2009 Napa Valley Cabernet: The Chronicle recommends

Napa Cabernet is typically our biggest and most pivotal tasting of the year. Our panel considered some 60 wines from the 2009 vintage in a range of prices.
We found wines that exemplified the power of Napa and the freshness and aging potential of great Cabernet. In particular, there was a surge of quality from some of the valley’s most established names. That includes wines like the Robert Mondavi Cabernet, which you might say started it all in Napa’s modern era, and the estate bottle from J. Davies, which is Schramsberg’s line of red wines.
Below are top choices from the panel and other recent tastings, representing a cross-section of Napa’s best from a memorable vintage.
2009 Corison Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($70, 13.6% alcohol): Here was just the sort of vintage to play to Cathy Corison’s strengths – a year where you could make a taut, ripe wine without a drop of fat. Corison handled it beautifully. Full of mineral power, with pencil lead and chicory, and a tobacco-leaf freshness. Plummy, tight and a bit dusky, a subtly shaded wine with nuance and refinement.
2009 Tor Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($75, 14.4%): Jeff Ames’ efforts for Tor Kenward’s label again dialed in a hearty but complex style, this time in a blend of its three key vineyard sources: Howell Mountain’s Cimarossa, Yountville’s Mast and Oakville’s To Kalon. Ripe and full of cinnamon spice (a signature of Cimarossa), but the fruit is tense and raspberry-edged, matched by savory sandalwood, mustard seed and currant. A lot in the mix here.
2009 Larkmead Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($70, 14.5% alcohol): While the estate Cabernet from this wonderfully revived Calistoga property is hardly shy, it’s also a standout example from the vintage. Fresh, mineral-driven and full of dusty plum and mint leaf, the 2009 is classic and surprisingly racy, with a ton of structure but enough graphite and earth that it never feels driven by fruit. A sign of how the older and new Napa styles are being bridged.
2009 J. Davies Estate Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon ($80, 14.5%): Schramsberg’s Hugh Davies has been working for years toward a red wine that matches the quality of his sparkling, and in 2009 his Calistoga property, which encompasses some of Napa’s earlier hillside vineyard sites, was fully dialed in. It needs cellar time to shine, but here’s the full power of his site on display – a tightly-wound and savory mouthful: sagebrush, tobacco, mint and black coffee, with dark fruit brooding and a spectacular expression of that loamy Diamond Mountain character.
2009 Round Pond Estate Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon ($50, 14.5%): The MacDonnell family’s site in the core of Rutherford again yielded a terrific value of a wine (also true of their $30 bottle aged in old wood and using some bought fruit). 2009 was a tighter, more focused effort for Round Pond, but winemaker Brian Brown dialed back the evidence of oak to let clean black cherry, chicory and dust notes shine. It’s still a notably ripe creation, but with great savory touches – dried herb, pencil shaving.
2009 Hess Collection Allomi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($28, 14.4%): Hess’ mainline Cabernet is somewhat off-message for Napa these days – sourced from its site near the south end of Howell Mountain, aged in mostly older American oak. And so it’s all the more impressive: Pretty and slightly floral, with a dusky violet side amid the black fruit, plus a welcome cinnamon-candy bite. Its sweetness feels appropriate and just right for the nuanced flavors.
2009 Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($28, 14.5%): The current state of Mondavi finds its strength in the basics, including this found-everywhere bottle that, impressively, includes more than 30 percent fruit from Robert Mondavi’s beloved To Kalon vineyard. A classic, loam-tinged profile, with cassis and black tea and a robust, chewy presence. It’s very much a sum of its parts, but the bones are impressively solid for the price.
2009 Louis M. Martini Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($30, 14.5%): Full credit to Mike Martini, whose family’s winery now resides under the Gallo umbrella, for again delivering a classically styled, user-friendly Napa Cab at a level (65,200 cases) that leaves most counterparts foundering. It’s not purely classic – that 5 percent Petite Sirah nods at a different set of traditions – but it’s just rich enough, with sweet black cherry, plus espresso accents and a salty side, to show its roots without going to the jammy side.
2009 Napa Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($22, 14.1% alcohol): Score one for this long-established name, now part of the Trinchero family’s stable of properties. It’s evidence of how blending from a range of Napa sites can work at a reasonable price, without becoming generic. Full of fun and familiar Napa flavors: a smoky side, with a hint of dried red pepper, brambly fruit and a throat-lozenge glide to the texture.
2009 Terra Valentine Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon ($45, 14.9%): The Wurtele family’s Spring Mountain property certainly has shown its mettle in recent years, and in this vintage the dense mountain tannins are balanced with great mineral freshness and a warm kirsch-like side. Wonderful savory tones – a meatiness that should mellow with a couple years aging. Sam Baxter’s winemaking continues to frame the great potential of this site.
2009 Antica Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($55, 14%): Piero Antinori’s rebirth of his Atlas Peak project ( sfg.ly/Jy7278) is coming into its own with this classy, distinctive expression of 2009 that enjoyed an extra year bottle aging. A meaty, earthbound profile – wet clay, copper, cassis and rich raspberry, with clear mineral and tree-bark accents that certainly hint at a mind-set geared toward a more earth-driven style. Polished, but not at the cost of distinction.
2009 Stony Hill Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($60, 13.5%): An unexpected surprise from the McCrea family’s long-established winery, known far more for its white wines. You either take or leave the hard-edged style, with its exposed tannins, but its appealing floral side – sachet, raspberry, bright mineral – shows a different, and delicious, aspect of Napa.
2009 Buehler Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($36, 14.1%): The Buehler family, and winemaker David Cronin, again succeed in poking at Napa’s high-wire economics with wines that cost perhaps half the going rate, and in 2009 their estate effort, aged in more new French oak, marks a solid step up from the basic Napa bottle. It delivers a wallop of graphite and smoke – think dried cherry and a warm grass fire – and its meaty side is matched by a distinct freshness.
2009 Robert Craig Affinity Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($50, 14.5%): Craig has long been an expert in the Napa hillsides, but there’s something notably appealing about this blend (Petit Verdot and Merlot make cameos) from the foothills around Mount George in southeast Napa. An enthusiastic dose of oak can’t mask great dried-herb and graphite complexity, or its robust bramble fruit character. Big and dense, with a plushness and tea-like herbal side.
2009 Chappellet Pritchard Hill Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($135, 15.1%): Even in this cooler year, the Chappellets are unabashed in the style of their top wine. Once again the Pritchard Hill, perched above Lake Hennessey, is a grand snapshot of modern Napa at its best. Big, dense and polished – with a kirsch-like heat but also a lot of mineral power. Graphite, dried leaves, coriander and exotic spice amid deeply extracted black fruit. A classy expression of this site’s extraordinary potential, with a bit of Petit Verdot and Malbec in the mix.
2009 Cameron Hughes Lot 285 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon ($24, 14.5%): As always, Hughes’ efforts are catch as catch can, but this recent lot from Rutherford is both plentiful (10,400 cases) and reliable. A surprising lift to the flavors – more red fruit and cassis, with lower tones of ripe blackberry – is matched by a dusty presence and toasted coffee bean. Quintessential Rutherford.
2009 Tudal Estate St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon ($65, 14.5%): The Tudals’ small St. Helena vineyard yielded a mineral-edged, aromatic effort in this milder year, and winemaker Kirk Venge guided it to something that resembles the Napa Cabernets of 20 years ago, with focus and freshness even in its size. Full of dried thyme and bramble fruit, and densely knit darker flavors for balance.

