UPLB student to be laid to rest

MANILA, Philippines – Ray Bernard Peñaranda, the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) student who was stabbed to death last week, will finally be laid to rest on Sunday.
Peñaranda’s remains will be brought from his residence in Barangay Sampaloc to Saint Jude Thaddeus Parish for the last mass.
After the last liturgical service, Peñaranda will be brought to Haven of Rest Memorial Park in Manila East Road in Tanay.
Students, professors and UPLB officials are expected to attend the funeral.
Narciso “Tres” Panganiban of UPLB Student Council also said UPLB Chancellor Rex Victor Cruz will also be there.
The Peñaranda family, on the other hand, said they have already accepted what happened but they will never stop seeking justice for Ray.
The family, however, is glad that all the suspects are now under police custody.

Prosecution doubts Corona will testify

MANILA — The House prosecution panel said Sunday that Chief Justice Renato Corona is not likely to speak up on the witness stand, despite going on a media blitz last week to proclaim his innocence.
Corona has been appearing in television and radio interviews to insist that the impeachment complaint is rooted in the Supreme Court decision to distribute land in Hacienda Luisita, owned by President Benigno Aquino III’s relatives, to tenant farmers.
He also accused Senator Teofisto Guingona III of trying to convince him to go into early retirement so Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio could be appointed in his place.
Guingona has denied this. He confirmed, however, that he had lunch with Corona last year.
Corona also said the closure of three peso time deposit accounts at Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank) on the same day he was impeached was a coincidence. He said loss of confidence in the bank prompted him to close down the accounts.
“We guess the Chief Justice is making all these noise so he can shift to a mute mode when the trial resumes. His tack is to seek an acquittal through media interviews,” Marikina Representative Romero Quimbo, prosecution spokesman, said Sunday.
Corona said he is willing to testify but that the decision is up to his lawyers.
“If the Chief Justice wants to tell the truth, then his place should be on the witness stand, not in the radio booth. The latter is where DJs spin music, not where a CJ can spin his version of events,” Aurora Representative Juan Edgardo Angara, another prosecution spokesman, said.
“He has a mouthful to say on supposed meetings and pressures for him to quit but on the most important issue of his undeclared and unexplained wealth, his lips are sealed,” Deputy Speaker Lorenzo Tañada III said.
Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile, who has called on the Chief Justice to testify to clear his name, assured Corona that he will be treated with respect during the trial.
“The Chief Justice is head of an equal branch of government and should be respected, not disrespected. (If you do) it is like you disrespect your own country, your own Constitution. Until he (Corona) is pronounced guilty he is presumed innocent,” Enrile, presiding officer of the impeachment court, said in a radio interview over dzBB.
He said anyone who disrespects Corona will be ruled out of order and that he will stand by that ruling.
“They can remove me if they want,” he said, adding he would resign if Corona is not shown respect.
Senators will also be disallowed from cross-examining the Chief Justice. He said although senators are allowed to ask clarificatory questions, “(Senators) would be partisan if they cross-examine.”
Enrile said the cross-examination of witnesses for the defense should be left to the prosecution panel.
“We respect his right to explain to the public, but that is not evidence for us unless presented before the impeachment court,” Enrile said.
Corona earlier said he will open his bank accounts to the court. His wife, Cristina, is expected to testify on their bank accounts.

BSP exec points to PSBank on leak

MANILA, Philippines – An anti-money laundering specialist of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) pointed to Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank) officials as the ones who could have possibly leaked the signature cards of Chief Justice Renato Corona, which led to the disclosure of his multimillion-peso accounts in the impeachment court.
“From the start, I have been consistent that I neither requested nor received a copy of the signature card pertaining to the account of the Chief Justice,” Jerry Leal reiterated in his 21-page letter-affidavit explaining why he should not be cited in contempt by the Senate sitting as an impeachment court.
Leal said it was not established that he had a copy of the signature card of the Chief Justice or “that I have accessed such deposit account information.”
He slammed the testimonies of PSBank president Pascual Garcia III that he said were based on hearsay, “since he does not have personal knowledge on the issue and his allegations are bare, not being supported by documentary proof.”
Leal added that PSBank Katipunan branch manager Annabelle Tiongson and head of internal audit Emma Co, being officers of the bank, also lacked credibility since their testimonies were hearsay.
“Nobody can dispute that they naturally would not want their bank to be, one way or another, put in a bad light,” he said, noting that Tiongson showed uncertainty when asked who personally tagged the Chief Justice as a politically exposed person (PEP).
Leal added that Garcia’s statements were “unreliable, being generic, vague and inconsistent.”
He said it was also Garcia who insisted that the alleged bank signature card of the Chief Justice was “spurious or fake.”

