Angeles college posts guidelines for enrollees

ANGELES CITY — The City College of Angeles (CCA) Board of Trustees confirmed the college will be accepting enrollees for the next school year.
Classes for the first semester of school year 2012-2013 will initially be conducted at the third floor of the Angeles City Library while construction of the CCA at the Barangay Pampang is still ongoin

“While the building infrastructure of the college may not be completed in time for the school opening by June, we have refurbished the City Library as temporary venue for the classes on short-term courses that are market-driven, which can provide immediate employment to graduates,” said Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan, who is also the chairman of CCA’s board.
In line with this development, the CCA board has successfully established a set of admission guidelines and requirements for aspiring enrollees and transferees.
Freshmen applicants will be required to submit the following: authenticated F-138 from the school principal, certificate of good moral character from the school where applicants graduated and a certification of barangay clearance.
For transferees, they will need to submit a certificate of good moral character and honorable dismissal, photocopy of the transcript of records duly certified by the Office of the Registrar of the transferee’s school and a certification of barangay clearance.
Both freshmen and transferees will have to comply with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 80 percent.
If a student, however, has a GPA below 80 percent, he can be admitted, but on a probationary status.
Applicants will also take an entrance exam (with an exam fee of P100), which will then be followed by an interview with the admission committee. Qualified applicants would then be allowed to secure a permit to enroll.
According to City Councilor Edu Pamintuan, committee chairman on education, the board is currently preparing their applications for permits to be submitted to the Commission on Higher Education and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.
This will allow them, and the college’s administration, to finally accept applicants by the second week of April at the Angeles City Library.
The councilor also confirmed that several teachers and professors have already expressed their willingness to teach at the CCA.
In order to keep the quality of education high, they will only be accepting instructors and professors with a Master’s Degree.
The younger Pamintuan, however, said an exemption will be given to practitioners in order to provide specialized classes and courses to the students.
This is in compliance with the board resolution regarding the selection and promotion of personnel to ensure the effectiveness of the college’s academic programs.
“We currently have an outpour of support by young Angeleños who have expressed their intention to enroll in our city college,” Councilor Pamintuan said.
“In a feasibility report done last year, 99 percent of the respondents [high-school graduates] favor the construction of this city college, and the administration is accomplishing this dream for them,” the councilor pointed out.
The board also revealed the four initial courses to be offered by the college that include associate degrees in Computer Science, Information Systems and Tourism, which are ladderized programs that can be pursued further in Bachelor’s Degree courses.
A diploma course in Contact Centers will also be offered to prepare students for call centers and business process outsourcing companies.
They also proposed that the costs of tuition will not go over P7,000 with P150–P170 per unit. This is placed in contrast with private college institutions which tuitions go as high as P20,000 to P100,000 for more prestigious schools. (Reynaldo G. Navales)

Aquino leaves for Cambodia on Lenten season

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III will leave for Cambodia during the Lenten break to join other Southeast Asian leaders in a summit, Malacañang said on Friday.
Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, in a news briefing, said Aquino will be in Cambodia to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit on April 3 and 4.
“The President will be leaving for Cambodia on Holy Monday. He will be back on Holy Wednesday,” he said.
When he returns from the foreign trip, Lacierda said the President intends to inspect the public transport terminals, as the government is all set to carry-out contingency plans to ensure the safety of the Filipino people and tourists as the nation commemorates the Holy Week.
Last year, Lacierda said the Chief Executive inspected seaport, airport and bus terminals.
“As with all Filipinos, as with all Filipino Catholics, the President will also be observing the Holy Week, but work goes on. He will continue to be working while we are on Holy Week break,” he said.
Lacierda said Aquino has yet to disclose where he would spend Black Saturday and Easter Sunday.

KUWAIT’S Amir, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber, invited on Friday President Benigno Aquino III to visit his country.

Sheikh Sabah extended the invitation during their bilateral meeting in Malacanang Palace where Aquino also hosted a state dinner to the visiting official and the members of his delegation.
The Kuwait official arrived in Manila for a five-day state visit upon Aquino’s invitation.
In Malacanang, the two leaders also witnessed the signing of several agreements that will further enhance the relations of the two countries.
The agreements include Memorandum of Understanding on Agricultural and Fisheries Cooperation, Agreement on the Waiver of Visa Requirements for Holders of Diplomatic, Special and Official Passports, Executive Program for the Cultural Agreement for the Years 2012-2014, Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Recruitment and Employment of Filipino Household Service Workers, and Memorandum of Understanding in the Field of Labor Cooperation.
The signatories for the Philippine side were Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala, Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz, and National Commission on Culture and the Arts Chairman Felipe de Leon.
For the Kuwait government, the signatories include Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al Hamad Al Sabah, deputy head of the council of ministers, minister of foreign affairs and minister of state for the affairs of the council of ministers.
Aquino expressed hope that the Amir’s visit in the country will be successful.

Traders oppose BIR plan on zonal value hike

ANGELES CITY, Pampanga — A group of businessmen belonging to the Metro Angeles Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (MACCII) on Wednesday expressed opposition to a plan of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) district office here to increase the zonal value of properties to P2,500 per square meter.

MACCII chairman Mario Lazatin, along with other businessmen here, submitted a position paper before the BIR office, which stipulates comments and recommendations regarding the planned increase in zonal valuation by as much as 1,400 percent.

Pampanga village seen as next ‘Rio de Janeiro’

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — If plans push through, the Nabuclod Eco-Tourism Adventure Park in the highlands of Nabuclod village in Floridablanca town could be the next world spot in the likes of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
The plan to erect a similar gigantic replica of the Risen Christ (Ascension) was mentioned during the Nabuclod Project Technical Working Group (TWG)’s meet recently at Capitol.
Fourth district Board Member Nestor Tolentino, TWG head, expressed glee over the proposal of Sinukwan director and erstwhile arts advocate Peter De Vera to establish an “icon” in the now renowned Nabuclod area.
“If they did it in Brazil, why can’t we?” said Tolentino.
Rio de Janeiro is the most visited city in the southern hemisphere and is known for its natural settings, carnival celebrations, samba, Bossa Nova,
balneario beaches such as Barra da Tijuca, Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon. One of the most famous landmarks in addition to the beaches include the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer (‘Cristo Redentor’) atop Corcovado mountain, named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and Sugarloaf mountain (Pão de Açúcar) with its cable car.
“Nabuclod has some of those now like the cable cars and zip lines. Aside from the icon Christ Ascension, there would also be an icon of the ‘Lady of Nabuclod,’ the Virgin Mary herself, in a selected spot there. Although the proposal of Peter De Vera will undergo close scrutiny in a committee hearing, it will be impossible,” said Tolentino.
Nabuclod has been lately drawing crowds composed of various groups, including non-government organizations to help Aetas and push for environmental advocacies like tree planting.
Consultant Roy Imperial proposed and gained approval for the “plant a tree with commitment,” where every visitor would sign a pledge to take care of a tree or more, with fees that will help sustain the development of Nabuclod.
Also approved during the meeting was the regular English tutorials of Aetas who would act as tour guides, as well as the identification of some five hectares for chili plantations based on the Nueva Viscaya template.
