CLARK FREEPORT–Philippines’ AirAsia has launched its newest Clark to Singapore route last week.
On board Flight PQ 7491, AirAsia launched its first flight to Singapore leaving Clark International Airport at 6:10 a.m. and arriving at Singapore’s Changi Airport at 9:40 a.m.
The first Singapore flight carried 180 passengers including celebrity singer Jim Paredes, guests from the Singapore Tourism Board, officials from trade and tourism industry and mediamen.
“Today’s celebration reaffirms our commitment to help drive tourism and trade in the country especially in Clark, Pampanga where we base our operations. With our newest routes and low fares, we are connecting more and more people from Philippines to Singapore and to AirAsia’s extensive network covering 85 destinations in 24 countries,” Freddy Herrera, head of commercial for AirAsia Inc., said.
AirAsia’s Clark-Singapore inaugural flight was on Saturday following a pre-launch celebration dubbed as “Sing your way to Singapore” at Widus Convention Center in this freeport.
The launching was attended officials from the Clark International Airport Corporation, Department of Tourism, Singapore Tourism Board and officials from travel and leisure industries.
The celebration was kicked off with the arrival of guests from Metro Manila on board a special jeepney that has a sing-along service.
“Singapore is an attractive destination for Filipinos and AirAsia will make it even more attractive for our guests with our super low promo fares, reliable and on time service,” Herrera said.

MAGALANG, Pampanga – Some 1,800 day care kids from Barangay San Miguel, this town benefitted from the “Dental Immunization Program for Care Children” recently sponsored by Vice Governor Joseller “Yeng” Guiao.
The vice governor urged the pre-schoolers, guardians and their parents to help promote and develop good oral hygiene to avoid dental problems like plaque, tooth decay, gum disease and halitosis.
Guiao said he is hoping that day care kids could face the future with beautiful and lovely smile with their healthy teeth.
The dental immunization was realized through the assistance of Dr. Eddie Ponio, provincial hospital administrator of DiosdadoMacapagal Memorial Hospital (DMMH); Dra. Jing Ponio; wife, Jenny Guiao; and, the provincial social welfare and development office (PSWDO), along with other local officials.
The DPMMH administrator said the dental immunization program is part of the continuing effort of the provincial government to bring medical-dental services closer to the remote and marginalized communities.
Ponio said it’s advisable that kids’ teeth should be immunized with as he stressed that good oral hygiene is essential for the children.
Dra. Jing Ponio, provincial dentist, said the main objective of the dental immunization program is to reduce the caries incidents in the province.
It was learned that in this town alone, the caries incident has already reached 86 percent.
Three to 14 year old kids from the 629 day care centers in the 19 municipalities and two cities with a total of at least 25,160 day care children are expected to benefit from the program. ● Elaine Mercado

SUBIC FREEPORT–Tucked away in a fairly ordinary looking building inside Subic Bay is Central Luzon’s only indoor hydroponics system-producing the salad vegetables that are fertilizer and pesticide-free.
Two hydroponic systems, with six levels each, provide the nutrients to rows of healthy Frillice Lettuce, Wasabe greens, and Arugula plants.
“The program is a sustainable and renewable farming technology. Our produce are pesticide-free, grown in a controlled environment, and fresh because we harvest based on demand,” AtushiKadoi, Subic Amino general manger explained.
The project is run by Subic Amino Hightech Corporation which began growing the greens on its nutrient-rich water beds a few months ago.
The system is housed in a 6-meter by 15-meter room where temperature is maintained at 22 degrees celsius, cooler than most offices inside the Freeport.
A combination of LED and fluorescent bulbs is used, instead of direct sunlight, for the plants’ photosynthesis.
“Salad greens inside the Freeport come from Baguio or Tagaytay, meaning substantial travel time and the potential of mishandling. With hydroponics, we are assured that what we buy for our families or serve to our clients are grown in a safe and controlled environment,” Kadoi explained.
Subic Amino Hightech Corporation used to recycle CD and DVD casing into plastic pellets that may be used for new plastic-based products.
“Importation was a challenge in our plastics business, even if we are inside a Freeport zone. Since our company was in the business of renewables and environmentally-friendly technologies, we decided to put up the indoor hydroponics,” Kadoi said.
They are banking on the growing community of health conscious and the environmentalists at heart in Olongapo City and Subic Bay to give them the push that is needed to take the business into a higher level.
Aside from residents of Kalayaan and Binictican housing areas, Ben’s Kitchen at Harbor Point and Royal Duty Free shop have taken on the challenge of introducing a fully sustainable produce in their menu in their shelves.
“I hope more families will realize the advantage in taste of our produce. For businesses, I am sure that their clients will also value their brand by offering fresh and healthy meals,” he added.
Kadoi, who prefers to be called Ats, has lived in the Philippines for 15 years. He led a Japanese aid program for the Aetas after the Mt. Pinatubo erupted in the early 1990′s.
Frillice lettuce are available for P200 per 200 grams pack while a mixed leaves pack consisting of Frillice lettuce (a combined with two or three other leaves like arugula, wasabi greens, mustard leaf, beet, mustard spinach or black rose) goes for P260 per 200 gram packs.
“We also deliver as long as it is within the Freeport zone. Orders are taken in the morning and we harvest and deliver in the afternoon,” said Jackie Sison, marketing officer of Subic Amino. ●Butch Gunio

