For the last ten years, the supermarket chain Trader Joe’s has been selling its Charles Shaw Wines – better known as Two-Buck Chuck – for two bucks. It’s been a great success.
In fact, a recent editions of Trader Joe’s “Fearless Flyer” newspaper says: “We do think we know why these wines have struck a chord – they’ve proven that wine doesn’t need to be expensive to be good, drinkable wine. These are not expensive, they are good, and they’re very drinkable.”
Charles Shaw Wines are made by the Bronco Wine Company based in Ceres, California, near Modesto. The brand in its present form was born just over a decade ago, when Bronco and other producers found themselves harvesting too many grapes. One of the company’s founders, Fred Franzia, came up with the idea to undercut the competition: he’d make a two-dollar bottle. “He was able to kind of go in and name his price, and come up with this ridiculously inexpensive wine. And over time he just had to figure out how to keep supplying it. Not the least of which is, frankly, planting his own vineyards,” says San Francisco Chronicle wine editor Jon Bonne.
Now Bronco owns a lot of land in California – more than 40,000 acres of vineyards – mostly in the San Joaquin Valley. And Charles Shaw wine is just one of more than 90 different Bronco brands, most of which sell for less than ten dollars per bottle.
“Fred [Franzia] is very adamant that no one should pay more than ten dollars for a bottle of wine ever,” says Bonne. “Although, even he has broken that by offering some reserves. But he simply believes in cheap wine.” Cheap wine is not something new for California. In fact, there is a long tradition of making cheap wine that is sold just as table wine, Bonne adds.
But economies have changed, and after ten years and 600 million bottles, how is Two-Buck Chuck still just two bucks? I went to Bronco’s bottling facility to find out.
Charles Shaw Wine is produced in Napa, at an average speed of 245 bottles per minute. Fred Franzia’s son Joe runs this recently built factory. He gave me a tour, and says he’s really proud of how it’s changing the industry.
Franzia says that Bronco was one of the first to pioneer lightweight glass. That’s big. Here is why: a typical case of wine weighs about 36 pounds, while a case of lightweight bottles weighs 30 pounds. Which means Bronco can ship more at a time. “Basically in a truckload of wine, instead of shipping 1200 cases, you are shipping close to 1440 cases. So, basically one in every five trucks is paying for itself, reducing carbon footprint,” says Franzia, adding that it’s a win-win – good for environment and the profit margin. “It’s really starting to become a standard in the industry because the fuel is going up and when you are dealing with products under ten dollar a bottle, you are very sensitive to gas prices affecting your bottle of wine,” he continues.
Another example is cork. Bronco prefers not to use plastic cork for any of its wines. Some have screw caps, known in the industry as “Stelvin closures”. But for Charles Shaw, Bronco uses one of the cheapest forms of natural cork. It’s a mold of small pieces with a real cork veneer at the bottom. “We believe cork to be the primary closure method for wine, so we want to maintain the high quality of cork with a natural tip as a barrier between the composite and a wine itself,” says Franzia.
The San Francisco Chronicle’s Jon Bonne says such production details are important to understand, particularly when it comes to cheap wine: “Quite honestly, the bigger part of the cost is glass, cork, and distribution. It’s one of the reasons that anywhere else outside California, Two-Buck Chuck is actually $3.” Bonne explains that the cost of shipping Two-Buck Chuck anywhere out of California becomes too high to support it. “In terms of the actual wine, the wine is not terribly expensive. I would say, it’s probably 30 to 40 percent of the cost, if that,” Bonne adds.
That means the actual wine inside a bottle of Charles Shaw has a retail value of about $0.75. Bonne says that Bronco is using really cheap grapes that are almost entirely grown in the San Joaquin Valley, where land is cheaper than in Napa or Sonoma. Moreover, he adds that “Fred Franzia, who runs Bronco, is an absolute master of leveraging the bulk wine system to kind of pick up bulk wine where it’s available.”
Which means a bottle of Two Buck Chuck could come from almost anywhere. “This was sort of the genius of it. They made it feel like it was a real bottle of wine. They made it looks like this was a real bottle of wine. And what was in it was sort of incidental. And honestly, no one has much complained,” says Bonne.
While, Joe Franzia believes that’s because his wine tastes good: “You don’t sell on average 5.5 to 6 million cases a year for ten years if you are selling a product that people didn’t enjoy.”
Many people like it, indeed. But of course, not everyone is a huge fan of Two-Buck Chuck. One of the most common complaints that I’ve heard from the Trader Joe’s customers in San Francisco’s SOMA district was the inconsistency of flavor.