BSP exec points to PSBank on leak

MANILA, Philippines – An anti-money laundering specialist of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) pointed to Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank) officials as the ones who could have possibly leaked the signature cards of Chief Justice Renato Corona, which led to the disclosure of his multimillion-peso accounts in the impeachment court.
“From the start, I have been consistent that I neither requested nor received a copy of the signature card pertaining to the account of the Chief Justice,” Jerry Leal reiterated in his 21-page letter-affidavit explaining why he should not be cited in contempt by the Senate sitting as an impeachment court.
Leal said it was not established that he had a copy of the signature card of the Chief Justice or “that I have accessed such deposit account information.”
He slammed the testimonies of PSBank president Pascual Garcia III that he said were based on hearsay, “since he does not have personal knowledge on the issue and his allegations are bare, not being supported by documentary proof.”
Leal added that PSBank Katipunan branch manager Annabelle Tiongson and head of internal audit Emma Co, being officers of the bank, also lacked credibility since their testimonies were hearsay.
“Nobody can dispute that they naturally would not want their bank to be, one way or another, put in a bad light,” he said, noting that Tiongson showed uncertainty when asked who personally tagged the Chief Justice as a politically exposed person (PEP).
Leal added that Garcia’s statements were “unreliable, being generic, vague and inconsistent.”
He said it was also Garcia who insisted that the alleged bank signature card of the Chief Justice was “spurious or fake.”

Manila, Philippines – ABS-CBN‘s “TV Patrol” is now celebrating its 25 years in local TV, which is also now the longest-running Filipino primetime TV newscast in the country.
As noted by ABS-CBN on Monday, March 05, 2012, the “TV Patrol” 25th anniversary celebration started that day by unveiling a commemorative marker in Barangay Nabuclod, Floridablanca, Pampanga.
According to the report, ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs head Regina “Ging” Reyes said that the town was chosen for the historic marker since the place became their headquarters back in 1991 when Mt. Pinatuboerupted on June that year.
Meanwhile, current TV Patrol anchors Noli de Castro, Ted Failon and Korina Sanchez were among who joined past and present members of TV Patrol that day during the unveiling rites in Pampanga.
Based on ABS-CBN history, TV Patrol had its first airing on March 2, 1987 and featured anchors “Kabayan” Noli de Castro, Mel Tiangco and Robert Arevalo, who was later replaced by Frankie Evangelista.
Ted Failon temporarily replaced Frankie Evangelista in 1992, and Korina Sanchez in 1995 replaced Mel Tiangco, who transferred to GMA Network; while Noli de Castro left the show in 2001 to run for senator and eventually became the Vice President under the Arroyo administration.
Korina Sanchez left TV Patrol in November 2004 and had other shows in ABS-CBN, with the show having lot of changes in its format throughout the years along with the introduction of other anchors including Karen Davilaand Julius Babao.
Back in November 2010, Korina Sanchez and Noli de Castro returned to the show and joined Ted Failon, whileDavila and Babao were transferred to the network’s late night news program, “Bandila” to join Ces Drilon as anchors.
Meanwhile, special online and on-ground activities will also be held this Monday to celebrate TV Patrol’s 25thanniversary, along with its special anniversary broadcast at 6:30 p.m. (local time) at ABS-CBN.

Road Trip to Pampanga: Day One

It’s been a while since me and my friends have gone on a road trip. This year, we decided to change all of that. When we heard about the annual hot air balloon festival happening in Pampanga last weekend, we decided to make that our first of many road trip adventures for the year.
We finally made it to Angeles, Pampanga around 3 in the afternoon. Even though it’s classified to be a provincial city, driving through the streets of Angeles reminded me so much of some areas in Manila with a seemingly organized chaos of people crossing, two-lane streets transforming into four lanes in an instant, and a throng of fast food chains lining either side of the streets.
Our first agenda after arriving to our road trip destination was to find our hotel to put down our things and rest for a bit before we go around Clark Freeport Zone where the hot air balloon festival was taking place. We called the hotel to ask for directions, and found it with no problem at all.

Since we were in Pampanga, I figured the best place to head over for dinner was at the Everybody’s Cafe. It’s been a highly recommended restaurant to try while visiting Pampanga if you really want to sample the local fare. But that was not the only reason why the Everybody’s Cafe came to my mind. Brian had often remarked to me that he would eat anything that is served in front of him, so I decided to see if he’s really a man of his word.
The only problem was, we were in Angeles and the Everybody’s Cafe branch that I know was located in San Fernando, another major city in Pampanga. Given that we needed to sleep really early that night to make it to the hot air balloon festival the following day, I figured the traveling all that way for dinner isn’t really that practical.
Nevertheless, I decided to still call them to see just how far it was from where we were at. When I spoke to one of the staff members and told them that we were coming from Angeles, he suggested to me to head over to their branch right in the main city proper. That would definitely work for us. Told my friends about it, and got the consensus to head there for dinner, and it turned out to be a great way to end day one of our road trip to Pampanga.

PAGASA: Brace for 36-degree Celsius summer days in Metro Manila

After experiencing a 34.5-degree Celsius weather twice this month, Metro Manila might face even hotter days as state weather forecasters over the weekend warned temperatures in the National Capital Region could reach 36 degrees Celsius.

Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said temperatures in other areas may even reach 37 degrees.

In its 5 a.m. Saturday bulletin, PAGASA said Eastern Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms.

The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening, it added.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Extreme Northern Luzon and coming from the east to northeast over the rest of the country.

The coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be moderate to rough, it added.
