spirits.
Over a four year period he appropriated 400 bottles of Krug and 400 bottles of Belvedere vodka that had been left over from events, including those held at the Dorchester Hotel and Heston Blumenthal’s restaurants.
Brunot then transferred the bottles to a cellar in the east end of London and then to a storage unit registered in a friend’s name.
He also put in fake purchase orders to wine merchant Davys that he would then divert to his collection.
He was discovered when Moët asked Davys what was happening to the various orders.
A police swoop recovered around £50,000 worth of Champagne and vodka but £25,000 was missing.
Having fined Brunot the missing £25,000 and jailed him for 15 months, judge Anthony Leonard QC said: “This was a calculated and organised theft committed over a period of about four years.
“The value of the stock taken over that period is some £75,000.
“You undertook this theft while you were the brand manager for Krug at Moët Hennessy.
“Because of the position you held and the responsibility you were given you were able to remove substantial quantities of alcohol by not returning them to your employers after attending tasting events.”

Philippines wedding planners and wedding reception caterers recommend Clark Philippines as this year’s premier destination for beach weddings and garden receptions. Wedding couples in Philippines no longer prefer traditional indoor venues and hotel ballrooms for wedding receptions in Manila, Angeles City, Subic and Clark Freeport.

Selecting a good and safe event venue in Philippines is not that easy. Many public event venues in resort hotels in Philippines can’t deliver assurances of safety and security. This exposes corporate and private events to risks that are not acceptable to event organizers in Philippines.

This exclusive hotel in Angeles Philippines is a place of leisure that is. The resort has the perfect ambience for a romantic beach wedding and a garden style wedding reception, exactly the kind of wedding venue we have been looking for to get married in the Philippines. Angeles City is near Clark Philippines and just 90 minutes from Manila. Clark is home to some of the best golf courses in Pampanga. Although golf continues to be one of the reasons why visitors from Manila travel to Pampanga, residents of Angeles City, Subic and Bulacan travel to Clark not just to play golf in one of the best golf courses in Pampanga but also to relax and unwind in the best resort in Philippines.

Garden style wedding reception can take place within a few meters from the beach of this hotel in Clark Philippines so guests and observe the ceremony at the comfort of their seats on the table.

Clearwater is a highly recommended and most frequently visited private resort in Pampanga. This Clark hotel is a famous private resort outside Manila for corporate planning because of its exclusivity.

Tasting Room : Mother Nature, can you postpone bud break?

Bud break is typically the middle of March, but vintners are hoping it’s later this year.
Vintners say they’re worried frost will kill the buds and that the secondary buds that push out could pare the crop down by half.
For the uninitiated bud break is the beginning of the life cycle of the grapes. Tiny buds on the vine start to swell and eventually shoots begin to grow from the buds.
“It’s been an odd year,” said Adam Lee of Santa Rosa’s Siduri. “It’s been dry, warm during the days, but cooler in the mornings and evenings … the risk is we could get more frost.
Lee said he works with growers who oversee 200 acres of vines from Oregon to Santa Barbara, and they haven’t seen any signs of bud break yet.
Amanda Holstine, co-vintner of Husch Vineyards in Mendocino County, hasn’t seen any signs of bud break either. She works with 22 acres of vines at the winery in Philo and another 100 acres in Ukiah.
“We’re happy we haven’t see any sign of it but we’re prepared,” she said. “We’re checking our irrigation systems.”
Once there’s bud break, vintners will patrol the vines carefully. They’ll run their overhead sprinkler systems to combat frost, and Holstine is combat-ready.
“We’re certainly prepared when the buds decide to perk up and break out.”

Producers must pay appellation fees, France rules

Appellations can force wine producers to pay membership fees, a French court has ruled.
In an important test case that will have an impact across France, the Constitutional Council in Paris has ruled that it is legal for syndicates, or growers’ organisations, to make membership payments mandatory.

The decision has a direct impact on the case brought against the Bordeaux Wine Bureau (CIVB) in December 2010 by a group of winemakers who were withholding their contributions, citing mismanagement and lack of transparency.
Georges Haushalter, director of the CIVB, told decanter.com: ‘This is truly a crucial decision, because syndicates across France would have been unable to continue their work if the court had ruled membership contributions [orcotisations] unconstitutional.
‘The decision says that we don’t need to change anything. We will continue with our mission to promote the best interests of our members and the wines of Bordeaux,’ he added.

Agricultural bodies around France organise their budgets based on membership contributions. In the CIVB’s case, this money – usually several thousands of Euros per year – is paid by all merchants and winemakers in the region. The money funds marketing, research and promotion of Bordeaux wines.
A case brought by the CIVB to reclaim its contributions will be rekindled following the Constitutional Council’s decision.
