FLORIDABLANCA – The UPS Philippines employees of Clark Freeport banded together to support a school-based agriculture, mentoring, and feeding program at the Sto. Rosario Elementary School here in celebration of the 10th annual Global Volunteer Month.
Some 203 UPS employees and their families recently dedicated one day to preparing the plots and organic fertilizers, as well as repairing fences, for both the vegetable garden and the tree nursery of the school.
The volunteers also conducted a food clinic, wherein they fed 250 students and mentored pre-school to Grade 3 students.
In addition to setting up the vegetable garden and tree nursery, UPS employees and their families also prepared gift packs with juice, biscuits, and candies for the students.
For UPS Philippines, their ongoing partnership with the AWECA Foundation is an opportunity to promote sustainable development in Filipino communities, especially in addressing key issues in health and education.
“One of the focus areas for The UPS Foundation is encouraging sustainable development,” said Tim Gohoc, managing director of UPS Philippines.
“Through our work with the AWECA Foundation, we hope that more schoolchildren will learn about organic farming and agriculture, and reap the benefits of nutritious meals prepared with the harvests from their gardens,” Gohoc added.
This year’s Global Volunteer Month initiative is in support of The UPS Foundation and AWECA Foundation’s School Caravan: Generating school-based food sources through Upgrading the Learning on Agriculture of the Youth (Gulay) program, a year-long project involving 572 students from Grades 1-6 in three schools in Pampanga.
The program aims to educate students on the fundamentals of organic farming, provide farm tools and materials for the schools’ vegetable gardens and nurseries, construct a food clinic, and set up feeding programs to address malnutrition in school-aged children.
The vegetables harvested in the school nurseries will be used for the students’ meals, while the food clinic will charge three pesos for meals, to help support the project.
For UPS employees, this year’s Global Volunteer Month was opportunity for them to help their fellow Filipinos combat the high drop-out rates in schools through education and proper nutrition.
“Good nutrition plays an important role in ensuring that these children are prepared for school, while their knowledge of organic farming will benefit themselves, their families and communities,” said UPS Clark Community Involvement Committee Head Rolando Nierva.
“This activity was a good reminder of what we can share with the communities we work with, and what we can do to drive change wherever we are,” he added.
In Asia, about 5,700 employees, with their families and friends, volunteered more than 26,000 hours of service. Through The UPS Foundation, over US$1.7 million in grants and charitable giving were also distributed to about 50 non-profit organizations within the Asia Pacific region in 2012. Many of these grant beneficiaries have been organizations with whom UPS employees volunteer.
“UPS has always embraced the philosophy of giving back to the community through volunteerism, and has been making incremental investments in resources to ensure that we are contributing to Asia’s development and growth at the pace it demands,” said Pete Elroy, vice-president of Human Resources, UPS Asia Pacific Region.
“From the 2,400 employees that volunteered 10 years ago in the inaugural volunteer month, we are very pleased to share that nearly 5,700 Asia-Pacific employees, along with their families and friends, have contributed their hours in making their communities more environmentally sustainable this year. CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Students from San Fernando Elementary School and the University of the Assumption High School Department topped in their respective categories in the “Kaganapan 2013” on-the-spot streamer painting contest held Friday.
The young artists from the two City of San Fernando-based schools each took home the top prize of P5,000.
The annual painting contest, held at the city proper along Jose Abad Santos Street, is part of “Kaganapan 2013,” or the celebration of San Fernando’s 12th Cityhood Charter Anniversary.
“The students actually depicted this year’s theme ‘Isang Dosenang Saya, Isang Dosenang Kaunlaran’ in their colorful streamers. This annual on-the-spot painting contest brings out the creativity and artistry of young Fernandinos. After the contest, their works will be displayed all over the city the whole Kaganapan month of February,” said senior tourism officer Ching Pangilinan-Gonzales.
The other participating schools include Sindalan Elementary School, Bulaon Elementary School, San Lorenzo Ruiz Center for Schools and Studies, Malpitic Elementary School, San Jose Panlumacan Elementary School, San Nicolas Elementary School and Northville Elementary School in the primary level, while Pampanga High School and Northville High School vied for the top plum in the secondary level. CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Provincial Cooperative and Entrepreneurial Development Office (PCEDO) is pushing for countryside development by empowering small business owners.
The PCEDO, through Governor Lilia Pineda, distributed loan assistance under the Negosyu king Panyulung Program (NPP) amounting to P1.9 million to some 215 beneficiaries in Pampanga.
The beneficiaries came from districts III, III and IV of the province.
PCEDO head Mamerto Gatus told the beneficiaries that NPP is aimed at providing them opportunity to start their own small business.
Gatus said the local economy depends on small economic activities, wherein majority of the Kapampangans are relying on it.
He noted that 94 percent of the economy depends on them.
