CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–Some 180 couples exchanged “I do’s” during a mass wedding officiated by Mayor Oscar Rodriguez at the Heroes Hall here yesterday.
The ceremony was attended by parents, relatives and friends of the couples.
The mass wedding, dubbed as “Araw ng Pag-ibig, Kasalan King Balen” is a joint project of the City of San Fernando and Home Mutual Development Fund (PagIBIG).
In his message to the couples, Rodriguez said, “dapat basbasan ang relasyon niyo para kikilanin ng sosyedad ang kasal at ang mga anak nyo (Your union should be solemnized for society to recognize your marriage and your children),” Rodriguez said.
You should live in a legitimate relationship, Rodriguez told them.
The mayor also said, “this is the most serious decision you made and this is for a lifetime.”
“It is all our dream to have a family and you should legitimize your children through this marriage,” Rodriguez.
The mayor advised them to not even consider separation “because it will be more of a problem than a solution.”

‘Lazatin hallucinating again on 4Ps charge’

ANGELES CITY – The Partido Abe Kapampangan (AbeKa) yesterday dismissed new allegations by Pampanga First District Rep. Carmelo “Tarzan” Lazatin that beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) of the national government are being threatened by AbeKa leaders that “they will be delisted from the program if they continue supporting Lazatin.”
“Lazatin must be hallucinating again. He may be losing his marbles,” said AbeKa Deputy Secretary General William Aguilar.
“How can a local party, or even local governments, influence the flagship anti-poverty program of the national government?” he said.
He said the beneficiaries of the 4Ps program undergo rigid screening, and they can only be delisted also after strict procedures are observed and not at the say so of local government officials, much less a local political party.
“As far as we are concerned, it has been Lazatin who is exploiting the poor people of Angeles City through blatant vote buying as early as last September when he started paying off people from urban poor communities brought in to his ‘jungle base’ residence in San Fernando City,” Aguilar added.
According to him, Lazatin has been hauling residents of urban poor communities, particularly Epza, Northville and Sapangbato, every weekend who are given red identification cards with the slogan “No to corruption” and then paid off at P200 each.
“Two hundred pesos, that is how cheap Lazatin looks at the poor people of Angeles City. That is how condescending he is towards the poor,” he said.
AbeKa meanwhile called on the advisers of Lazatin to rein their candidate carefully “so that he does not shoot himself in the foot and put himself into embarrassing situations before the media.”
AbeKa referred to a recent television interview by television journalist John Susi in his program “Ngayong Gabi” over PEP TV during which Lazatin revealed he was willing “to give his entire Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) of P70 million” to a candidate to run against Pamintuan.
“The statement is a booboo, a mental slip or a clear indication of how Lazatin treats his PDAF, as if it were his personal funds that he can give to anyone he wants,” Aguilar said.
“It is thus no wonder that Lazatin was charged before the Sandiganbayan in the 1990s for being the beneficiary of his pork barrel funds, and has lately been allocating congressional funds to the Republic Central Colleges (RCC), which is owned by his family, in violation of the law,” he said. ●Charlene Cayabyab

Robbers arrested while hiding in store’s ceiling

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga–Two suspected robbers, one a teenager, were arrested on Monday, a day after they broke into a grocery store in Balanga City, Bataan.
The suspects were identified as Romar Artajo alias “MC”, 22, a resident of barangay San Jose Balanga City and John Patrick Cruz alias “Jeypee”, 16, of 10 Manahan St., Barangay Tinajero, in the same City.
Artajo and Cruz were found to be still hiding at the ceiling of the store and arrested at 8 a.m. of Monday.
Police clarified that the theft occurred on Sunday night.
Police investigation showed that on Monday morning, Salvador Quindoza, owner of Six Brothers and Sheryl Anne General Merchandise, noticed, that when he was about to open his store in the morning, it was in disarray and discovered that some of the store’s merchandise were missing.
The Six Brothers and Sheryl Anne General Merchandise is located along Condo Mart, Barangay Poblacion, Balanga City.
According to police investigation, missing were: assorted units of cellphone and gadgets, assorted gold plated jewelleries, DVD players and tablets.
The stolen items, worth P630,250, were discovered inside the comfort room of the store, police said.
Recovered from the suspects were two pieces of screw drivers and one piece of steel cutter.
The suspects, together with the stolen items, were brought to the Balanga City Police Station for proper disposition. ●Froilan E Magtoto

Ex-Philhealth prexy denies irregularities during stint

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–Mayorable Rey Aquino yesterday denied reports about alleged irregularities at the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (Philhealth) during his stint as the firm’s president and chief executive officer.
In an interview, the former Philhealth president and now mayoralty bet in this city said there’s no truth to the issues being raised against him by his detractors in politics.
Aquino said he’s been out of Philhealth for a year, and still there have been no complaints of irregularities filed against him in court.
“They have no basis about the issues. At this political season kasama na ang paninira diyan pero hindi natin papatulan yan, “ Aquino said during the 18th anniversary celebration of PhilHealth in the region held at the PhilHealth regional office in this city.
He also made an appeal to his detractors to work with their qualifications instead of mudslinging.
“Good luck nalang sa kanila at good luck na rin sa akin,” Aquino stressed.
Former Philhealth Senior Vice President and Floridablanca mayoralty candidate Tito Mendiola, for his part, said Aquino started as “a very innovative president” at the insurance corporation.
Mendiola added that Aquino, during his term at PhilHealth, introduced so many policies that are beneficial to each member.