ANGELES CITY–The Regional Trial Court here has extended the temporary environmental protection order (TEPO) against the cutting of 486 trees along MacArthur Highway in this city and in Mabalacat City.
In an order dated December 14, RTC Branch 59 Judge Ma. Angelica Paras-Quiambao extended the TEPO in favor of the Save the Trees Coalition (STC).
RTC Branch 59 served as the special environment court.
“On the basis of the plaintiffs’ un-rebutted evidence, the court finds that there is a need to extend the TEPO,” Quiambao said in her order.
The extended TEPO disallows the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) from cutting, harming, injuring, earth-balling or transferring the subject trees and/or other actions that will result to the prejudice of the subject trees along the stretch of MacArthur Highway in Angeles City and in Mabalacat City until the termination of the case.
Quiambao said she ordered the TEPO extension because “judicial discretion dictates the propriety of extending TEPO, it being a matter of extreme urgency involving plaintiffs’ constitutional right to a balanced and healthful ecology in accord with the rhythm and harmony of nature. Should the subject trees not be totally protected until the case is terminated, grave injustice and irreparable injury will arise.”
Earlier, environmentalist group STC filed a civil case against Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr., Environment Secretary Ramon Paje, Public Works Secretary Rogelio Singson and Environmental Management Bureau in Central Luzon Chief Lormelyn Claudio.
STC leaders Cecile Yumul, Eugene Orejas, Louie Reyes, Dino Jose Doliente and NoleArcevo filed the civil case.
A road widening project of the DPWH along MacArthur Highway in the two cities includes the cutting of 486 trees.
The lower court has earlier issued a 72-hour TEPO in favor of the STC dated December 10.

STC lawyer Francisco Yabut reiterated that his clients are not against development but the cutting of trees.
“STC is against the killing of trees but not against the road expansion,” Yabut said.
In her order, Judge Quiambao pointed the same saying, “What plaintiffs are seeking to restrain is the killing of the trees but not the road expansion/widening project itself.”
Quiambao said the branch sheriff shall periodically monitor the existence of acts that are the subject matter of this TEPO until further order from the court. ●

SAN FERNANDO CITY, Pampanga, Dec 17 (PIA) — Senator Manuel Villar led this year’s roster of winners of the Most Outstanding Kapampangan Awards (MOKA).

Villar received his MOKA for Business and Entrepreneurship during the recognition night at the Bren Z. Guaio Convention Center which coincided with the 441st founding anniversary celebration of Pampanga.

“I have always been proud of my Kapampangan lineage. That is why I make it a point to bring something back to the province whenever I can as a legislator and also as chairman of the Villar foundation,” the two-term senator said.

It was not widely-known that Villar is a true-blooded Kapampangan although he was born in Moriones, Tondo.

His maternal grandfather, Nicolas David Bamba, came from Purok Bamba, Barangay San Nicolas in Sasmuan town.

His mother, Curita Bamba, lived in Orani, Bataan, which was originally part of Pampanga.

Known by his moniker “Mr. Sipag at Tiyaga,” Villar’s rags-to-riches story inspired many entrepreneurs.

As a young boy, he sold seafood at the Divisoria market.

Villar started his real estate business with a capital of only P10,000 and delivered sand and gravel to construction sites.

His company, Vista Land, grew to become the largest house-building company in the country today.

According to the Arts, Culture and Tourism Office of Pampanga (ACTOP), MOKA aims to recognize individuals who have excelled in their respective endeavors or professions and have brought pride to the Kapampangan race.

Nominees must be a Kapampangan either by blood which means at least one of the parents is Kapampangan or must be born in any of the towns or cities of Pampanga.

Also this year’s recipients are PSupt. Bernardo Perez (Law Enforcement), Felix Tienzo (Social Service), Patrick Cura (Youth Service), Leonardo Canlas (Education), Norman de Jesus (Agriculture), Fr. Victor Nicomedes Nicdao (Religion), Lillian Borromeo (Culture), John Manalili (Mass Media), Catalina Bagasina (Government Service), Allan Pineda popularly known as Apl.de.Ap (Arts), and Maria Miguelita Santiago as Outstanding Honorary Kapampangan.

Outstanding Honorary Kapampangan Award is bestowed to non-Kapampangans who rendered exemplary service to the province of Pampanga.

Awardees were chosen through a rigid selection process by a committee comprised of prominent individuals.

To date, more than 400 individuals have been awarded the MOKA trophy.