“We can say that backyard enterprises is the backbone of the economy, that is why we have to create programs supporting this sector,” he said.
The livelihood program offers loan from P5,000 to P10,000 without interest and collateral only to those who are deserving and needy. It is payable in six to 10 months and renewable.
Luningning Vergara, provincial manager of public employment services office (Peso), said some of the NPP beneficiaries, especially ambulant vendors, were also given Nego-Kart as per governor’s instruction.
“Aside from capital, we assessed our beneficiaries and picked those who needs cart for their business,” she said.
NPP is a socialized lending program, which serves as capital or additional capital to the economic activities being undertaken by the marginalized sector in a given community.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — A Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) official announced Thursday that some 37,387 poor Kapampangan families will receive a total amount of P15,000 annually.
DSWD Regional Director Adelina Apostol, in a meeting with Governor Lilia Pineda and other provincial officials, said the beneficiaries will be getting benefits under the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).
Governor Pineda thanked President Benigno Aquino III for continuously supporting the province through the provision of various health programs.
She also extended gratitude to DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman for the department’s unwavering support in implementing social services program that may help uplift the standard of living of the Kapampangans.
At least 47,569 Kapampangan family beneficiaries were given PhilHealth cards last year under the National Household Targeting System (NHTS) jointly implemented by the DSWD and PhilHealth.
Pineda also noted that the Aquino administration is continuously helping the Kapampangans through the offices of the regional line agencies in the areas of social services, health, education, agriculture, livelihood, and infrastructure, among others.
In support to this, the Provincial Government has implemented the construction and general renovation of the eleven district and provincial hospitals to complement PhilHealth’s “zero billing scheme.”

Gov. Lilia “Nanay Baby” Pineda has all the right to feel irritated with how most of the mayors in Pampanga are treating the province’s problem with garbage. She blew her top when only a handful of mayors showed up in a meeting that is supposed to come up with a huge solution to the existing predicament that is garbage.
The governor, in last week’s meeting with Holcim Philippines in Mabalacat City, was appalled to see how the mayors ignored her invitation in an event that would actually give them mayors a boost in their efforts to solve the overwhelming problem in waste disposal. Only three local chief executives, Mayor Romy Pecson of Magalang, Mayor Jun Tetangco of Apalit and host-mayor Boking Morales of Mabalacat City were at the venue on Friday to listen how the private firm can help them in disposing of the plastic waste generated in their respective municipalities.
It’s alright if those who were absent in that meeting had their own comprehensive answer to the garbage woe that has been saddling all towns and cities, nothing is excluded, in the province. It’s okay for them to be absent in that meeting if they know among themselves that they can manage their garbage in their towns on their own.
Garbage is one of the leading problems of many local governments. It seems to be an addition to taxes and death, which are considered the only things constant on this earth. Day in and day out, people are bound to generate garbage. And with millions of people all around the globe, we could not even imagine how huge the garbage pile-up are in every locality. What we all know is that the problem is far from being solved, lurking like, as what Governor Pineda has described it, a “silent monster.”
The governor has talked with Holcim for a concerted effort to minimize garbage that require dumping in landfills. The private firm will be collecting plastics, which make up a large percentage of garbage generated, and use it in its products. To remove plastic materials from the garbage, especially where people are not segregating their waste materials, require effort, time, money and political will–each a necessity to radically solve this one stinking problem.
But, some mayors, as it seemed, are not interested in finding the answer in the daunting question of garbage. They are either not prioritizing garbage in their programs or they find the whole garbage brouhaha at big boring issue.
Come to think of it, the governor only had to require all mayors to come up with their respective solutions to the garbage problem. Once everyone did his job, then the whole province is already free from garbage. This she can do without raising a finger. But, the governor is not a “sitting governor.” She wants to take on the challenge for the whole province standing up and confronting the issue head on.
All she was asking was for the mayors to support the effort and they failed to give that to her.
Last year, an environment summit, tackling the burgeoning issue of garbage disposal, was also snubbed by all but one mayor. That is how boring the concern about garbage is to our mayors, so it is not surprising that we still find uncollected garbage or trash piling up in many corners to the detriment of the public.
I wonder if the mayors would also ignore a meeting where the governor issues budget for infrastructure for local government units. Maybe, hard projects are more appealing for them than efforts to solve the garbage puzzle. Why? Your guess is as good as mine.
While most, if not all mayor, are– borrowing a broadcaster’s words–revolving around the governor and wanted to become part of her team come the election, they do not share her enthusiasm to find means that would put a closure to the problem of garbage disposal. Again, what types of projects do the mayors want the governor to be leading them to, wherein they would cancel all their appointments just to attend in meetings set for the purpose? They might want to write them on a piece of paper and send them all to the governor, so that, next time Pineda calls for a meeting, she would not be disappointed when only a handful of them shows up.