For those people of course there are other fairly inexpensive wines with a more consistent flavor, like Bonterra, a wine made by the large California winemaker Fetzer. Bonterra sells for about 12 dollars a bottle – still ten bucks more than Two-Buck Chuck.
Ann Thrupp is manager of sustainability and organic development at Fetzer and Bonterra vineyards. She says that the price point depends on a lot of different factors. According to company literature, Bonterra is the top selling wine made of organic grapes in the U.S. “Many people really love what that means and feel confident of what’s behind it,” Thrupp says.
Bonterra grapes come from sustainably farmed vineyards in Mendocino and Lake Counties. The company practices water and energy conservation, it composts, and even uses sheep instead of tractors to control weeds in the vineyards.
Thrupp says that such practices involve “a little bit more manual labor for doing things like pulling leaves and additional monitoring that goes on for pest management.” And in Mendocino County, that means slightly higher production costs. Other additional costs have to do with certification of organic practices, which involve additional time and labor. And then there is the labor itself.
“In order to do farming for grapes that are that cheap, you need to find labor that is as cheap as you can get,” says Bonne, adding that it’s “not a surprise that most of vineyard work in California is done by migrant workers, often undocumented.”
Fetzer Vineyards offers a program for its workers to learn English. They also reimburse tuition fees and do various in-house trainings. But for less expensive wines “the cheaper your grape farming is, the more you are going to run into the possibility of labor violations,” Bonne says.
Records show at least one public scandal around working conditions at vineyards owned by one of Bronco’s subdivisions, West Coast Grape Farming. In 2008, a pregnant 17-year-old undocumented worker named Maria Isabel Vasquez Jimenez, was working for one of West Coast Grape’s labor contractors. On a hot day, she collapsed on a field and later died of heat exhaustion. Bronco’s spokeswoman Lisa Adams Walters said she could not comment when asked about the labor practices of the company.
So production, quality, land, labor. The other thing determining the cost of wine in California is prestige. I joined wine consultant Fred Daniels in the aisles of the San Francisco Wine Trading Company. I asked him to explain the difference between two bottles of Pinot Noir ¬– one $12 the other $46.
“For something like Poppy, it could be a wine that is very well made, but it’s made from Monterey county so the vineyards don’t have that prestige,” Daniels explains. While the $46 bottle comes from the Russian River Valley. “The wines there are typically run in this price range. If I go to Russian River and buy grapes from that area, the wines automatically will be priced in this price range,” he adds.
None of that applies to brands like Charles Shaw. The label only says the wine comes from California, which is one reason why critics like Bonne say that it almost doesn’t make sense to discuss the quality of such lower shelf bottles that cost less than $15.
“Probably, a great chunk of what you are tasting there could be a grape concentrate: could be sugar, could be a sort of residual flavor from oak products. So, part of what you are doing when you are making wine at that level is simply to come out with something that tastes okay,” Bonne says. Which, for millions of wine drinkers, is good enough.

It was raining as I approached Barsac, the small village at the heart of France’s sweet-winemaking region. Navigating my car along its tiny back roads, I had long since given up on my GPS, which insisted I had “reached my destination,” though I was clearly still far from where I was supposed to be: in the cellars of Château Climens, one of the appellation’s leading properties.
Trusting my instincts, I took a right at the fork, drove over a train track and, with just one call to the château, managed to find my way onto its expansive gravel drive, the rain still pouring.
Château Climens produces around 30,000 bottles of luscious, lemony, honey-colored sweet wine every year. Its 30 hectares of vineyards sit between the château and the A62 motorway that runs all the way to Toulouse. The vineyard’s slight elevation gives the wines an attractive acidity, adding a little finesse.
Since the early 1990s, the estate has been run by Bérénice Lurton, who, with her technical director, Frédéric Nivelle, has established its reputation. The 2011 vintage in Sauternes is good; it comes on heels of the superb 2009 and 2005, and the exceptional 2001.
The reason the 2011 wines are so interesting is the unique weather pattern the growing season experienced. The spring saw temperatures soar above the average. This was followed by hail, which depleted the crop, and a very wet end to the summer. Then came an intense burst of heat at the end of the season.
All this conspired to produce wines that are delightfully fresh on the nose, with huge concentration on the palate. At nearby Château d’Yquem, the wine has a joyous nose, with floral and peach aromas, but it is when sipped that its purity and freshness stand out.
Given that Sauternes is widely regarded as the world’s greatest sweet-wine-producing region, the 2011s should be easy to sell. Not quite. While producers 25 miles northwest in Bordeaux can sell their reds and whites relatively easily, sweet wine is out of fashion.
