Bataan Freeport export firm renews training pact

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–The rapidly changing landscape of the flow of information, the emergence of digital content, the people’s power and responsibilities in the time of social media – these are just some of the topics
discussed during the WebSm@rt learning session conducted by leading wireless services provider Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart).
School paper advisers and campus journalists from 16 schools in Pampanga gathered at the province’s System Plus College Foundation to participate in the WebSm@rt training. This training series that Smart is conducting in several schools across the country aims to educate and equip school journalists in this fast paced age of Internet-powered new media.
“We must keep up with the times when it comes to sharing and consuming
information,” said Ramon Isberto, head of Smart’s Public Affairs. “We initiated this series of training for schools because we think academic institutions should benefit most from the free exchange of information enabled by the Internet. We want the schools to learn to adapt and hone their skills, especially when it comes to handling and managing bits and pieces of information on the net.”
Through these trainings, Smart said it is also encouraging schools to supplement their campus journalism programs with online versions of their publications and dabble in digital and social content which is a quick, and cost-efficient way of disseminating information and engaging their readers.
The Websm@rt training includes a basic course of new media plus a workshop about writing and producing online content.
The Resource speaker from Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility,
Hector Bryant Macale, also discussed cyber ethics and touched on the
country’s cybercrime prevention law.
At the end of the training-workshop the schools managed to create their own websites using the Infinite.ly platform. Infinite.ly, a startup based in the Philippines, is a partner of Smart in the “webifying” of schools nationwide through online site-building and content creation via the Smart Schools Program.
The schools also created a blog site for their campus paper using Journ.ph—a multi-user blog site powered by Smart especially designed for school publications in the Philippines. Currently, more than 300 schools nationwide are using the platform to share their school/community stories in the web.
Aside from the Pampanga Websm@rt training, Smart also participated in the Davao City Division Schools Press Conference held at Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School in Matina, Davao City.
More than 400 teachers and students from different schools in region participated in Smart’s sessions in new media handled by TV5 Davao’s news desk editor Jef Tupas, and lectures on Journ.ph – Smart’s flagship campus journalism program.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–In a tender to uphold eco-friendly efforts under the SM Cares Corporate Social Responsibility Program, SM Supermalls has launched its 4th edition of SM Eco-bag last November 12, 2012 a simultaneous event in every SM Supermalls nationwide.
This year’s edition of SM Eco-bag is highlighted on the theme “Engage to Change,” which depicts input of the community in a nationwide program to prudent plastic use. The designs were based on the four elements of nature: air, earth, fire, and water. These were selected and distributed one each for Metro Manila, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, which will be used as the official designs of the 2012 SM Eco-bag. This stalks from the belief of SM Prime Holdings President, Mr. Hans T. Sy. For the past three years, SM has helped maintainable shopping ways through this Eco Bag program: 2009 had the “green bag”; 2010 had the “Encouraging Action” and; in 2011 “I am Involved”

Clark to host fun-filled pre-Christmas events

CLARK FREEPORT–The Clark Development Corporation (CDC) has lined-up a battery of fun-filled events in preparation for the much-awaited Yuletide Season.
According to Noemi Garcia, CDC Tourism Promotions Office Manager, international flavor greeted the start of November with the recent visit of several candidates from the renowned Ms. Earth beauty pageant as well as delegates from Malaysia.
Garcia said the Ms. Earth candidates visited this Freeport for several tree planting activities in select areas here, particularly at the site being developed by the Global Gateways Logistics City (GGLC).
This was followed by the Gala Night of the recently-concluded 2012 “Tara na sa Malaysia” Promotional Tour and Roadshow.
Prior to the Gala Night, Tourism Malaysia and the rest of its delegation were at the Holy Angel University where the students and school administrators enjoyed the cultural dances and “Teh Tarik” demonstrations, as well as other fun games and activities that were prepared for them.
Last Sunday, some 400 runners and cyclists joined the “Putik Pare! Biathlon Race” held at the Sacobia Bridge here. During the event, participants plunged into a 50-meter long mud pit.
On Nov. 24, join the fun run hosted by Herbis Bender Associates Design at the Clark Parade Grounds. This would be followed by the “Clark Miyamit Falls Trail Run” on Nov. 25. The trail is an 80-kilometer distance ultra-run from the Clark Parade Grounds to Miyamit Falls.
The great outdoors of the Clark Freeport will, again, take center stage on Nov. 23 to 25 for the annual Clark Horse Fest 2012 at the El Kabayo Stables. More than 40 thoroughbreds are expected to join the parade from El Kabayo to the CDC Parade grounds during the two-day event that would be participated by sports enthusiasts, celebrities, and known horse breeders as well as horse owners.
Another fun run hosted by the Institute of Electronic Engineers is set on Dec. 9. Also on the same day, the Centennial Road near the Mabalacat Gate will be the venue for the Tillbury Race – a horse race that is expected to draw hordes of tourists to the Freeport.
And finally, for its Christmas extravaganza, the CDC will again celebrate the annual “Clarksiyahan 2012” – a Clark-wide Christmas celebration that would be highlighted by a ceremonial Christmas lighting, giant lantern display, live band performances, bazaar, disco and ballroom dancing, and fireworks display.

