SUBIC BAY FREEPORT— In a gesture of its commitment to support the community service program of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), Philip Morris International (PMI) provided the indigenous Ayta tribe in the Subic Bay Freeport with medicines worth P125,000, the first batch to be given under the firm’s medicine donation program.
Philip Morris, which operates its regional leaf tobacco warehouse in this free port, turned over several boxes of various medicines and vitamins to the Aytas of Pastolan Village here through Atty. Wilma Eisma, manager of local regulatory affairs and community relations ofPhilip Morris Phils. Manufacturing Inc. (PMPMI).
The donation was received on behalf of the tribesmen by Armina Belleza-Llamas, manager of the SBMA Public Relations Department. Belleza said that Philip Morris also committed to replenish themedicine supply on a quarterly basis for the next five years.
SBMA Chairman Roberto Garcia said that the PMI medicine donation clearly manifests the continuing commitment of the company, in partnership with local delivery service provider Air21, to help the indigenous people living inside the Freeport area.
”Philip Morris, along with the Air21, has always been a partner of the SBMA in its many community service projects that seek to expand health and educational assistance to the communities around the Subic Bay Freeport,” Garcia noted.
Eisma said meanwhile that the donation “is only part of our commitment to the community in support of the health and wellness program of the SBMA for the Ayta tribal community in Pastolan, especially the children.”
In August 2011, some 200 children and 100 mothers in the Pastolan Ayta village received free medical check-up and medicines during the launching of a medical clinic program initiated by the SBMA, PhilipMorris Philippines Inc., Air21 and Jaycees International.
In January 2008, PMPI also donated textbooks and computer sets to public schools in Pastolan, as well as barangay Kalalake in OlongapoCity in partnership with the Knowledge Channel .
PMI has established a multi-million dollar PMPMI regional warehouse in the Subic Bay Freeport in an area which is recognized as a part of the Ayta ancestral domain. The Olongapo City government has started its watershed characterization study with the assistance of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Subicwater, operator of the water system in the city.
A watershed is an area of land from which all runoff drains or “sheds” to the same river, lake, or other body of water. City Supervising Agriculturist Jhobal Sebarrotin explained that through watershed characterization, primary and secondary data in relation to the watersheds’ socio-economic, biological and physical factors will be studied to come up with an integrated watershed management plan.
Moreover, City Planning and Development Office Engineer Marivic Nierras pointed out that the survey includes study of the flora and fauna, vulnerability assessment, socio-economic profiles of the inhabitants and water and soil samples from the watershed areas.
“Water systems are life supporting and a healthy water system is essential for a strong economy and a good quality of life so we must come up with an integrated watershed management approach to promote sustainable development,” said Mayor James “Bong” Gordon Jr.
According to CENRO Atty. Marife Castillo, Olongapo is blessed with abundant natural resources; especially the presence of watershed which comprises more or less 70% of the city and the results of watershed characterization study will be significant to the sustainable management of these resources, including land use development.
CENRO provides the technical assistance needed in the study. It can be recalled that a watershed development study was also conducted in the city in 1985, results and recommendations of which are being used as guide in the present day survey.
Sebarrotin said that the watershed characterization study will be finished in May 2012, and, based on the results thereof; the necessary recommendations will be prepared immediately for the approval of the city mayor.

OLONGAPO – Mayor James “Bong” Gordon Jr. has reminded Olongapo residents to start preparing for the rainy season now, stressing the importance of putting in place whatever is needed to contain the possible effects of typhoons and other natural calamities.

DRRMO chief Angie Layug advised Olongapenos to fix their roofs, clean their gutters and help the city government in cleaning and de-silting canals and waterways. Layug also said that in cases of torrential rains, residents living within the vicinity of areas prone to landslides, rockslides and floods should exercise precautionary measures and be ready to evacuate before the situation worsens.
Likewise, the City Health Office is reminding the public to dispose of containers that might collect water and clean up potential breeding grounds of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
“Now is the best time to search for and destroy mosquito breeding grounds so we can limit their population density even before the rainy season hits,” said City Health Officer Dr. Arnildo Tamayo. “If we do not limit the population of mosquitoes, chances are, there will be more mosquitoes to bite people and transfer dengue,” he added.
Mosquitoes are very prolific breeders; it only takes 12 days for a mosquito egg to become an adult mosquito. A female Aedes aegypti mosquito (the specie that carries dengue) is fertile throughout its life and can lay 60 to 100 eggs each time.
Dengue has become a year-long communicable disease in the country. With the upcoming rainy season, cases are expected to increase significantly.
The city government advises the public to inspect and regularly replace water in flower vases, pails and uncovered containers as they become mosquito breeding grounds.
