PORAC town will be hosting its 8th Binulu Festival on November 15, with various barangays bringing their best Binulu recipe for a competition.
Mayor Condralito Dela Cruz said the cook-fest aims to promote the indigenous cooking process and place the town in the tourism radar as food and eco-tourism destination.
Dela Cruz said what most people thought of as a jungle survival technique is in fact a traditional cooking process still practiced by Aeta folk of the town’s mountain villages.
The “Binulu Festival,” which started in 2005, highlights the cooking of rice and other foodstuffs using a variety of bamboo called “bulu,” which can be used to cook rice and usual dish of soured chicken broth that is seasoned with salt and other local herbs.
The organizers first started with simple demonstrations of how the process of cooking with bulu was done.
The Aetas of Zambales taught the art to military personnel and tourists as a jungle survival technique.
The local government aims to popularize the cooking tradition as a highlight of the food attraction of the town and as part of the over-all eco-tourism attraction for Porac town.
Porac is currently being eyed as the next best eco-tourism destination in Pampanga.
It could be remembered that in 2011, top government officials led 56 individuals in exploring a new 22-kilometer route that gives Pampanga an access to the famous Mt. Pinatubo crater.
Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (2nd District) and Governor Lilia Pineda led the opening of a new route to Miyamit Falls, Mt. Pinatubo, and the Porac Highlands. The new route is a dirt road that spans across Barangays Sapang Uwak, Villa Maria, and Inararo.

The road ends along a camping site on top of a hill that provides a view of Zambales and Tarlac. Mt. Pinatubo would only be a two-hour hike from the drop-off point.
Currently, people wanting to see the crater would take the Capas, Tarlac route via Barangay Patling.
The route, which has been developed by the Municipal Government of Porac, will become an alternative route for eco-tourism enthusiasts and hikers who would like to see the Mt. Pinatubo Crater Lake.

SOME P42.5 M worth of rice smuggled into the country has been seized by the Bureau of Customs at the Port of Subic.
This was revealed by Customs Commissioner Ruffy Biazon a couple of days or so before the State of the Nation Address of President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
Biazon said the rice shipment came from Vietnam in 90 container vans, 50 of which arrived on June 13, 2012 and 40 on June 20 or a week later, purposely misdeclared as construction materials.
“This is a large-scale attempt to smuggle rice into the country by misdeclaring the illegal shipment of rice. Had it not been for our alert customs operatives, this could have affected the livelihood of many of our local farmers.
We will vigorously pursue charges against those involved in this attempt,” Biazon said.Biazon said the improved monitoring of shipments entering the country’s seaports and airports resulted to the seizure of the rice shipment which was consigned to Masagana Import Export Inc. and Oriental Tradelink Express, Inc.
He added that the Bureau of Customs is also set to formalize the seizure of a bigger rice shipment, about 10 times over, which arrived in Subic sometime in April.

SM Prime said the growth is largely due to rentals from new Philippine malls opened in 2010 and 2011, same store sales of 8 percent, and the improved performance of its China malls.
Similarly, SM Prime posted a 16 percent increase in net income to P2.48 billion for the third quarter of 2011, from P2.14 billion during the same period last year.
Revenues from July to September this year reached P7.52 billion, for a 15 percent increase, year-on-year. EBITDA for the three months stood at P4.89 billion, for an increase of 13 percent and an EBITDA margin of 65 percent.
“Our performance for the first nine months of 2012 gives us confidence in reaching our full-year target,” said SM Prime president Hans T. Sy.
He added that “we think that consumer sentiment will remain positive on the back of a strong domestic economy. Moreover, we anticipate this trend to continue as we approach the holiday season, when consumer spending is particularly strong.”
Operating expenses during the first nine months of 2012 increased by 14 percent to P10.45 billion from P9.12 billion in 2011 due to increase in administrative expenses, particularly, utilities and manpower expenses, business taxes, and film rentals.
Income from operations increased to P11.65 billion, up 15 percent from P10.14 billion.
In terms of gross revenues, the four malls in China contributed P1.90 billion in 2012 and P1.49 billion in 2011, or 9 percent and 8 percent of total consolidated revenues, respectively.
Gross revenues of the four malls in China increased by 27 percent in 2012 compared to the same period in 2011 due to improvements in the average occupancy level, lease renewals, and the opening of SM Xiamen Lifestyle and SM Suzhou which added 182,000 square meters of gross floor area. The average occupancy rate for the four malls in China is now at 96 percent.

MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Tuesday announced the lifting of the number coding scheme or the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP) for authorized public utility provincial buses plying roads in the metropolis on October 30 and 31.
In lifting the number coding scheme, MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino had taken into consideration the expected increase in the number of commuters traveling to the provinces to pay respects to their dearly departed on All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day on Nov. 1 and 2.
He said that by suspending such scheme, there would be enough public utility buses to serve the riding public.
The decision was also brought about by the ongoing major road and bridge repair works being undertaken by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in various locations in the provinces of Quezon in Region 4-A and Nueva Vizcaya in Region 3, which causes prolonged travel time of buses to and from Metro Manila.
Tolentino said that the suspension of the UVVRP for provincial buses was part of MMDA’s contingency plans for the forthcoming “Undas”.
However, the UVVRP will continue to be implemented for private vehicles and other public utility vehicles.
“The public is assured that the MMDA shall strictly monitor and supervise traffic flow particularly in identified choke points to ensure the unhampered mobility of vehicles and pedestrians during Undas,” Tolentino said in a statement.
Tolentino further requests the public to cooperate with the MMDA and other government authorities to guarantee a solemn, meaningful, peaceful, and orderly commemoration of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.

SINCE we are now at the time of the year when we visit the final resting places of our departed loved ones and honor them, let me “blend” in with my observations of some cemeteries.
Year after year, during the first day of November, many Christians encounter problems of missing tombs and sometimes, missing loved ones. Others meanwhile go to cemeteries only to see that their fences or steel roofs are missing.
In the Philippines, there are the Catholic cemeteries, which are usually under the jurisdiction of the parish church where it belongs. These are often houses, old pantheons or buildings containing tombs or memorials of the dead.
Some of these Catholic cemeteries date back to the later Spanish period and have survived calamities and war. Some of them have mini-chapels made of adobe stones and bricks. Adobe stones and bricks are not spared from looters.
I have visited an old Catholic cemetery in one of the towns of Pampanga and saw how its mini-chapel was looted of its adobe stones, making some portions of its wall collapse. I surmise that those who are fond of old things and antiques acquired these adobe stones and put them in their gardens. Bricks were not also spared as these can be re-used for aesthetics and architectural designs.
In some towns, there are municipal or public cemeteries which house tombs that are disarranged. Some of the living bury their dead underground or above-ground tombs indiscriminately. Even in cemeteries, pointing fingers (to claim a portion of the cemetery) is extant.
There are miners in some public cemeteries who say that a piece of land “is mine”. The result is a disarray of tombs and tombstones.
In both cemeteries, there are incidents of missing tombs. This is probably the result of the “mining” of some, where they destroy tombs and claim a piece of the earth where a missing tomb used to be.
Some tombs on the other hand are empty. This is because cadavers are now likewise stolen by some who are said to sell the same to medical schools.
These looters of the dead have thick linings in their stomach, much like their thick faces. Their act of desecrating cadavers is now happening in some localities especially in remote places. Surely, medical students will benefit from these bones and everything that’s left, but it does not justify their vile acts.
In places where there are many junkshops, chances are that there are looters locally known as “kalakal boys”. Many fences of tombs and steel roofs of mausoleums are stolen only to end up in junkshops sold per kilo. While these “kalakal boys” directly benefit from their burglary, it’s still a commission of theft or robbery as the case may be.
I once saw, before All Saints’ Day of the previous year, a family who visited their loved ones enshrined at a medium-sized mausoleum. The steel roof of their structure was missing. Members of the family were disgusted and cannot help but blame the cemetery caretaker.
It seems nowadays that it’s not only the funeral parlors who make a living out of the dead but also looters and scavengers who profit from things in cemeteries. There are a number of instances where these havens of the dead are ransacked and desecrated by some who make a living too out of the dead.
Many years ago, I’ve heard a story wherein the gold-plated teeth of a cadaver were stolen only a few days after the dead has been interred. This ghastly act of thievery can only be perpetrated by people with evil minds. They make a living out of the dead.