Red Before Labor Day: Summer’s New Rules

THE weather won’t matter. Dry and bright would be ideal for stoking the grill, but even muggy heat or dispiriting drizzle won’t stanch the joyous sense of letting go that arrives with Memorial Day weekend.
Aside from the holiday’s ceremonial importance — honoring the men and women who have died serving in the armed forces — the weekend means one thing to most: the unofficial start of summer. As with fashion and food, drinking assumes a more casual, easygoing tone.
Yet the old rules no longer hold. Toss aside the stodgy, outmoded dogma of summer as white-wine season, for one thing. Bourbon need not be consigned to the recesses of the closet in favor of rum and vodka.
For too long, seasonal drinking has been considered a matter of color: reds for the cold; rosés and whites for the heat. Similar rules hold with beer. Friends may gasp as I drink a pint of Guinness in my shorts and sunglasses. They assume dark beers are heavy. But I just smile. Little do they know that Irish stout is crisp, dry and low in alcohol.
It’s not color that guides the choice of warm-weather beverages, but weight. Just as woolens give way to cottons and linens, so do heavier wines, beers and spirits yield to beverages with less ballast. What seems robust and warming in the bleak cold now feels ponderous and unwieldy. By contrast, what felt insubstantial back then is now refreshing and energizing.
Punch, for instance, is often associated with fall and winter holidays. Yet it can be made seasonal with the delicate spring sweetness of strawberries, and summery with the tropical tang of limes. Sure, you could settle for a bland base of vodka, but bourbon adds the perfect backbone of vanilla richness.
Red wines have their place, too. Why would anybody assume that in the heat of summer the desire to drink them simply evaporates? You’re not planning to serve a Sancerre with that porterhouse sizzling on the grill, are you? Of course not. A hefty zinfandel or full-bodied cabernet sauvignon would be too much, but a good Chianti, of medium weight with refreshing acidity is just the thing, especially if you chill it ever so lightly.
Commercially, Memorial Day heralds rosé season, a custom I cannot abide because I like rosé year-round. Great rosés — like those from Château Pradeaux and Domaine Tempier in Bandol; Château Simone in Palette; Valentini in Montepulciano; and my current obsession, Domaine Ilarria in Irouléguy — are as fulfilling in the depths of January as in July’s dank heat.
Not all rosés are as versatile, however. Does anybody really want a heavy rosé in the midday heat or while tending the coals before dinner? I don’t think so. In most rosés, a heavy dose of alcohol or a clumsy level of sweetness will unbalance the wine. The rosés to look for are crisp, textured and refreshing.
From Provence, rosé’s spiritual home, I like Château de Roquefort, Domaine du Jas d’Esclans and Peyrassol. But good rosés come from all over, like Spain, including Campos de Enanzo in Navarra and Los Bermejos in the Canary Islands; Shinn Estate on Long Island; and Arnot-Roberts in California, which makes an unusual but delicious rosé from touriga nacional, a leading port grape growing in Lake County.
They make rosé in Champagne, too, many good ones. But nothing is particularly summery about them, and they are often heavier than the usual bruts.
If you want a great summer bubbly, may I suggest Cerdon du Bugey from Renardat-Fâche? This light-bodied pink sparkling wine has noticeable sweetness, but is beautifully balanced and stimulating as an aperitif or refreshing after dinner.
I mentioned a bourbon, strawberry and lime punch earlier. Made with elderberry tea and Angostura bitters, it is wonderful for a crowd: refreshing, tangy and celebratory. But if you don’t plan a big gathering, simply diminish the proportions in the recipe here. It’s offered occasionally at Prime Meats in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, where it was developed by Damon W. Boelte, bar director for the Frankies group of restaurants, who calls it Too Hot to Hoot and describes it as summer in a bowl.
“Bourbon and lime is a rare combination,” he said. “It usually goes with lemon, but with all the other ingredients, they really play well together.”
More often than not, this weekend calls out for a beer or a few. I love the dry, snappy bitterness of a pilsner. Excellent versions are made in New York by Sixpoint and Brooklyn Breweries. Other good pilsners include those from Victory, Lakefront, Tröegs and Pilsner Urquell.
I can’t help but reiterate my love of Kölsch, the crisp, slightly bitter golden ale from Cologne, Germany, which I find so brisk and energizing. The three brands seen regularly are Gaffel, Reissdorf and Sünner, and I find a lot to like about each.
Stout is not the only dark beer appropriate for summer. I especially like porter, too. But thoughts of summer beer would not be complete without a nod to Belgian and Bavarian wheat beers — fresh, spicy and intrinsically refreshing. Look for Belgian styles from Allagash, Hoegaarden, Southampton Publick House and Jolly Pumpkin; among the many producers of Bavarian-style hefeweizen, look for Franziskaner, Schneider Weisse, Brooklyn and Ayinger.
After rosés, most wine drinkers reach reflexively at Memorial Day for whites, as if they’re the equivalent of white belts and shoes: enjoyed for the summer and stowed after Labor Day. I hate to say it, but that thinking is as dated as instant coffee; sure, you’ll have something in your glass, but why deprive yourself of so much pleasure?
I especially like reds that are lightly chilled, not to refrigerator temperature, but just enough to feel cool in the glass. Beaujolais, of course, but also Cerasuolo di Vittoria, the lovely, enticing light red from Sicily. Valle dell’Acate, COS and Occhipinti all make excellent versions. Look also for frappato, one of the constituent grapes of Cerasuolo di Vittoria.
Many other Italian reds go beautifully with a light chill, whether Chianti, barbera, dolcetto, Valpolicella or lesser-known grapes like teroldego from Trentino or cornalin from the Valle d’Aoste. And if you need a full-on refrigerator blast, how about an icy cold Lambrusco from a top producer like Lini, Medici Ermete or Vittorio Graziano?
Or perhaps one of the more restrained pinot noirs from the Sonoma Coast of California? Ross Cobb of Cobb Wines makes excellent pinot noirs that are delightful lightly chilled, particularly those from the Emmaline and Coastlands vineyards. From Spain, try the reds from Ribeira Sacra, a stunning site in eastern Galicia. I especially like D. Ventura and Guímaro wines.
Now, just because I’m touting reds doesn’t mean I’m immune to the charms of summer whites. Far from it. I love a crisp Sancerre, especially those that show the terroir rather than simply the fruitiness of the sauvignon grape. Look for producers like Gérard Boulay, Lucien Crochet, Domaine Vacheron and Thomas-Labaille. Rieslings can be superbly refreshing, whether the light off-dry style of a kabinett riesling from the Mosel; the spätlese-style late-harvest riesling of Hermann J. Wiemer in the Finger Lakes; or the dry mineral flavors of Ravines, a Finger Lakes riesling of a totally different style.
For many people, chardonnay remains synonymous with white wine. Summer or winter, I’ll never say no to Chablis, the most distinctive chardonnay in the world, and out in the Santa Rita Hills of Santa Barbara County, Rajat Parr, the Bay Area sommelier, sells deliciously balanced chardonnays under the Sandhi label.
What, you’ve graduated to pinot grigio? Well, I have nothing against good pinot grigio. (Relegate the insipid ones to the mediocre restaurants of the world.) For good ones, producers like Elena Walch and Alois Lageder of Alto Adige have much to offer.
You know, I’m really just getting started. With any luck, it’ll be a long, hot summer.

Jancis Robinson picks out lower alcohol, cooler climate and regional varieties as trends

Quality over quantity, celebrating wholesomeness, cutting down on oak and alcohol content, seeking out cooler climates and reintroducing regional varieties are just some of the trends in wine identified by Jancis Robinson MW.

Speaking at today’s LIWF conference Robinson said her views were “subjective impressions”, that are not yet showing up in huge numbers in statistics gathered, but she added, “I expect them to become more important”.
Robinson added that trends were global in nature and can spread “remarkably quickly” in the world of wine these days.

“There’s one big overarching trend: we are forfeiting quantity for quality. It’s necessary to make better wine every year,” Robinson said.

“We have a much greater respect for nature and the natural – there’s a much greater trend towards celebrating the natural,” she added.

As for stylistic trends, the market is moving away from bigger, oakier wines – even in the USA, and moving towards lower alcohol wines, which she said was being spearheaded by Australia. “Sometimes it’s at the expense of flavour, but you can’t fault them [Australian winemakers] for reacting fast.”