One hears stories of cellars filled with unsold stock, while Sauternes producers lament that their creations are often referred to as “dessert” wines. They argue that, while their wines are sweet, they can also be drunk with a variety of dishes, from Roquefort salad to Cantonese roast pork. I love to serve them with the first course, as the sweetness naturally lifts the mood of the gathering. But therein lies the problem: however much you like sweet wine, it can really only be drunk in small quantities.
Why not drop the price? Again, the economics of the region aren’t as straightforward as elsewhere. Good Sauternes relies on a unique combination of foggy mornings, a certain amount of humidity and painstaking labor. To reach the optimum amount of concentration and sweetness, the grape varieties used to make the wine—Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle—need to be infected by a fungal growth, Botrytis cinerea, known as noble rot.
But not every bunch is infected uniformly, so pickers have to be diligent in selecting the grapes. Moreover, picking can be painstakingly slow, taking in some cases up to two months, 10 times more than for dry table wine. The risks are high; if the weather turns, the rot can turn as well, becoming gray rot.
While noble rot concentrates the sugars, allowing the water to evaporate and imparting the grapes with an attractive sweetness, gray rot attacks the grapes, leaving them tasting distinctly rotten and ruining at least part of the crop. This all means the production costs of making sweet wine are very high.
Of course, producers could switch to making dry white wine or even red, but by an accident of geography and climate, Sauternes is one of the few areas in which conditions are more or less perfect for the production of that distinctive rich, nutty sweetness.
Which leaves the Sauternes producers praying for a change in fashion, back to a time, more than a century ago, when their wine was among the most sought-after in the world. Whether this happens remains to be seen.

From a Napa-based legislative movement founded 22 years ago, to a national wine industry networking organization, Women for WineSense has come a long way.
“Women for WineSense believes that wine enhances and enriches everyday life,” national president Rebecca Moore said, quoting from the organization’s mission statement.
WWS provides “women and men with unbiased information about the cultural heritage, social and health effects of moderate wine consumption as part of a healthy lifestyle,” according to the mission statement. It offers educational programs and networking opportunities to wine industry professionals and enthusiasts throughout America.
“We are an organization open to men and women, but we are primarily about the advancement of women within the industry,” Moore said.
The 2012 Grand Event, WWS’s semi-annual national conference, was held May 4-6 in Napa Valley. The event included an evening reception at Oakville’s Robert Mondavi Winery, private winery tours and tastings, and a series of educational seminars at the Culinary Institute of America, Greystone campus, along with an awards presentation and silent auction.
The seminars ranged from wine and food pairing tips with Master Sommelier Andrea Immer Robinson, to a discussion and tasting of different California chardonnay styles, to an introduction to Sonoma County artisanal cheeses, among many other topics.
“I want people to know that we are an incredibly dynamic, open organization with something for everyone,” Moore said. “You can be a wine enthusiast just looking to be more knowledgeable, or someone looking to get into the industry, or someone in the industry who wants to switch careers; there’s an endless array of educational opportunities that you can avail yourself of through the organization.”
WWS was founded in 1990 in opposition to the Mothers Against Drunk Driving organization’s campaign to have wine classified alongside hard liquor. The founders were Julie Johnson of Tres Sabores Winery, Michaela Rodeno of Villa Ragazzi/Rodeno Vineyards, Margrit Mondavi of Robert Mondavi Winery and Margaret Duckhorn of Duckhorn Vineyards.
“They were teaching in the schools that alcohol in general was bad and the kids were coming home to households that had wine on the table and saying, ‘Mommy, why are you poisoning Daddy?’,” Moore said.
The cultural element of wine was missing from the equation, Moore said, which particularly irked Johnson and her peers, who thought that awareness needed to be raised.
“Wine is a sustaining agriculture and an economic driver for so many parts of the United States that it’s not fair to just look at them in the microcosm of ‘You produce alcohol, therefore you’re bad,’” she said.
“Unfortunately, that’s what was coming out of MADD at the time, and there needed to be some common sense thrown into the mix. That’s how we originated,” Moore said.
The battle to keep wine producers separated from hard liquor producers took nearly three years, but in the end WWS prevailed.
Afterward, the women had to decide what to do with the organization.
“It brought the wine industry here closer together and gave them a unified movement,” Moore said. “The women didn’t want to disband and it gradually morphed into an organization about education … and the promotion of women within the wine industry.
