Businessman killed in own hotel

ANGELES CITY — A businessman was found dead in his own hotel on Friday, police said. Robert So, 55, bathed in his own blood when police found his body.
So suffered stab wounds and injuries in his face and head while lying on the bed in one of the executive rooms of Haven Hotel in Barangay Pulung Maragul.
In a report, Angeles City Police Director Danilo Bautista said police rushed So to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician. Bautista identified the suspects as Archimedes David, 22, and Ellaine Peralta, 21, who are both residents of Magalang town.
David and Peralta were identified by hotel employees as the last persons to enter the executive room aside from So. The two were brought to the police station in Barangay Pulung Maragul.
Recovered from the crime scene were a six-inch long kitchen knife and an 18-inch long lead pipe while a laptop and a digital camera were recovered from the possession of the suspects.
Bautista said robbery with homicide charges will be filed against the suspects.
So is the third person killed in this city in a span of one week.
Earlier, American national James Basham was shot dead while parking his motorcycle at the Pampanga public market on Sunday. Bruce Anthony Jones, a British national, was also killed in a shooting incident on Tuesday.
Police have already found a lead to the series of killings.

Biz group willing to help stop killings

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (PamCham) on Sunday called on government officials to help policemen solve the killings of businessmen in Pampanga.
PamCham President Renato Romero said the recent murders of businessmen here send a chilling effect to local traders and pose a question on Pampanga’s peace and order situation.
Romero said that the killings, if not stopped and solved immediately, will scare potential investors who want to invest in the province.
“We are deeply worried. We are calling on the Philippine National Police (PNP) to solve the killings and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Romero said, stressing that businessmen are worried over the still unsolved cases.
The business sector here was shocked by the shooting to death of businessman Richard Olalia, 59, last Friday in broad daylight.
Last week, three persons were found dead inside a SUV Ford Expedition parked in a vacant lot near the Korean Christian chapel along Friendship Avenue in Barangay Pampang, Angeles City on Thursday. The victims were identified as Rene Tetangco, 42, of Apalit town; Florencio Yap, 44, of the City of San Fernando; and Dennis Guinto, also of the City of San Fernando. Yap is the son of the owner of Yap Bun King Hardware here.
Romero also called on the mayors to help their local police units in their anti-criminality logistics needs.
He said the local police suffer from lack of police cars, communication facilities, and even support from their local chief executives.
“We at PamCham are ready to assist in such needs, but the government should be the first one to act. There is so much that our local police need in terms of logistics,” Romero said, stressing that mayors play a significant role in the fight against criminality.
Romero said PamCham is happy with the Task Force “Yap, Tetangco” but he also urged the police leadership to take similar steps to solve the killing of Olalia.
Police investigators are still looking at the killings but do not have suspects as of Sunday.
Tetangco’s body was been laid to rest in a family crypt in Apalit town on Sunday while Yap’s body was cremated at Good Shepherd Memorial Chapel here and his ashes brought to Barangay Sto. Domingo in Mexico town. Families of the victims call for justice.

Australian charged with 3 separate criminal cases

ANGELES CITY — An Australian national was recently charged by the city police for robbery, grave slander, and alarms and scandal after he allegedly harassed an American lawyer along the entertainment district of Fields Avenue in Barangay Balibago here.
Police identified the foreigner as Edward John MC Allec, 60, single, Australian, and staying at Diamond Apartelle in the said village.
Chief Inspector Luisito Tan, Police Station 4 chief, said that an American lawyer, Craid Iwao Ihara, 59, aired his charges against Allec before the police station’s complaint center on Tuesday.
Ihara claimed that he was using his mobile phone along Fields Avenue Monday night when Allec, who was apparently drunk, yelled at him saying “you are a fu…g pedophile, fu…g germs, I’ll kick your ass.”
After this, the suspect allegedly grabbed the victim’s cellphone which later fell on the ground.
Customers and employees in different establishments were alarmed by the incident, according to Tan.
Apprehending police officers also reportedly received invectives from Allec. The suspect allegedly told the cops “bring your wife here and I’ll f… her for a short time and I will give you P21,000.”
Tan said police filed the charges against Allec before the office of Angeles City Prosecutor Allan T. Pasamonte under criminal case number III-INQ-106-00356.
The suspect is still detained at the Police Station 4 as of Thursday.

