Mayor assures more health coverage

ANGELES CITY — Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan recently assured that more indigent residents here will be covered under the PhilHealth indigent program to help the agency meet its universal health coverage program for 2013.
Pamintuan assured PhilHealth officials here through a message read through Vice Mayor Vicky Vega Cabigting that 20,000 PhilHealth coverage cards are set to be distributed starting this month.
The mayor said the city is set at meeting the outpatient-primary care for indigents in line with the Millennium Development Goals.
Cabigting said that one of the reasons for Pamintuan’s winning of 2012 World Mayor Prize is the good health programs for Angeles City from the Dialysis Center to the reforms initiated at the Ospital Ning Angeles.
Pamintuan joined the ranks of the best mayors around the globe as he was ranked eighth among the top 10 awardees for the 2012 World Mayor Prize.
Pamituan also thanked PhilHealth for helping in the health programs of the city. Pamintuan in an earlier statement said that more than 20,000 indigent residents of Angeles City will soon receive their PhilHealth cards which are good up to December 31, 2013.
“With this, the beneficiaries will be able to avail of discounts when availing of medical services in PhilHealth accredited hospitals and clinics including the Ospital Ning Angeles (ONA) and the various Rural Health Units (RHUs) of the city government. This serves as the new year’s gift of Mayor Ed Pamintuan to all indigent Angeleños,” Pamintuan said.

Groups to plant hardwood trees in Morong, Bataan

DINALUPIHAN, Bataan–Fifty hectares in the upland area of Morong town will be planted with hardwood trees.
The reforestation project in Sitio Kanawan, an Aeta inhabited upland territory, will be undertaken by oil company PTT Philippines, an environmental group Mga Bayani Ng Kalikasan, and other concerned civic and environment groups.
Felicito “Tong” Payumo, congressional candidate in Bataan first district and a known environmental advocate, initiated the greening project. He is the adviser of Mga Bayani Ng Kalikasan.
PTT Philippines will provide the seedlings of lawaan, apitong, narra, and other hardwood species.
The Aeta Magbukun Tribe will manage the nursery of the seedlings to be planted.
About 116 Aeta families will directly benefit in the project.
Last month, in a symposium on the biodiversity and culture held in Sinagtala Resort in Orani town, Payumo asked the young generation to help in the preservation of the Bataan National Park (BNP).
He said that the youth and the future generation should participate in the effort to preserve the Bataan Park, which is the source of potable water of surrounding municipalities.
Large portion of the forested area of Morong is part of BNP.
Payumo recently abdicated his position as Bases Conversion Development Authority chairman and now running in the post he already held for three consecutive terms.

LP bets likely winners in Bataan – Garcia

BALANGA City, Bataan: A landslide victory for the administration’s senatorial bets is seen in Bataan despite major political hopefuls in the province clashing against each other, Gov. Enrique Garcia said Wednesday.
The governor said opposing candidates for congressman, governor, vice-governor, provincial board members and majority of the municipal contenders are one in supporting the senatorial bets of the Liberal Party.
Garcia said his faction and that of Chairman Felicito Payumo of the Bases Conversion Development Authority are in full support of the administration candidates.
Under the group of Garcia are second district Rep. Albert Garcia for governor, Vice Gov. Efren Pascual for reelection, first district Rep. Herminia Roman also seeking reelection and the elder Garcia to replace his son Albert as congressman.
The Garcias are under the National Unification Party while Pascual and Rep. Roman belong to the LP.
At the opposite political fence are Felicito Payumo who resigned as BCDA chair for congressman in the first district, Dinalupihan Mayor Joel Jaime Payumo for governor, Jay Consunji for vice governor and former governor Leonardo Roman for congressman in the second district.

Traders warned on permit deadline

CANDABA — The local government unit (LGU) here warned business owners that it would impose closure order to commercial establishments that fail to secure business permits and pay other necessary local taxes on or before January 20.
Leny Manalo, chief of staff of the Office of the Mayor, asked the members of the local finance in a meeting held Thursday to identify delinquent taxpayers who failed to settle obligations on the said date.
This came as stall owners occupying more than two units in the public market reportedly failed to cooperate with the Municipal Government’s drive to improve its income generating mechanism.
“Kung yung maliliit na nagtitinda ay nagbabayad ng permit bakit sila na malalaki pa ang pwesto sa palengke ay ayaw magbayad?” Manalo said.
The municipality has also intensified the implementation of Business One Stop Shop (Boss) program, which aimed at expediting the procedures on application of business permits and licenses.
Under the program, all offices with direct participation in the processing of the application for renewal of business permits will be housed in one place for the smooth flow of documents and for transparent and speedy transactions.

Philippine police rescue kidnapped Indian businessman, kill 4 abductors in shootout

MANILA, Philippines – Philippine officials say police have rescued a kidnapped Indian businessman whose severed finger was delivered to his family. Four abductors were killed in a shootout and another was arrested.
Senior Superintendent Renato Gumban says Gurtej Singh was rescued Friday during a raid of the kidnappers’ hideout in northern Bulacan province.
He says Singh and his wife Kulwinder Kaur were talking to clients of their money-lending business along a road in Pulilan township when the kidnappers struck on Dec. 22.
They demanded 20 million pesos ($490,000) in ransom. The amount was later reduced to 1 million pesos ($24,500).
Gumban says Kaur was freed Saturday after her family paid 277,000 pesos ($6,800). When Singh’s ransom did not arrive Sunday, the kidnappers left his severed finger near his home.