FDA warns public on counterfeit drugs intake

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–The Center for Health Development 3 (CHD-3) –Food and Drugs Administration warns the public on the proliferation and adverse effects of counterfeit drugs intake as it observes the second National Consciousness Week against Counterfeit Drugs from November 19-23.
With this year’s observance theme “Para sa Kalusugang Pangkalahatan, Pekeng Gamot ating Labanan,” the FDA aims to increase the awareness of the public on counterfeit drugs as a health threat.
Intake of fake drugs, according to FDA officer Meliza Salongga, may worsen a patient’s condition, result to another illness, cause Adverse Drug Reactions and may lead to death in serious cases.
According to Salongga, these fake medicines are usually sold cheaper than legitimate drugs by peddlers and stores operating without an FDA license.
A legitimate drug’s package has clearly printed name, logo of the manufacturer, FDA product registration number, lot number form and expiration date.
Imprints on the packaging of counterfeit drugs are usually lighter, faded and easily erased.
Due to low quality of manufacturing, fake tablets are soft and easily pulverized, capsules are moist, parts of suspension settle down and harden and floating specks are seen on syrup or injectables. ●–Au Catu

987 FLOOD PRONE BGYS. IN REGION III, OVER .25M FAMILIES AT RISK

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, April 8 (PIA) — The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) has identified 987 flood-prone barangays with 255,159 families in Central Luzon.
The breakdown per province is as follows: Aurora -106 barangays in 8 towns with 27,596 families at risk; Bataan – 87 barangays in 11 municipalities with 34,514 threatened families; Bulacan – 133 barangays in 18 towns and 3,346 families; Nueva Ecija – 235 flood-prone barangays in 24 towns and 71,881 families; Pampanga- 231 barangays in 15 towns and 71,881 families; Tarlac – 141 barangays in 14 towns and 41,857 families facing threat; and Zambales with 54 barangays in 7 towns and 13,748 families at risk.
As part of the disaster risk reduction planning, the provinces have also identified the number of schools to be occupied as evacuation centers and what areas are also designated as evacuation centers in case disasters hit the areas.
In Aurora, eight elementary schools, covered courts, the municipal buildings, churches and identified higher grounds are ready for occupation by evacuees.
There are 23 schools, the Dinalupihan Sports Complex, the Provincial Capitol, the Peoples’ Center and municipal covered courts are assigned evacuation centers in Bataan.
Meanwhile, Nueva Ecija identified Days Hotel, the Convention Center and Sports Complex in Palayan City, the Ladies Dormitory in Palayan City and 505 schools as evacuation centers.
Cabanatuan City designated the Transport Central Terminal, NFA Cabanatuan compound, barangay halls, gyms, covered courts, chapels and the Ladies Dormitory and 31 schools.
The Provincial Capitol Grounds, the Pampanga Sports Complex, and covered courts in the municipalities and 135 schools are considered higher grounds in Pampanga while the Gabay Diwa Rehab Center and seven schools will accommodate evacuees from Angeles City.
For Olongapo City, the Multi-Purpose Skills Training Center, the East Tapinac Oval Track, the Remy Fields at the SBMA, Upper Mau Camp (SBMA), barangay halls and five schools will serve as evacuation centers.
Identified in Zambales as potential centers are covered courts, barangay halls, community livelihood centers, municipal auditoriums, gyms, the public malls and 82 schools.
Some 15 schools, the Paniqui and the Moncada evacuation centers, barangay halls, covered courts, and productivity centers are slated to be shelters in Tarlac in times of calamities.
For Bulacan, evacuees may occupy the provincial gym, SM Baliuag, Provincial Engineering Office, and the Bulacan Sports Complex.

Learn From Your Mistakes!In the present chess world, there are many chess books out in the market that offer excellent ideas on how to play strong moves. However, I believe these books have limitations due to test of time and even if you have thousands of books you cannot deny the fact that “Blunder or Mistakes” in chess may be committed during the game.
Now in this article, we shall explore “why a chess player commit mistakes?” There are three (3) things that I want to discuss. (1) Poor opening Preparation (2) Miscalculation and (3) Making a Plan.These three (3) are the most common mistakes in chess game often seen on a amateur chess game.
When I was reading my book “Kasparov Chess Opening Repertoire,” the world champion said that his opening preparation is up to twenty (20) moves or more due to the inclusion of his middle game preparation or positioning of pieces to a fixed plan.Those players who do not give importance to the Opening Preparation can be compared to a runner without shoes.
When I was in CLRAA 2012 held at Iba Zambales, I witnessed how a player from another province smashed an Olongapo City chess bet on the opening stage, I will not mention his name to protect his integrity. On that day he lost a match, he went to the staircase of the HRM Building of Ramon Magsaysay Technological University (RMTU) sat down, shaking his head in diasappointment of his game.
Well as for our chess players who lost the tournament I believed they’ve learned a lot from their opening mistakes. Miscalculation and Making a Plan. These two common mistakes are interconnected to each other. When you are making a plan you must have a precise calculation in order to achieve your target goal.