Producers are also trying to react to climate change by looking for cooler climate areas. “California has been the bastion of wine celebrated for high alcohol”, she said, but even there, the “‘bigger is better’ as a proposition is weakening”.

Chile is the “most dramatic example”, with “new cooler regions popping up almost by the minute”, she added.

The Pacific Ocean has been the biggest influence in producing more elegant wines in recent times, both in North and South America, said Robinson. Elsewhere producers are seeking out higher altitudes: the Argentinians are moving up into the Andes; South Africans are founding new 800m regions such as Upper Langkloof, Australians are looking towards Tasmania and higher areas of New South Wales while Spain’s north-west Atlantic corner is producing “very attractive wines”.

“Welcome back Beaujolais,” pronounced Robinson, adding that Loire wines “are on the threshold of a comeback”.

Producers are being more adventurous with varieties, added Robinson. “Back in the 1990s I was concerned that all vineyards would be overrun with Cabernet Sauvignon and maybe a little bit of Merlot.” But she counted 40 varieties at the recent Tesco and Waitrose tastings.

“There’s been a big change in heritage varieties – people are putting a lot of effort into identifying, rescuing and promulgating the grape varieties of their region, as well as planting alternative varieties,” she said.

In her soon-to-be-published Wine Grapes, she identifies almost 1,400 grape varieties that make wine in commercial production.

Less agrochemical usage, more mechanisation in the vineyard, less routine irrigation, less use of barrels and more natural winemaking were also pinpointed by Robinson. But she said: “Just being natural is not enough – you’ve got to be natural and good.”

If Euro collapses investors will move into wine

If the Eurozone collapses, there will be a move into wine from investors, but it will be short-lived – that’s according to the Financial Times’ investment columnist John Authers.

Speaking at the London International Wine Fair’s opening conference, Authers warned that as an asset wine’s performance would be playing on growth in China or on global inequality. “It puts a great deal of faith in China to pull through,” he added.

Given current pressures on the Eurozone, Authers summarised that while a “Grexit [Greek exit from the Euro] would be bad, a total break-up would be an economic disaster for the entire eurozone”. He predicted that a fall in output across the Eurozone of between 11 and 15%, “worse than anything seen since they 1930s”.

Wine, as a “hard asset”, stands to perform well in the current crisis, as investors seek out non-correlated assets [wine is not directly correlated to either bonds or stocks]; assets that get them access to China and “access to the next bubble”, predicted Authers.

Citing Joe Roseman’s book, SWAG: Alternative Investments for the Coming Decade (Silver, Wine, Arts and Gold), Authers said that wine offers the returns of gold, with less volatility. “Wine is a very attractive addition to a portfolio – it makes a lot of money,” he said.

Authers writes about Black Swans – extreme events which have a low probability of happening, such as the break-up of the Euro. “The Euro should never have started when it did, as the countries were too disparate,” said Authers.

He said that while Greece pulling out of the Euro was “not news”, and the single currency could probably withstand its departure, Spain offered the “greatest cause for concern to bring down the Euro”.

DecanterChina.com to launch in autumn

The Asian wine market has grown dramatically in recent years, with Chinese consumption reaching 156.19 million cases in 2011, putting China in 5th place of the top 5 wine-consuming nations worldwide, ahead of the UK, according to a Vinexpo study.
Two new editorial staff, based in IPC Media’s London-based Blue Fin Building, have been assigned to work on the site.
They will report to editor John Abbott, and will be joined by a host of top-name contributors from across China, creating content especially designed for this new audience.
Built by multi award-winning brand strategy and communications firm Eight Partnership and set to launch in autumn 2012, the new site will focus on education, and will include a translation glossary for key wine terms, event listings as well as the latest wine news and top recommendations. It will be fully integrated with the hugely popular Chinese microblogging website, Weibo.
John Abbott, Editor of Decanter.com and DecanterChina.com said, ‘We are very excited to be able to bring our significant publishing experience to engage with a new audience of wine lovers. Along with our Chinese editors and contributors we are looking forward to building an active community with those who love to talk and learn about wine.’
Publishing director Sarah Kemp added, ‘The fact that Decanter has always put consumers first has built its international reputation. The launch of www.decanterchina.com is an opportunity for us to reach this new generation of wine consumers and converse with them in their own language.‘
The launch of DecanterChina.com follows the recent launch of the Decanter Asia Wine Awards, a sister competition to the Decanter World Wine Awards, recognising wines targeted at the Asian market, judged by Asia’s most prominent wine experts. The new site will be the home and publishing platform for the results of the Decanter Asia Wine Awards.
Decanter will also be presenting a conference entitled ‘Discovering the Chinese wine lover’ at the forthcoming Vinexpo Hong Kong, on Wednesday 30 May, 14:30 – 16:00pm.
Decanter Magazine was launched in 1975. Decanter today comprises of Europe’s leading wine events, the Decanter Fine Wine Encounters, Decanter.com, launched in 2000, Europe’s leading wine website and Decanter World Wine Awards, the world’s largest wine competition. Decanter has recently been shortlisted for Consumer Media Brand of the Year by the PPA (Professional Publishers Association).