Arrested Suspects for Robbery with Violence and Intimidation against Person

That on or about 040230H February 2012, elements of Police Station 3, this Office arrested the persons of Ace Adriano y Baon, 27 years old, married, jobless; Abella Sunga, 21 years old, single, jobless; Aron Sison y Valencia, 21 years old, single, jobless and Martin Estorres y Yupo, 23 years old, single, jobless, all residents of Sapalibutad Resettlement, Angeles City in connection with the above-cited incident. Investigation shows that on or about 040220H February 2012 while PO2 Rene Manuel with two others were conducting mobilized patrol along EPZA Road, Brgy Pulung Cacutud, Angeles City when changed upon the suspects at the dimly lit portion of said road onboard a Honda TMX 155 with sidecar (kolongkolong) with plate number 1938 RN. When lawmen approached the said group, one of them was seen holding one (1) female shoulder bag and when about to ask the owner of said bag, suspects tried to elude arrest but they cornered and confiscated from them one (1) bladed weapon (balisong) approximately 8 inches long including the handle. That said bag contains one (1) Apple cellphone amounting more or less Php40,000.00, assorted personal belongings, pictures with nametag of Merlyn Saligumba and cash money amounting to Php400.00. Thereafter, contact was made to victim Merlyn Saligumba y Padit, 18 years old, single, dancer and resident of # 850 Tanapayon St., Plaridel I, Brgy Malabanias, Angeles City and appeared to Police Station 3 and positively identified the suspects and manifest her intent to file charges against them.

Students thank Liga prexy, guv for aid

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Some 50 poor but deserving students thanked Thursday Liga ng mga Barangay president and ex-officio Board Member Melchor Pingol for the educational financial assistance extended to them this semester.
“Kami po ay sama-samang nagpapasalamat kay Board Member Mel Pingol at kay Governor [Lilia] Nanay Pineda sa tulong na ibinibigay nila upang kami ay patuloy na makapag-aral. Marami po sa amin ay malapit na mag-graduate (We would like to thank Board Member Mel Pingol and Governor Lilia Pineda for their help. Many of us are graduating),” the students said, as they received the aid from Pingol at Capitol.
Kasama akong nagpapasalamat sa mga estudyante kay Governor Pineda dahil maliit man ang tulong na ito ay malaking bagay naman para sa kanila at mga magulang nila,” Pingol said.
He also urged the student beneficiaries to finish their courses and study extra hard, especially since most of them are enrolled in four and five-year courses.

Town to implement ‘public safety zone’

CANDABA — The Municipal Government here is set to implement a “public safety zone” following the increasing number of motorcycle accidents in a national road along the portion of Barangay Pasig here.
Within the “public safety zone,” the motorists will be required to follow a speed limit of 20 kilometers per hour from the town plaza going to the boundary in Pansol Pasig.
Mayor Jerry Pelayo instructed the local police to closely monitor movement of vehicles to ensure the success of the project’s implementation.
He told Superintendent Henry Flores, town’s chief of police, to apprehend motorists who will be found violating the 20-kilometer-per-hour speed limit.
Earlier, the local police have intensified its campaign against unlicensed motorcycle drivers plying major roads in the town.
Flores previously explained that as per investigation, a number of motorcycle accidents involved drivers who have no authority to drive due to lack of skills.
Aside from this, the police are also impounding motorcycles plying in major roads in the town proven to be undocumented or not duly registered.
Leny Manalo, Pelayo’s chief of staff, in a previous interview, said several drivers are irresponsible and manifest lack of discipline in driving. (Herbert P. Mapiles)

Village chief asks for health center

ARAYAT — Officials from Barangay Guemasan this town are urging the Provincial Government to put up a health center in their area because the health needs of their constituents are being compromised for lack of facility.
“Ang problema po namin dito sa aming barangay ay hindi natin natututukan ang kalusugan ng ating kabarangay dahil wala po tayong sariling health center (We cannot attend to the health needs of the villagers because don’t have our own health center),” village chief Manuel Suva said.
According to Suva, a health center will further bolster the health programs of the Provincial Government.
“Malaking tulong po para sa amin kung mapagpapatayuan po tayo ng isang health center dito (It would definitely be a big help for us if you can help us build a health center here),” Suva said.
The village chief likewise stressed that some of his constituents have been diagnosed to be suffering with tuberculosis.
“Ngayon pa lang po ay mayroon tayong tatlong bagong pasyente na may tuberculosis. Salamat kay Nanay dahil mayroon siyang ibinibigay na libreng gamot para rito. Ang isa pa po naming problema rito ay iyong nutrisyon ng ating mga anak (We currently have three new patients suffering from tuberculosis, but thanks to Governor Lilia Pineda for the free medicines that she have provided us. Women get pregnancy tips, vaccines in ‘Buntis Summit’

