University of the Philippines Pep Squad capitalized on backbreaking stunts and emphasized equality and freedom to grab a record-tying eighth cheerdance title in the 75th University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) on Saturday.

“It’s the symbol of our liberties and we have shown a lot of stunts that are at par with international standards because we joined and won competitions abroad,” former Pep Squad co-skipper Laurence Martin Bautista told reporters.
“We know that perfection is the rule of the game in UAAP but we trusted the difficulty of our stunts. We just stuck to that point,” he added.
Entering the court with shaved heads, Bautista said there was hesitation on the part of his female teammates even if it was done for charity. Hair donations will be manufactured as wigs for cancer patients in celebration of the national awareness month for people with alopecia or baldness.
“Medyo natakot ang mga girls kasi first time nilang kalbuhin at siyempre hesitant sila sa magiging hitsura nila, parang it turned out na okay at lumitaw ang confidence namin lahat,” Bautista said, adding the idea came from multi-titled coach Lalaine Pereña.

UP took home P340,000 while Far Eastern University (FEU) finished second to settle for P200,000 while surprise third placer National University (NU) got P140,000. Banking on a Disney-inspired theme, this is the first time since the competition began in 1994 that NU has made a podium finish.
Missing out the top three for the second straight year is the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe after finishing fourth. Last year’s runner-up La Salle Animo Squad took fifth while the Ateneo de Manila Blue Babble Batallion, Adamson Pep Squad, and University of the East occupied the sixth to eighth spots, respectively.
UP also bagged the title for best group stunts with FEU and NU placing second and third, respectively. UP rookie Nicolette Erica Ambulo meanwhile was picked as this year’s Samsung Stunner.
A foreign panel of judges rated the performances this year. They were Huang Yu Chun (president of Chinese Taipei Cheerleading Federation), Joe Jackson (USASF Safety/Legality Judge), Manuel Malonzo (Associate Director of Chameleon Dance Theater), Julien Leblond and Eftimiu Luminita (coach of Women’s Gymnastics of the Municipal Sports Club).

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) may fail to meet its self-imposed deadline for coming out with the list of party-list organizations that will be allowed to participate in next year’s midterm polls.
This was the projection of Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes after admitting that the en banc members are still deliberating on which they will allow and disallow to run next year.
“We have to work on the majority. We still have yet to have a unified stand on the numerous issues we are facing,” said Brillantes. “Thus, we are having a difficult time and we may not be able to meet our imposed deadline of end of September.”
Among the issues they are still deliberating are the accreditations of groups that have multi-millionaire nominees, presence of multi-sectoral groups that don’t have any clear sector to represent and on whether it should be the group or nominee that can be considered as marginalized.
As an alternative, the poll chief said they might just come out with a separate list for disqualified and accredited party-list groups instead of their initial plan of having just one.
“We are still looking at September 30 but we might just come out with the disqualified groups first. For those accredited, it might just be on October. October 10 probably,” said Brillantes.
Earlier, Brillantes said they wanted to complete the deliberation on the party-list bets before the October 1 to 5 filing period of certificates of candidacy (COCs) for individual candidates for all positions.
Already registered with the Comelec but are still undergoing review are 124 groups while another 165 have pending petitions for accreditation.
All these 289 party list groups have filed Manifestations of Intent to Participate for the next elections with the the poll body. (HDT/Sunnex)

SAN FRANCISCO — Neither side in a bitter patent battle is satisfied with Apple Inc.’s $1 billion jury verdict over Samsung Electronics Co. after a three-week trial this summer.
Samsung wants a new trial. Apple is seeking an additional $707 million in damages and interest.
The two companies filed a blizzard of legal papers late Friday and early Saturday with their demands that a federal judge in San Jose significantly amend — or toss out altogether — the jury’s August 24 verdict.
The jury found that 26 Samsung products ripped off Apple’s technology at the heart of its iPhones and iPads.
“Samsung made a calculated business decision to copy the industrial designs, graphical user interfaces, and touchscreen navigation technology of the iPhone and iPad,” Apple lawyers wrote in court papers, arguing for the additional damages. “Samsung has reaped extraordinary rewards from its wrongful sale of iPhone and iPad clones by taking market share, revenues, and profits from Apple.”
The Apple lawyers contend that the “massive damage to the iPhone’s distinctive product identity caused by Samsung’s sale of millions of iPhone clones is irreversible.”
US District Judge Lucy Koh has scheduled a December 6 hearing to discuss the myriad issues raised by both companies. Samsung said it will appeal if Koh turns down its demands.
The two companies are locked in a ferocious struggle for supremacy in the global smartphone market. Samsung is the worldwide leaders in smartphone sales, securing a market share of 33 percent in the second quarter, up from 17 percent a year ago. Apple’s fell slightly to 17 percent, from 19 percent a year ago.
Apple accuses Samsung of essentially selling knockoffs of the Cupertino based company’s iPhones. Apple filed a lawsuit in San Jose federal court, alleging patent infringement. It was the latest legal action between the two companies, who are battling in courts in 10 countries over smartphone technology.
On Friday, Samsung asked the San Jose judge for a new trial. The company’s lawyer argued that the jury’s verdict was unreasonable and unsupported by the testimony and evidence. The company’s lawyers also complained that the judge’s strict constraints on the number of witnesses and testimony time deprived it of a fair trial.
“The Court’s constraints on trial time, witnesses and exhibits were unprecedented for a patent case of this complexity and magnitude, and prevented Samsung from presenting a full and fair case in response to Apple’s many claims,” the company’s lawyer wrote in court documents.
Representatives of both companies couldn’t be reached for comment. (AP)

NEW YORK — A visitor to the Bronx Zoo was mauled by a tiger on Friday after he leaped from an elevated monorail train and plummeted over a fence into an exhibit, police and zoo officials said.
Police, who initially reported the man had lost a leg in the mauling, later said he suffered puncture wounds to his back. They also said he suffered a broken ankle and a broken arm, possibly from the jump.
The attack happened at around 3 p.m. in the Wild Asia exhibit, where a train with open sides takes visitors over the Bronx River and through a forest, where they glide along the top edge of a fence, past elephants, deer and a tiger enclosure.
Passengers aren’t strapped in on the ride, and the 25-year-old man apparently jumped out of his train car, leaping far enough to clear the perimeter fence.
Details of what happened next were unclear, but police said the tiger attacked. The zoo’s staff used a fire extinguisher to chase the tiger off, and the man was instructed to roll under an electrified wire to get to safety, zoo director Jim Breheny said in a statement. Zookeepers then called the tiger into a holding area.
The man was conscious and talking after the mauling, Breheny said.
“If not for the quick response by our staff and their ability to perform well in emergency situations, the outcome would have been very different,” he said.
Police said the man was hospitalized in critical condition.
The Bronx Zoo, one of America’s largest, sprawls over 265 acres (107 hectares) and contains hundreds of animals, many in habitats meant to resemble natural settings. Its exhibits include Tiger Mountain, Congo Gorilla Forest and World of Reptiles. (AP)
