MANILA — Two leading airlines in the country cancelled some of their flights Sunday due to bad weather brought by Tropical Storm Gener, television reports said.
Cebu Pacific cancelled six of its flights to and from Caticlan and two others bound for San Jose and back.
Airphil Express, on the other hand, did not allow its planes also bound for Caticlan and back to take off Sunday.
The bad weather, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), was caused by Tropical Storm Gener, which slightly intensified as it moves closer to extreme Northern Luzon on Sunday.
Public storm warning signals have been raised over several areas in Northern Luzon. Under signal number 2 are Cagayan, Calayan Group of Islands and Babuyan Group of Islands, while those in signal number 1 are the provinces of Isabela, Kalinga, Apayao, and Batanes.
Pagasa said Gener will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon, which will bring rains over Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The tropical storm is forecast to be out of the country by Tuesday or Wednesday. (Sunnex)

MANILA (Updated 4:50 p.m.) — Residents in Northern Luzon currently on the path of Tropical Storm Gener (international codename: Saola) have been advised to heed the warnings of local
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said all concerned government units have already been alerted in case of any eventuality.
Seven areas have been placed under public storm alert by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) as of Sunday morning.
Signal number 2 has been hoisted over Cagayan, Calayan Group of Islands and Babuyan Group of Islands, while signal number 1 has been raised in Isabela, Kalinga, Apayao and Batanes Group of Islands.
Valte said the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is on alert for road clearing, while the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has prepositioned relief goods and set up evacuation centers.
The Department of Health has also prepositioned medicines to augment the supply of hospitals in case needed.
“The Office of Secretary (Ricky) Carandang and the PCDSPO are coming up with the identification of evacuation centers so that the public may be rightly guided in times of calamities,” Valte said.
Pagasa warned residents who are living in low-lying and mountainous areas under public storm warning signals against possible flashfloods and landslides.
The weather bureau likewise alerted those living in coastal areas under public storm warning signal number 2 against big waves or storm surges generated by Gener.
Pagasa earlier said Gener may generate 10 to 25 millimeters per hour of rainfall (heavy to intense) within its 600-kilometer diameter.
The tropical storm will also enhance the southwest monsoon that will bring rain over Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao especially the western section, it added.
As of 10 a.m. Sunday, Tropical Storm Gener was estimated at 310 kilometers east northeast of Casiguran, Aurora, with maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour (kph) near center and gustiness of up to 100 kph.
Gener is not likely to make landfall and may instead head for Taiwan, said Pagasa. It is expected to leave the Philippines on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Following continuous rain, the Pagasa warned residents near La Mesa Dam in Quezon City to be on alert as the dam’s water level neared the spilling level.
“As of 6 a.m., La Mesa Dam is in red alert. Its water level is 79.51 meters, which is near the spilling level of 80.15 meters. The dam has no gates and there is a chance the dam will overflow to the Tullahan River,” said Gene Nievares, Pagasa hydrologist.
Tullahan River traverses several barangays in Novaliches, both in Quezon City and Caloocan City, Valenzuela City and Malabon City.
Water levels of Magat Dam in Isabela and Ipo Dam in Bulacan also reached near spilling levels, according to Nievares.
The Magat Dam, with a critical level of 190 meters, has reached 188.06 meters, while the Ipo dam has notched 108.80 meters, with a spilling level of 100.80 meters as of 6 a.m. Sunday. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)

MANILA (Updated 10:00 a.m.) — Classes from pre-school to high school levels in Metro Manila and several nearby provinces have been suspended Monday due to the heavy downpour and strong winds brought by Tropical Storm Gener (international codename: Saola).
As of 4 a.m. Monday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said “Gener” was estimated at 330 kilometers east northeast of Aparri, Cagayan.
“Gener” has maximum sustained winds of 105 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 135 kph. It continues to move north northwest at 11 kph.
With this, local officials have announced class suspension in the following areas: Manila, Marikina, Quezon City, San Juan, Pasig, Paranaque, Cainta, Angono, Antipolo, Tanay, San Mateo, Rodriguez in Rizal, Dasmariñas, Cavite, and Obando in Bulacan and several low-lying areas there.
There are also no classes in the following private schools: University of Santo Tomas, New Era University, Miriam College, University of the East, St. Paul University and De la Salle University.
On Sunday, at least 13 domestic flights, mostly involving light aircraft from Manila to Caticlan and vice versa, have been cancelled due to bad weather.
According to a media advisory of the Manila International Airport Authority on Sunday, Cebu Pacific Airlines cancelled four flights — 5J 893, 895, 913 and 919 — bound for Caticlan, and five flights — 5J 894, 898, 914, 892 and 920 — back to Manila.
Cebu Pacific also cancelled flights 5J 513 bound for San Jose in Occidental Mindoro and the return flight 5J 514.
Air Philippines also decided to cancel flights 2P 039 from Manila to Caticlan and 2P 040 from Caticlan to Manila as Pagasa placed seven areas in Northern Luzon under public storm signal on Sunday after “Gener” intensified into a storm.
These seven areas remained under public storm signal as of Monday morning. Placed under public storm signal number 2 are Cagayan province, Calayan Group of Islands, Babuyan Group of Islands, and Batanes Group of Islands.
Public storm signal number 1 is still hoisted in the provinces of Isabela, Kalinga, and Apayao.
Although “Gener” has slowed down, the weather bureau said the storm is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon that will bring rains over Central and Southern Luzon and Visayas, especially the western section, and Northern Mindanao.
Fishing boats and other small sea crafts are advised not to venture out into the seaboards of Central and Southern Luzon, Visayas, and eastern seaboard of Mindanao due to the combined effects of the storm and the southwest monsoon.
Residents living in low-lying and mountainous areas under public storm warning signals and areas affected by the southwest monsoon are alerted against possible flash floods and landslides. Likewise, those living in coastal areas under public storm warning signal number 2 are alerted against big waves or storm surges generated by this tropical cyclone.