From Farm Workers to Wine Makers—Latinos are a Growing Force in the Wine Industry

From Charles Krug, the pioneer, to Robert Mondavi the father, Napa and Sonoma counties in California are considered Mecca for wine making in the United States. But from the 1960s on, it’s been the Latino labor force behind the wineries fueling the industry.
Today, many of its workers have become wine owners and influencers. With labels like Maldonado, Alex Sotelo, Ceja, Mi Sueno, and Robledo, sommelier/wine director Jesse Rodríguez, and radio host and associate member of the Napa/Sonoma Mexican-American Vintners Association, Sandra González, the faces of the wine world are slowly changing.
The stories are unique but similar. The young immigrant men and women moving to the US to pick grapes; migrant farm workers who see possibilities beyond the fields. Folks who put themselves through school at night and work during the day to learn all they need to know about wine. How to grow it, how to process it, the chemistry behind it, the best barrels and bottles, and how to taste it—making sure it’s the best.
I became a farmer to survive. I worked 60-hour weeks in the vineyards at the Robert Pecota winery. After a while I was put in charge of the field. Then I was given an opportunity to work in the lab.
– Alex Sotelo, winery owner
“I was sent to the US when I was 18. I didn’t speak English. I became a farmer to survive. I worked 60-hour weeks in the vineyards at the Robert Pecota winery. After a while I was put in charge of the field. Then I was given an opportunity to work in the lab,” said winery owner Alex Sotelo.
Sotelo said he knew he needed a formal education to get ahead.
“It took me over five years in Community College, working full-time during the day to get my degree,” Sotelo said. “I started with many other Latinos, but by the end, there were fewer and fewer. That was very hard to see.”
Sotelo moved on to become a Cellar Master and later an assistant wine maker. By 1998, he became the main winemaker and by 2000 was making wine for multiple clients. In 2002, Sotelo created his own label—though it was hosted by someone else’s winery (Only 20 percent of all wines in Napa have their own location).
The biggest step any wine maker can take, he said, is to own the land and process the wine on their own.
“It takes a large fortune to make a small fortune in the wine business,” says Sotelo. But he has great hope for the future of Latino winemakers.
“We have a great work ethic as a people and we know the industry. I mentor high school students and it’s great to teach them about some of the possibilities in this business.”
Jesse Rodríguez, a director of wine and a sommelier, works at the 5-star Addison Restaurant and Grand Del Mar resort, located in San Diego, Calif. He’s the man behind all of the wine served at the resort as well as any events catered there—3,577 selections of wine. Before the Grand, he was head sommelier at the famed French Laundry in Napa for four years.
“I feel like I got my start working at my grandparent’s restaurant, Jimmy’s Casa in Beaumont California, near Riverside. I did everything from picking up cigarette butts and cleaning toilets to waiting on tables. But every Sunday our family would sit down together and eat a five-course meal,” he said. “It was my introduction to the culinary industry I work in today. It’s probably why I have the attitude about wine as a grocery. It shouldn’t be thought of as for the elite only. It’s a vehicle to help bring out the taste in good food.”
There are only 186 Master Sommeliers in the world. Of those, 118 are American, and just 17 are women. Next month, Rodríguez will take the Master Sommelier test in Aspen. If he passes, he will become one of only five Latino Master Sommeliers in the U.S.
Sandra González has a weekly radio show in Sacramento called Wine Country Con Sabor. On Thursday mornings, AM channel 1440, she talks about wine, food, art, and all things related to Latino culture. Her family is from Mexico and came to the Central Valley to work in the fields. After working at the Wine Institute for seven years, she left to run a couture bridal boutique for large-size brides with her mother.
Dedicated to wine education, González was the first person to organize a couple of events that would have huge impact in the Latino wine community.
“In 2003, we called it a ‘Get To Know You’ Harvest luncheon. I brought together all the growers, vintners, wine makers, and culinary people—all the Latino wine influencers. People were so excited. It was a very positive and inspiring event.”
In 2004, González organized an event called “Sabor de Napa”. It was the first ever-public wine tasting event in US, bringing together US Latino vintners, chefs and artists.
“In 2004 we created the Hispanic Vintners Alliance, which six years later became the Napa/Sonoma Mexican-American Vintners Association, González said. “The mission then is the same today. We’re trying to bring the next generations into the industry. We want to educate consumers as well of the many roles of Latinos in these areas.”
Over 40 percent of the Napa Valley is Latino, but only 3 percent are in powerful positions within the wine business.
“That has to change,” says Hugo Maldonado of Maldonado wineries.
Hugo Maldonado started with his father Lupe over 44 years ago, working his way up from the fields to vineyard manager. Maldonado succeeded his father in 1999. At that time, Lupe bought seven acres of land in Southern Napa.
In 2002, Maldonado produced their first 227 cases of wine from the grapes grown on their own small piece of acreage—and sold every one. Maldonado is the only Latino owned winery with caves where they’re able to bottle and store wine in Napa.
Maldonado’s wines were served in the White House under President George Bush, and this year Maldonado’s 2009 Chardonnay, Los Olivos, was awarded 94 points out of 100 by Wine Spectator.
“Our wines are well received, but it’s challenging especially with a Latino label. But I’m convinced there’s a great wave of young people coming up. My daughter and her boyfriend are both studying Viticulture in college. We’re not just in the fields anymore,” Maldonado said. “We’re a force to be reckoned with.”