Environmentalist bares illegal garbage dump in Angeles City

ANGELES CITY–A known environmentalist here has hit village and city officials who allowed the burning and dumping of wastes at an alleged open dumpsite in Barangay Cuayan, this city.
Sonny Dobles, president of the Alliance for the Development of Central Luzon (ADCL), said that sources reported that the garbage being dumped at the alleged open dumpsite comes from several areas here and in nearby City of San Fernando.
“They burn the garbage so that there will be more space at the dumpsite,” Dobles said.
He stressed that this is a clear violation of Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act and the Clean Air Act.
Dobles said he is planning to file charges before the Green Court against individuals, village and city officials responsible for the illegal dumping and burning of the waste here.
Dobles and other environmentalists including officials from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources recently inspected the dumpsite. He also urged city officials to look into the issue. ●Charlene A. Cayabyab

Yokohama Tire to begin Clark Freeport expansion

CLARK FREEPORT–The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., announced yesterday that the company will start the Phase II expansion for Yokohama Tire Philippines Inc. (YTPI), a local subsidiary for manufacturing and selling passenger car tires, in May this year.
With a total investment of 11 billion yen, the Phase II expansion will enable an increase of 2.5 million tires in the annual production capacity of YTPI. It is targeted that operation at Phase II will start in fall of 2014 and the company plans to begin full-fledged production in 2015. The annual production capacity of YTPI is expected to reach 12.5 million tires by the time the Phase II expansion is completed.
In January 2011, Yokohama Rubber announced its plan to expand the annual production capacity of the YTPI from then 7 million to 17 million tires by 2017.
According to the plan, Yokohama Rubber would invest 20 billion yen in the Phase I expansion to increase the capacity by 3 million tires a year by 2013. Also planned was the following Phase II expansion to increase the capacity to 13 million by 2014.
With the Phase I expansion completed as scheduled, its operation will begin this month and will enter full-fledged production in 2014. The Phase II expansion of this time also is based on the initial plan.
However, because of the change in the market environment demanding for larger-sized higher value added tires, the production capacity in terms of the quantity of tires will slightly decrease in the Phase II expansion so as to enhance the production for such tires. To accommodate these Phase I and II expansions, the company also expanded the plant’s site area by 2.8 times to 46 hectares from the original 16 hectares by newly leasing an adjacent land of 30 hectares last February 2011.
In 1996, the YTPI was founded as a production base for passenger car tires for export. At present, it manufactures tires for passenger cars and sports utility vehicles with internal diameters from 13 to 18 inches (and to 20 inches by the end of 2013).
In addition to exporting most of these tires to North America, Europe and ASEAN countries, YTPI is delivering some of the tires to automotive manufacturers in North America and Asian countries. ●

Pineda cites gov’t anti-flood thrusts

APALIT, Pampanga – Gov. Lilia Pineda announced on Wednesday here various projects of the national government to drastically limit the effects of perennial flooding in Pampanga.
Pineda, in her speech during the meeting of villager leaders of the eight towns in the province’s Fourth District, said the Aquino government, through the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), “had been doing much” to solve the yearly problem of flooding.
The 62-year-old governor disclosed that the DPWH will use at least P600 million for the Phase II of the Pampanga Delta Development Project.
Its completion will benefit both Pampanga and nearby Bulacan province, including the flood-prone towns of Hagonoy and Calumpit. Both Bulacan towns are near Apalit.
Pineda cited the on-going dredging in Pampanga, including the DPWH’s P23 million operations at the Pampanga Delta.
She said the DPWH’s project at Pampanga Delta done before the rainy season will reduce the effects of floods in the Fourth District, including that in the towns of Macabebe, Masantol, Minalin, Sto. Tomas and Apalit.
Pineda said the DPWH will use at least P50 million for the dredging operations, including at the Pampanga-Pasac Delta.

Power coop conducts seminar for meter readers

MEXICO, Pampanga–The Pampanga I Electric Cooperative (PELCO I) is conducting a two-day training seminar for its electric meter readers that started yesterday at the PELCO I compound in this town.
The activity, focused on the accuracy of meter readings on the electric consumption of households, commercial and industrial establishments, was aimed at ensuring the cooperative’s member-consumers accurate readings on their use of electricity.
PELCO I General Manager Loliano Allas meanwhile stressed the importance of accuracy on meter reading as most electric cooperatives note that the bulk of consumer complaints is attributed to inaccurate electric consumption readings. He furthered that accurate meter readings significantly abate system loss in electric power utilities that redounds to the satisfaction of electric consumers.