Hundreds expected in Sasmuan's 5-day dance ritual

SASMUAN — After putting away the Christmas decorations and ushering in the New Year, the people of this town and devotees from all across Pampanga will officially end the Yuletide season with a five-day dance ritual in honor of the town’s patron saint.
Starting this Sunday, a mix crowd of devotees, people with disabilities and tourists will form part of the endless sea of participants to this year’s “Kuraldal Atlung Ari.”
Kuraldal Atlung Ari is an annual folk religious dance ritual that has spawned hundreds of followers and believers through the years. It takes place at the chapel of St. Lucy, with participants taking part in a series of impassioned dances.
The occasion is one for merrymaking and revelry, where rich and savory food abound and goodwill flows as Sasmuaneños open their homes to family, friends, pilgrims and strangers.
January 6, in the Catholic calendar, is used to be known and commemorated as the Feast of the Three Kings, hence the term Atlung Ari (Three Kings), according to Tomen.
Devotees from across Pampanga and neighboring provinces troop to this town, bringing with them hopes that an ardent wish, a long-awaited pregnancy and an immediate cure for disease would be granted with their participation in the festivity.
Redentor Sazon, 57, of Sta. Rita town has been trooping to the event for as long as he can remember. He said his participation is more of his personal way of expressing his thanks to God and asking for good health for his family in the coming year.
“The kuraldal is an event where people, young and old and the rich dance together as one to thank God and their patron saint and ask for further favors. It is more than the usual recently invented mutant festivals were people dance choreographed moves. This one is a religious festival as old as the town itself,” Sazon said.
Tomen said Kuraldal Atlung Ari will end with a bang on January 10, the evening of the “kawakasan” (ending).
After the 6 p.m. procession of the image of Apung Lucia, a street Mass will be held in front of the barangay chapel, where thousands of devotees are expected to flock to honor their beloved patron saint.
The event is also an instant commercial opportunity for local merchants who clog the streets of this town selling their wares.

Party-list group holds medical mission in Sasmuan

SASMUAN — The Alliance of Laborers and Employees (ALE) party-list group hosted a free medical mission at the municipal covered court here last Wednesday as part of the group’s contribution to the upcoming town fiesta this weekend.
ALE Representative Catalina Cabrera-Bagasina, together with the Local Government of Sasmuan, organized the medical mission that benefited indigents from all over the town.
The mission featured free medical consultations and medicines that were given to the beneficiaries.
The medicines included antibiotics, vitamins and other child medicines.
Bagasina also donated several units of nebulizers that aim to provide quality health care services to the people in various barangay health centers.
ALE is a newly formed party list which represents laborers, both formal and informal workers, and all employees. It is based in Pampanga.
According to the group’s website, it aims to “empower and advance the cause of laborers and formal and informal workers and employees.” It hopes to train employees to teach them to become entrepreneurs themselves.
Bagasina, a native of this town and its former mayor, said the mission also catered to other sectors of the community.
She said that ALE is widening is support programs for laborers and employees so as to be able to cater to their needs.

Parish to donate relief goods to typhoon victims

CANDABA — Members of the Lord’s Baptism Parish in Barangay Pasig in this town will donate relief goods to typhoon victims in Compostela Valley.
Aristotle Maniago, parish priest, said they were able to collect a variety of goods from parishioners who attended the masses held before the end of December last year.
“Mayroong naka-assign na item bawat simbang gabi kaya marami tayong naipon. Talagang marami ang tumugon at tumulong, siguro gusto rin naman nilang makatulong sa ating mga kababayan na hanggang ngayon ay bumabangon pa mula sa hagupit ng kalamidad,” Maniago added.
He said the relief goods will be delivered to the recipients through Sagip Kapamilya, the emergency humanitarian assistance program of ABS-CBN Foundation Inc., which provides food and non-food relief to affected communities of disasters.
It is also engaged in rehabilitation and disaster risk reduction projects in the affected communities.

Free eye screening benefits cataract patients

CANDABA — An eye specialist from the San Luis District Hospital (SLDH) conducted on Friday a free eye screening for the benefit of the indigent residents in this town.
Dr. Brandon Santos, an ophthalmologist, said the free eye consultation was held to reach out to poor patients from the barangays of Pasig, Lanang, Mandasig, Paralaya, Pescarodores, San Agustin and Bambang, who usually visit him in the district hospital every Friday at SLDH.
Santos said free eye screening was aimed at bringing his eye care program closer to the communities and residents who are suffering from catarata, glaucoma, among others.
Most of the patients are indigents who cannot afford to go hospital due to poverty.
Santos coordinated with Joel Mapiles, provincial information officer, for the free examination, which was held at the latter’s house in Barangay Pasig.

Traders warned on permit deadline

CANDABA — The local government unit (LGU) here warned business owners that it would impose closure order to commercial establishments that fail to secure business permits and pay other necessary local taxes on or before January 20.
Leny Manalo, chief of staff of the Office of the Mayor, asked the members of the local finance in a meeting held Thursday to identify delinquent taxpayers who failed to settle obligations on the said date.
This came as stall owners occupying more than two units in the public market reportedly failed to cooperate with the Municipal Government’s drive to improve its income generating mechanism.
“Kung yung maliliit na nagtitinda ay nagbabayad ng permit bakit sila na malalaki pa ang pwesto sa palengke ay ayaw magbayad?” Manalo said.
The municipality has also intensified the implementation of Business One Stop Shop (Boss) program, which aimed at expediting the procedures on application of business permits and licenses.
Under the program, all offices with direct participation in the processing of the application for renewal of business permits will be housed in one place for the smooth flow of documents and for transparent and speedy transactions.