Marketing Wine to the Next Generation

Sonoma, Calif.—At a large wine festival in New York, Tyler Balliet witnessed what he described as “one of the saddest things I ever saw.” A group of young people who—while excited to be at the $85-per-ticket event—were clearly flummoxed about how to appreciate wine. Without knowing what to do, Balliet said one member of the group turned to another and said, “Screw it, let’s just get drunk.” The story, Balliet said, serves as an example of how the wine industry has failed to connect with the younger generation of U.S. wine drinkers. According to Mutineer magazine editor and founder Alan Kropf, it’s emblematic of the insular, niche wine culture that has reduced the joy of drinking wine to mere scores in a 100-point system. To change that, Kropf, Balliet and a host of other young wine experts paid a visit to California’s wine country this week to present the Mutineer Magazine Marvelous Millennial Wine Marketing Circus. Before stopping at Sebastiani Winery in Sonoma last week, the troupe peddled its message in the California wine locales of Calaveras County, Santa Barbara and Paso Robles. They delivered a presentation in Napa Valley at Charles Krug on Friday. The “circus” included confetti blasters, free popcorn, music and the appearance during one presentation of a helium-filled, shark-shaped remote-controlled blimp that floated above the heads of the roughly 100 people in attendance. Kropf said the surge of new wineries in the past decade, the advent of new media and rise of direct-to-consumer sales have created the opportunity for a profound cultural change in the wine world. In the past, Kropf said wineries have been focused on a limited revenue- and balance sheet-driven view of the industry. Success in the future will depend on how authentic wineries are in their effort to connect to consumers. “Good wine is not enough anymore,” he said. Instead, wineries will have to be innovative and unique in their marketing while not sacrificing the authenticity of brand image.