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Some 250 pregnant women attended Thursday’s “Buntis Summit” at the Sindalan Health Center here organized by the Quota International of Pampanga, in cooperation with the City Government of San Fernando.
The event was aimed at giving pregnant women tips on keeping a healthy pregnancy.
The seminar was facilitated by health officials from the City Government of San Fernando.
Quota International of Pampanga president Jennifer Lopez said their group encourages pregnant women to give birth in hospitals or in rural health units while discouraging giving birth at home.
She said they are also encouraging pregnant women to undergo regular prenatal check-ups to prevent complications.
“The ‘Buntis Summit’ primarily aims to instill the importance of pre-natal check-up for soon-to-be moms so that maternal deaths will be avoided,” Lopez said.

Expressways to implement ‘express payment’ for Lent

CLARK FREEPORT — In order to lessen the waiting time for motorists plying along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) and the Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx), the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) will implement an express payment scheme for class 1 vehicles during the observance of the Lenten season.
The program, dubbed as “Holy Week Express Lane”, will be jointly organized and managed by the Manila North Tollways Corporation (MNTC) and the Tollways Management Corporation (TMC).
Both MNTC and TMC are subsidiaries of the MPTC.
Under the program, Class 1 vehicles bound to exit Dau, Mabalacat or the Subic-Tipo toll plaza of the SCTEx may pay the corresponding fee upon entering the Balintawak Toll Plaza or at the Mindanao Avenue toll gate.
The Holy Week Express Lane is part of the “Safe Trip Mo, Sagot Ko” project, which is in line with the MPTC’s continuing road infrastructure development program.
The express lane will be implemented from 2 p.m. on Holy Wednesday to 5 p.m. of Maundy Thursday.
The prepaid set-up, according to MPTC officials, also involves the designation of special lanes at the exit points to reduce the volume of vehicles queuing up to pay their tolls.
For this Lenten season, the MPTC is expecting an increase of 15 percent of the traffic volume both at the NLEx and SCTEx.
At the NLEx, the MNTC is expecting 200,000 motorists with 25,000 expected to ply along the SCTEx, specifically on Maundy Thursday.
The special lanes allow for speedy passage of Class 1 vehicles at the exit points.
MNTC officials also added that additional tellers will be deployed at the toll plaza to facilitate transactions and inform the motorists about the express payment scheme.
TMC also added that nine ambulant tellers will be assigned in Balintawak, eight in Mindanao Avenue and 10 in Dau,Mabalacat.
They added that the spare lanes will be opened to further ease traffic flow at the Balintawak, Mindanao Avenue, and Dau toll plazas during the peak hours of the Holy Week.

Group distributes slippers to indigent students

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The women of Quota International of Pampanga (QIP) distributed Wednesday some 1,000 pairs of new slippers to indigent elementary pupils of Maimpis Integrated School here, as part of their social service program for children.
QIP president Jennifer Lopez was joined by members of the all-women organization in distributing the slippers to the students.
She said most of the beneficiaries come from poor families would go to school daily without proper footwear.
“We would like to help these students in every little way we can. We hope that we can ease their burden of going to school without proper footwear,” Lopez said, adding that members of the club contributed their resources for the project which is part of the Quota Cares Month celebration this year.
Quota Cares Month is an annual public awareness campaign held every March.
Bonifacio said aside from the program, they are also continuing their assistance to the Special Education Class of Pampanga High School where the organization has donated a school building and appropriate funding and programs for the students.
Quotarians are known especially for their service to deaf, hard-of-hearing, and speech-impaired individuals and disadvantaged women and children.
Quota members share the values of serving and encouraging others, developing friendships, and promoting international understanding.
Lisa Lim, 13, said the slippers given to their class will greatly help her and fellow students.
“It is very difficult to walk on road pavements during noontime. We are very happy that they have come here and gave us these beautiful slippers,” Lim said in the vernacular. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
