Manila, Philippines – ABS-CBN‘s “TV Patrol” is now celebrating its 25 years in local TV, which is also now the longest-running Filipino primetime TV newscast in the country.
As noted by ABS-CBN on Monday, March 05, 2012, the “TV Patrol” 25th anniversary celebration started that day by unveiling a commemorative marker in Barangay Nabuclod, Floridablanca, Pampanga.
According to the report, ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs head Regina “Ging” Reyes said that the town was chosen for the historic marker since the place became their headquarters back in 1991 when Mt. Pinatuboerupted on June that year.
Meanwhile, current TV Patrol anchors Noli de Castro, Ted Failon and Korina Sanchez were among who joined past and present members of TV Patrol that day during the unveiling rites in Pampanga.
Based on ABS-CBN history, TV Patrol had its first airing on March 2, 1987 and featured anchors “Kabayan” Noli de Castro, Mel Tiangco and Robert Arevalo, who was later replaced by Frankie Evangelista.
Ted Failon temporarily replaced Frankie Evangelista in 1992, and Korina Sanchez in 1995 replaced Mel Tiangco, who transferred to GMA Network; while Noli de Castro left the show in 2001 to run for senator and eventually became the Vice President under the Arroyo administration.
Korina Sanchez left TV Patrol in November 2004 and had other shows in ABS-CBN, with the show having lot of changes in its format throughout the years along with the introduction of other anchors including Karen Davilaand Julius Babao.
Back in November 2010, Korina Sanchez and Noli de Castro returned to the show and joined Ted Failon, whileDavila and Babao were transferred to the network’s late night news program, “Bandila” to join Ces Drilon as anchors.
Meanwhile, special online and on-ground activities will also be held this Monday to celebrate TV Patrol’s 25thanniversary, along with its special anniversary broadcast at 6:30 p.m. (local time) at ABS-CBN.

Road Trip to Pampanga: Day One

It’s been a while since me and my friends have gone on a road trip. This year, we decided to change all of that. When we heard about the annual hot air balloon festival happening in Pampanga last weekend, we decided to make that our first of many road trip adventures for the year.
We finally made it to Angeles, Pampanga around 3 in the afternoon. Even though it’s classified to be a provincial city, driving through the streets of Angeles reminded me so much of some areas in Manila with a seemingly organized chaos of people crossing, two-lane streets transforming into four lanes in an instant, and a throng of fast food chains lining either side of the streets.
Our first agenda after arriving to our road trip destination was to find our hotel to put down our things and rest for a bit before we go around Clark Freeport Zone where the hot air balloon festival was taking place. We called the hotel to ask for directions, and found it with no problem at all.

Since we were in Pampanga, I figured the best place to head over for dinner was at the Everybody’s Cafe. It’s been a highly recommended restaurant to try while visiting Pampanga if you really want to sample the local fare. But that was not the only reason why the Everybody’s Cafe came to my mind. Brian had often remarked to me that he would eat anything that is served in front of him, so I decided to see if he’s really a man of his word.
The only problem was, we were in Angeles and the Everybody’s Cafe branch that I know was located in San Fernando, another major city in Pampanga. Given that we needed to sleep really early that night to make it to the hot air balloon festival the following day, I figured the traveling all that way for dinner isn’t really that practical.
Nevertheless, I decided to still call them to see just how far it was from where we were at. When I spoke to one of the staff members and told them that we were coming from Angeles, he suggested to me to head over to their branch right in the main city proper. That would definitely work for us. Told my friends about it, and got the consensus to head there for dinner, and it turned out to be a great way to end day one of our road trip to Pampanga.

PAGASA: Brace for 36-degree Celsius summer days in Metro Manila

After experiencing a 34.5-degree Celsius weather twice this month, Metro Manila might face even hotter days as state weather forecasters over the weekend warned temperatures in the National Capital Region could reach 36 degrees Celsius.

Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said temperatures in other areas may even reach 37 degrees.

“In Metro Manila, we can expect temperatures to reach 35 to 36 degrees,” Aurelio said in an interview on dzBB radio, adding that weather in areas such as Tuguegarao in Cagayan province may even reach 37 degrees – roughly the same as that of the human body.

On at least two occasions this month, Metro Manila residents sweltered through 34.5-degree heat, the highest so far this year.

Last Thursday, PAGASA recorded a high of 34.5 degrees Celsius in the NCR, the highest temperature so far this year.

Thursday’s 34.5-degree temperature matched the 34.5 degrees Celsius recorded last March 3.

Meanwhile, rain looms over Eastern Visayas and Mindanao due to the easterlies, or winds from the east.

In its 5 a.m. Saturday bulletin, PAGASA said Eastern Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms.

The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening, it added.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Extreme Northern Luzon and coming from the east to northeast over the rest of the country.

The coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be moderate to rough, it added.