Women in Wine: The Three Graces

Recently I decided to conquer a great fear in my very storied and bizarre life — the dreaded Wine List. As a fashion designer, writer, and man about town I’m very fortunate to be invited to fancy and swanky restaurants, soirees and events. Therefore to put it plainly, I spend a fair amount of time inhaling great food and swigging fine wine. I know – don’t cry for me Argentina. However, not until recently did I truly realize I wasn’t fully appreciating the art, process and tradition of fine dining and particularly, the crafstmanship of great wine. But all of this about to change — and when Mister GoLightly decides to make a change, he brings everyone along for the ride.
The first thing I knew I would need to begin my transformation from vino novice to wine connoisseur was a team of experts. Yes experts, as I plan on taking my wine consumption very seriously from this point forward. Therefore I will require a trio of professionals to guide me in the right direction. So I decided to seek assistance from the people closest to me. I telephoned, emailed, and met with almost every person I knew that had anything to do with the wine business. However, what I found a little strange was that most of the people I knew in the wine biz were all men. While most of the men I spoke with were all very passionate and educated about wine, there was just something about their approach that didn’t quite fit with what I was trying to get at in my quest. I really wanted to know more about the sense of reverence that seems to surround the art of wine tasting and making. In essence, I really wanted to be educated on the beauty, charm and creativity of fine wine. Somehow, this got me to wondering, “Are there many women in the wine business?” I didn’t have very long to ponder the question as it was magically answered one fateful afternoon while having lunch at the Four Seasons in New York City. I started yammering on and on about my need to connect to people in the wine business when a dear friend said to me, “You should meet one of the owner’s daughter, Keiko. She knows all about wine.”
BEAUTY: The strikingly gorgeous and modelesque Keiko Niccolini was born into the charmed world of restaurants and fine dining — the venerable Four Seasons Restaurant to be exact. Legend has it that Keiko could filet a Dover sole and saber a bottle of champagne before she could ride a bike. As a young girl she could be found on any given day running through the hallowed halls of the family business. However, as an adult she now travels the world in search of new dishes and wines to bring to the tables of the Four Season as well as her wine consulting firm AMEDEO. Keiko as you can imagine, was destined for a life in food and wine.
And now, Keiko Niccolini has agreed to be my guru, my personal guide as I embark on a mysterious journey into and beyond Wine Tasting 101.
Under Ms. Niccolini’s tutelage and through the course of our adventures, I am hoping to come out on the other end a lot more knowledgeable and a little less afraid of sampling and experiencing new wines and spirits. It is also my desire to finally retire my catch phrase when it comes to choosing or drinking wine, “It doesn’t matter what I drink — I only drink to get drunk.” Which is only partly true. Who cares if every time I repeat it Keiko reacts as if someone has taken their well manicured fingernails and scratched them down a freshly wiped chalkboard. Well I care — and hopefully somewhere along the way, this juvenile retort will be retired and replaced with language that describes delicious wine with the respect and grace it rightfully deserves.
Needless to say, Keiko and I have become fast friends. Recently after attending a not-so-fabulous and actually quite boring soiree, she thought that it would be the perfect time for a surprise crash course in wine tasting — total emergence in wine culture. So she decided to introduce me to a real-life Master Sommelier, Ms. Laura Maniec.
CHARM: Laura Maniec is a Native New Yorker and the charismatic owner of Corkbuzz Wine Studio. During the course of our evening I learned that Laura actually discovered her true enthusiasm for wine through an 18-week sommelier certification class at Windows of the World. It was through this experience that she was inspired, motivated and excited to pursue a career in wine.
A girl after my own heart, just as Laura was legally able to drink she became a sommelier at Blue Fin in New York City. Progressing quickly, she was made a partner as well as wine and spirits director for the entire B.R. Guest Restaurant Group of 20 restaurants across the country. At only 25 years old, she was managing the wine list as well as educating the entire front-of-house team on wine.
It turns out the charming and personable Ms. Maniec earned her Master Sommelier designation in 2009 and is currently the youngest in the world. Not to mention she is one of only 18 women to have achieved this highest accreditation given to wine professionals. And on this night she too agreed to join the team and proceeded to give me a VIP guided tour through their intense and intimidating wine list. But for the first time in being presented a normally daunting wine list, I wasn’t afraid. I was almost downright giddy. What did I have to fear? I was now armed with not only a wine guru but also a master sommelier. Take that 33- or 72-page wine list! Okay, in all honesty, I may be exaggerating the personal attention given just to me by our master sommelier. You see Laura seems to possess the uncanny ability to give everyone that enters the doors of CorkBuzz the same level of attention and graciousness — an ability rarely found in New York City eateries these days.