“Thirty to 40 years ago, women winemakers were almost unheard of — the glass ceiling was firmly in place and women like our founders were really blazing trails,” she added.
One of her goals for the remainder of her presidency, Moore said, is to continue expanding WWS’s membership, particularly with men.
“I think that we could do a better job of getting the not-so-fair sex involved, persuading them to be more supportive, because, for better or worse, there is still more visibility granted to organizations that are male-dominated,” Moore said.
The organization has more than 800 members in 12 chapters across the country. Moore’s goal is to have 1,000 members by year’s end.

Source: White Heron Cellars Quincy, Wash.—A new AVA (American Viticultural Area) is in the works for Washington state, and wineries are counting on the designation to deepen consumers’ understanding of what the diverse Columbia Valley has to offer. The proposed Ancient Lakes of Columbia Valley AVA would include 162,762 acres at the eastern foot of the Cascade Mountains located in Douglas, Grant and Kittitas counties. Currently part of the Columbia Valley AVA, the proposed appellation is home to six wineries and six vineyards totalling 1,399 acres. The name of the AVA refers to a series of water-filled depressions situated along the eastern edge of the Quincy Basin and left over from the glacial floods that swept through central Washington in prehistoric times. Cameron Fries, proprietor of White Heron Cellars in Quincy, Wash., and Joan Davenport, a soil sciences professor with Washington State University in Prosser, said the name “Quincy Basin” wasn’t suitable on account of a Quincy designation in France’s Loire Valley. The new name connects with the local identity the AVA aims to create for the region. “You want to differentiate yourself out of the Columbia Valley,” he told Wines & Vines. “The Columbia Valley is just a huge AVA, so you want some way to say our grapes are not just generic from Lake Roosevelt all the way to the Columbia Gorge.” More acid and tannin Fries said distinguishing traits of the region from his perspective are rooted in a cool climate that yields grapes that are higher in both acid and tannin than those from warmer parts of the state. The vines for White Heron Cellars are located at between 900 and 1,200 feet in elevation, with the maximum elevation in the AVA being approximately 1,400 feet. While not incredibly high, the area’s location at the eastern foot of the Cascades exposes it to cool air from the mountains that collects in the Quincy Basin. “Cold air comes down every night, no matter how warm it gets,” he said. This ensures vines stay dormant during the winter and moderates the climate during the growing season. Growing degree day units (GDD) average 2,570, and continuous GDD number 162. While the conditions make the area less than ideal for some of the state’s big red varieties, white grapes seem to love it. “It seems to be the thing that works,” said Butch Milbrandt, co-owner of Milbrandt Vineyards, one of the AVA’s largest growers. “The area does a good enough job of raising white grapes that it deserves an appellation.” The petition was published May 8, 2012, although it had been originally submitted last year (see “Washington State Hopes for More AVAs.”) The comment period ends July 9, with approval possible later this year. Support for the appellation, which would be the 14th in the state, has come from the federal and state representatives, the Port of Quincy and the commissioners of Grant County, which has its seat in Quincy. The Port of Quincy funded work by Washington State University soil sciences professor Joan Davenport that strengthened the petition. (TTB staff rejected a previous version of the petition, due in part to the quality of the climate information provided.) Mineral-rich soils Approval of the petition will give Washington state wineries another means of distinguishing their wines, something winemaker Brennon Leighton of Efeste winery in Woodinville welcomes. Efeste sources grapes from the Evergreen Vineyard on the southern side of the AVA for its Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Chardonnay wines. They’re single-vineyard wines, and Leighton says the local climate, elevation and shallow, mineral-rich caliche soils distinguish the grapes from what’s being produced elsewhere in the state. Being able to put a name to the region will help both wineries and consumers understand what’s in the bottle, he said. “It’s a completely distinct area from the rest of Washington state or the Columbia Valley, in the sense that it’s a higher elevation, very cool site with a really interesting profile in the wines,” Leighton said. “Until we can start really giving sites distinction, the consumer’s not going to understand and be able to put value on things.” He points to the value AVA designations have had in elevating the profile of wines from Walla Walla and Red Mountain, two of the state’s best-known appellations. While wines from these AVAs have an admirable record of awards, the AVAs themselves have become signifiers of premium wines for consumers. Leighton believes an AVA designation for the Ancient Lakes region add value to local wines by giving consumers a name to mention when they’re looking for the region’s well-known wines. Without the identity a name confers, consumers can’t name what they’re looking for or confer value on it as something special. “I’m not saying that Evergreen will be considered the most valuable place in Washington state, but it does give us an opportunity to get value,” he said.