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III has no regrets in meeting with impeached Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona shortly after he assumed office in 2010, Malacanang said Friday.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte made the reaction as Corona disclosed the private meeting days before the defense team’s turn to present evidence and witnesses at the Senate impeachment court.
“I was part of that meeting with the President yesterday when we discussed this particular issue and I did not get that sense that the President had any regrets because the President was very categorical in saying that ‘it was incumbent upon me to ensure that we had a good working relationship given that the four pillars of the reform agenda include judicial reform. And the Chief Justice being the head of the judiciary is a necessary partner in implementing that judicial reform,'” Valte said in a news briefing.
Corona has revealed that Aquino sought a meeting with him sometime in June or July 2010, when they talked about the creation of the Truth Commission.
But Malacañang denied that the issue was discussed, saying the President merely talked on the judicial reform.
Valte also said the President did not divulge to the public his meeting with Corona because he did not want to put color on it.
“It’s not the President’s habit to trumpet everything that he does…that are just not announced because the President believed that such setting would be more constructive, instead of putting color or given attention. Not everything that the President does needs to be trotted out,” she said.
She added the President even described the ending of the meeting a “very pleasant.”
Valte also said that it was not unusual for the heads of the different branches of government to talk with each other.
“It’s not unusual for heads of the separate and co-equal branches of government to have discussions like this particular one,” she said.
Valte also said that Corona, who claimed to have threats on his life, could augment his security if he sees fit.
“We have no problem and we do not think that anybody would begrudge the Chief Justice if he wants to add to his security. And that is perfectly within his right to do so,” she said.

7-year old girl raped, killed in Manila

MANILA, Philippines – Two pedicab drivers were arrested for raping and killing a 7-year old girl in Sta. Mesa, Manila
Cecilio Bacolo, 19, and Roderick Soliveres, 28, are now detained at the Manila Police District.

dzMM’s Johnson Manabat reported that Bacolo knew the girl because he was renting a room in the victim’s house.

“Doon po ako nakatira sa kanila ng mga tatlong buwan. Nangungupahan,” said Bacolo in an interview with dzMM.

Bacolo said he was drinking outside the victim’s house around 8 a.m. Friday when Soliveres came by and inquired about the girl.

Soliveres returned around 9 a.m. and told him to call the girl. He enticed the girl to go with them by giving her bread.

“Sa sobrang kalasingan parang inakit niya ako. Sabi niya tawagin mo naman yung bata,” Bacolo said.

They then brought the victim to the rented room of Soliveres’ friend along Pat Antonio Street in Barangay 602 in Bacood, Sta. Mesa where they took turns raping the girl.

“Pinauwi na ako wala po akong alam na pinatay na pala niya yung bata,” said Bacolo.

A nylon cord was found around the victim’s neck.

Tenants on the second floor said they noticed a man and a girl enter the house around 8 or 9 a.m. on Friday.

“Naliligo ako nang may dumaan ng lalaki na may tangay-tangay na bata. Tuloy-tuloy na siyang umakyat pero yung bata hindi naman umiiyak. Sumusunod lang sa kanya,” said “Riza”, one of the witnesses.

After about two hours, Riza said the man went down and left the house without the girl.

Government hopes to evade FATF blacklisting

MALACAÑANG said Friday the Philippines could still evade its inclusion on the blacklist of the Europe-based Financial Action Task Force (FATF) if Congress could press the passage of necessary legislatures that the inter-governmental agency required of the country.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte, in a news briefing, said that concerned Cabinet officials, including Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr., have conveyed to both Houses of Congress the necessity to pass the bills.
These include the amendments on the Anti-Money Laundering Act and the Terrorist Financing Suppression bill, which are both pending in Congress.
“We made a step on that, that’s why Executive Secretary Ochoa sent a letter to Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile. And we’re hoping that those two bills will be passed in time for the deadline,” Valte said.
The Philippines, which has been on the “dark grey list” of the FATF, could be included in the blacklist if the government fails to come up with the laws to address the “dirty money” issue.
The FATF will hold the plenary meeting in June this year, thus, Congress has to pass the two measures prior to this.
Once blacklisted, the Philippines will be subject to financial sanctions which could delay remittances, higher bank transaction costs and increased scrutiny of the Philippine-based dealings.

Budol-Budol Gang strikes in Sta. Ana

STA. ANA — Stall owners along the Jose Abad Santos Avenue in the portion of Barangay San Bartolome this town have allegedly fallen prey to members of the dreaded “Budol-Budol Gang” Tuesday.
Pepito Guiao, a businessman, said a group of three men, posing as legitimate traders, have been peddling items like soaps and shampoos to stall owners at low prices.
Guiao said some of them bought the items, as their prices are almost 40 percent lower than those found in the market.
Yung mga shampoo na naka-container na plastic, karaniwang nabibili ng P120 sa supermarket ay ibinebenta lamang nila ng P70, Guaio said.
However, they discovered too late that the items they bought were either fake or diluted.
Ayaw bumula nung sabon nila. Yung shamboo parang may halong tubig. Sayang, ang dami pa naman naming nabili. Pati mga mananahi ko ay bumili rin, Guiao added.
As this developed, owners of small businesses here have warned the public about the presence of the alleged members of the Budol-Budol Gang in the locality.
The public must be informed about this so that there will no more additional victims. At kung maka-encounter sila ng ganito ay isumbong agad sa pulis, he said. (Herbert P. Mapiles)