To attempt description of the champagnes, reds, whites and rosés that danced and dazzled in my mouth on this evening would do CorkBuzz and Ms. Maniec a grave injustice. I don’t possess the eloquence to characterize the pas de deux that took place between the exquisite wine list and the culinary masterpieces prepared by their Executive Chef, Hayan Yi. I don’t dare attempt to formulate adequate prose to depict the near religious experience that visitors share in this tastefully decorated restaurant and wine bar. To try and fail would be borderline blasphemy. However after almost closing down the joint accompanied by a magnificent high that had no resemblance at all to being drunk, I felt as if I had to rush home and immediately repent, “Our Mother, Full of Grace…”
Which brings me to the most recent introduction to form my dream team, my trilogy, my Three Graces…
For several weeks during our tastings and outings, Keiko kept saying to me, “You have to meet my mentor in all things wine. You will love her.” I will admit, in my experience whenever someone says to me “You will love him or her,” this has rarely ever been the case. But this was coming from my guru — my liege, and she hadn’t steered me wrong thus far. So off I went the other afternoon, in the pouring New York City rain, to The Modern restaurant located at the Museum of Modern Art to meet Ms. Joy Sterling.
CREATIVITY: The inventive and visionary Joy Sterling represents the second generation of wine making at Iron Horse Vineyards. She is the CEO of the winery and the author of four books on the art of wine. Although she was born in America, Joy grew up in Paris, attended a French school, and speaks fluent French. Living in Europe and traveling extensively, Ms. Sterling received an extraordinary education in the appreciation of food and wine as well as a love of quality wherever it is found in the world.
Joy returned to the United States to attend Yale University where she studied history and economics. After her studies she went into journalism, first for United Press International, followed by local television, and ultimately, network TV news. At the age of 29, Joy was Deputy Bureau Chief for ABC Network News in Los Angeles. She was given numerous special assignments including coverage of the first Space Shuttle landings in California, coordinating producer for several Presidential trips, and the high point of her career, Assignment Editor for ABC’s 1984 Olympic coverage.
In 1985, Joy left ABC’s hierarchy to join her family’s business. Thus, a new sort of woman was recruited into California’s wine industry. Significantly, she made news headlines for the winery with her first achievement at Iron Horse. In November, 1985, the White House selected Iron Horse Sparkling Wine for the President’s toast to peace at the first summit meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev in Geneva.
Joy quietly took up the reins at Iron Horse at the start of 2006, having spent 20 years traveling on behalf of the winery, personally introducing the wines to an impressive list of customers from Spago in Beverly Hills to the Four Seasons in New York.
She is an adventurer, having climbed Kilimanjaro, run white water rapids on the Bio-Bio River in Chile and the upper reaches of the Yank Sing River in China, trekked in Tibet and Bhutan, and completed a road trip to Timbuktu.
Joy joined the prestigious Board of Trustees of The Leakey Foundation in 2007. One of her major initiatives is hosting an annual fundraising and awareness raising event in partnership with National Geographic celebrating Earth Day held at Iron Horse.
Now I ask you — What is there not to love about Joy a.k.a. @JoyBubbles? From the moment we made eye contact as I shuffled in from the pouring rain, looking more disheveled like Ms. GoLightly’s wet cat than the intended flawlessness of Holly off to visit Sally Tomato at Sing-Sing, I innately knew that I would be captivated and bewitched by the accomplished Joy Sterling.
Joy is earth-mother, rainmaker and wine whisperer wrapped into one stylish, hot-mama of a package. Did I mention she was also wearing a navy vintage Dior dress? I almost died and went to heaven at the sight of this magnificent being. The one thing you quickly learn about Joy within five minutes of being in her presence is that she is filled with love, life and passion. As we shared a bottle of her world famous Iron Horse Wedding Cuvee I found out that she is also a hugger, a great thinker, a visionary, a powerhouse, and just an awesome down-to-earth gal.
During the entire afternoon my eyes kept darting from Keiko to Joy, my mind was racing, but my mouth couldn’t keep up with all the thoughts bursting through my brain. I must have come across as a complete crazy person but what I couldn’t explain to either of these incredible women was how I was finally beginning to understand it all. How I understood there was more than just wine they had in common. How I could see the ancestral sisterhood, the kinship, an indigo hued spiritual camaraderie void of competition or pettiness. But mostly, I was in complete and utter awe. I found myself in an absolute state of humbled gratitude. Grateful that I had been allowed to bare witness to their sublime and noble grace.
As I finally sat down to write this piece, I couldn’t believe that in only a few short weeks I had already begun to develop a true appreciation for wines produced in Napa Valley as well as grapes grown in the Vittoria region of Sicily. I discovered that my preference for all things “pink and bubbly” had very little to do with my flamboyance and sexual orientation and much more to do with the various techniques and processes utilized to achieve just the right shade, smell and taste of Rosé. And while I am still at the very beginning stages of my wine adventures, I doubt very seriously if I will be drinking with the goal of getting drunk in mind (wink-wink). Instead, I envision buckling up and bracing myself for the long and meandering roads of wine country under the watchful gaze, generosity and guidance of my divine Three Graces.