Unfortunately I lost due to time trouble because I cannot formulate any plan when I got a clear advantage. U.S. Hospital Ship to Visit PH, Help Asian Countries Prepare for Disasters

Washington Seamen assigned to a U.S. naval hospital ship are loading supplies on board as the ship gets ready for a four-and-half month voyage to help four Southeast Asian countries prepare for natural calamities.
The USNS Mercy leaves its home port of San Diego May 1 bound for Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia.
It will spend 14 days in each country to help local governments and aid providers to prepare for natural disasters.
Earthquakes, typhoons, tsunamis and volcanoes periodically afflict the four countries that lie in the region known as the “ring of fire.”
The USNS Mercys mission, labeled Pacific Partnership 2012, is undertaken to train militaries and civilians to work together in a coordinated response before the next disaster strikes.
“Were preparing in calm to respond in crisis,” said U.S. Navy Captain James Morgan, the mission commander.
The Pacific Partnership, now in its seventh year, sprang out of the 2004 tsunami that devastated Indonesia and surrounding countries. Partners in this years mission include 12 other countries on the Asia-Pacific rim and representatives from many nonprofit groups and international agencies.
“Nongovernmental organizations and the international agencies are a critical part of the continuity that maintains and builds capacity with local populations from year to year,” Morgan said. Drug-crazed bum takes family hostage

MEYCAUAYAN City — A jobless man who was under the influence of drugs held his own family hostage in Bgy. Pandayan, yesterday morning, City police chief Supt. Sidney Villaflor said.

Villaflor said that the suspect, Luisito Rubio, 42, of 5 C. Rivera St., Bgy. Pandayan, held hostage his live-in partner Elsie Valderama, 38, sales clerk; Alicia Reyes Rubio, 87, his children Sherline Rubio, 19, and Carlo, 16, inside their house.

Investigators said that about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, the suspect went home in a rowdy behavior and after an hour, his live-in partner noticed that he took a knife from the kitchen and for no apparent reason held at knifepoint and confined the victims against their will inside a room and threatened to set the house on fire.

At this juncture, the suspect’s live-in partner called the barangay tanods for assistance through her cellular phone.

After receiving the information, Bgy. Pandayan officials sought the assistance of Community Police Action Center 6 of the Meycauayan police led by PO1 Jonathan Felipe and Insp. June Tabigo-on, who immediately responded and arrested the suspect after almost an hour of negotiation.

“Halos apat na araw nang walang tulog ang suspek kaya siguro na-praning,” one of the arresting officers said.

Recovered from the suspect were a heat sealed transparent plastic sachet containing shabu and a kitchen knife.

The suspect and the recovered pieces of evidence were brought to the Bulacan Provincial Crime Laboratory in Camp Gen. Alejo Santos in Malolos City for drug test and laboratory examination.

“Hirap na hirap kami habang dina-dala namin sa crime lab, kasi nagpupumiglas at ang taas pa ng tama sa kanya ng droga,” police said.

Ex-mayor’s escort, another slain in Pampanga ambush

CAMP Olivas, Pampanga — A former bodyguard of a mayor and another man were killed while a member of the Army was critically wounded in an ambush staged by unidentified men in Bgy. Telapayong, Arayat town, on Thursday.
Senior Supt. R’Win Pagkalinawan, Pampanga police director, identified the fatalities as Reynaldo Balatbat, 43, of Bgy. Pandacaqui, Mexico town, and a certain Moymoy.
Critically wounded was Pfc. Jay Pineda, 37, assigned at the Pampanga Ready Reserve Battalion.
There were reports that Balatbat was a former bodyguard of Magalang Mayor Romy Pekson.
Investigators said Balatbat’s group was on board a white Honda car going to Mexico town to attend the funeral of a friend when they were bumped by a speeding red car on the Arayat-Magalang Road. The victims’ car was thrown off the road shoulder before it crashed into a concrete post.
While trapped inside the car, the victims were peppered with bullets by the suspects who were armed with long and short firearms.
Police recovered an M-16 rifle and a cal. .45 pistol from the victims’ vehicle.
Pagkalinawan said they are looking into different angles, including a report that a rebel group was responsible for the ambush of the victims.

ATHLETES and adventure seekers will gather one more time tomorrow at the Clark Freeport in Pampanga for the third and final leg of the Vaseline Men Xterra Off-Road Triathlon Series.
The Putik Pare team duathlon will have participants in pairs alternately doing an 18K off-trail run and 10K mountain bike race. The pairs will then go through a mud pit and must cross the finish line together. Categories are All Female, All Male and Mixed Pair.
The Vaseline Men Xterra Philippines is sanctioned by Xterra, the world’s biggest off-road triathlon series. The previous legs were the Pang Rave Run held in Timberland Heights in San Mateo, Rizal, and the Xterra Weekend held in Liloan, Cebu.