China increases medal haul at Decanter World Wine Awards

Among the top winners was Chateau Reifeng-Auzias in Shandong province which won the Regional Trophy for Red Middle, Far East & Asia under £10 for its Cabernet 2010, with the same producer taking Silver for its Syrah 2010.

Reifeng-Auzias is a joint venture between Domaine Auzias in Cabardès in the south of France and wine lovers Wu Feng and his wife Mei Ling, who run an oil company in China.

Last year, Chinese wines won 11 medals, with the Jia Bei Lan 2009 from He Lan Qing Xue in Ningxia province in northern China winning the Red Bordeaux Varietal Over £10 International Trophy.
This year Chinese wines won one Gold medal, two Silver, 10 Bronze and five Commended.
Ningxia, in northwest China, is regarded as one of the country’s most promising wine regions, along with Shandong province, China’s major winemaking region, which has some 10,000ha of vines and where Chateau Lafite has established a vineyard.
All the Chinese wines at this year’s Decanter World Wine Awards come from the winemaking regions: Inner Mongolia, Hebei province, which neighbours Shandong, and Shanxi.
The other Silver medal was won by Leirenshou 2009, a Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot blend from Ningxia.
China’s long-established Grace Vineyard in Shanxi won five medals, as did wines from Great Wall, China’s largest wine company, owned by state conglomerate Cofco.
The majority of winning wines are Cabernet blends, but the list includes a Reserve Traminer 2010 from Château Sun God – part of Great Wall – in Hebei, Domaine Helan Mountain’s Reserve Pinot and Reserve Merlot, a Chardonnay and the white grape Dragon Eye, both from Great Wall.
Domaine Helan Mountain, whose reds won this year, last year won awards for two white wines: Silver for its Classic Chardonnay 2008 and Bronze for its Premium Collection Riesling.
Decanter publishing director Sarah Kemp said China’s continuing success at the DWWA ‘yet again confirms that it is a country to watch. We are just beginning to see a glimpse of its potential.’

Branding key to Portuguese progress

Portugal needs to prioritise stronger branding for its wines, regions and grape varieties, concluded a UK trade panel in a discussion hosted by ViniPortugal at this year’s London International Wine Fair.
According to off-trade data analysts Nielsen, Portuguese wine sales still account for less than one percent of the UK market.
Identifying elements holding Portugal back in the UK, Danny Cameron, director of specialist Portuguese importer Raymond Reynolds, stressed: “the country has to be better at creating commercial brands which are relevant to the markets where they are sold.”
He also urged importers and producers to “get closer to sommeliers and independent retailers to mobilise their ability to hand sell these wines – not a lot of people are going to come in looking for Portuguese wine.”
To illustrate this point, Joan Torrents, wine buyer for UK pub group Mitchells & Butlers, highlighted a survey carried out by the company across 20,000 customers in its 200 Vintage Inns outlets. When asked about wine buying preference in relation to country, customer responses placed Portugal well outside the top 10.
“It’s great to have a wine you love, but if it doesn’t bring customers in then it’s no good,” he summarised of Portugal’s failure to win listings in all but two outlets in the 1,600-strong Mitchells & Butlers UK pub portfolio.
In addition to stressing the need for Portugal to strengthen its commercial brands, Cameron argued for better “sub-branding” of the country’s grape varieties and regions.
“The Douro is now the most famous region in Portugal, but after that the consumer has absolutely no awareness whatsoever,” he argued. With 98% of UK visitors to Portugal going to the Algarve, Cameron also called on ViniPortugal to work more closely with the country’s tourism and gastronomy organisations to create “a more cultural experience for the consumer.”
Describing Touriga Nacional as “a fantastic grape variety,” Cameron nevertheless noted: “outside the confines of the London International Wine Fair, no one’s heard of it.”
As for one of the country’s other major varieties, Cameron pointed to the confusion and generated by a grape called Tinta Roriz in the north, Aragones in the south and Tempranillo in the rest of the world.
Voicing support to Portugal’s indigenous varieties, Torrents observed: “It’s about taking the grapes they have and just shouting about it. 20 years ago no one had heard of Prosecco. Get one, get behind it and get on with it.”
In summary, Cameron stressed the importance for Portugal of building familiarity of its unfamiliar regions or varieties, using the popularity of Rioja as an example as he remarked: “Even if people don’t know what it means, it creates confidence and especially important is that they know how to pronounce it. We now spend as much time training people in pronunciation as all the technical detail.”
In response to these comments, Nuno Mendes, marketing director for ViniPortugal, agreed: “We have to speak a little louder in the market.” However, as a counterbalance to the modest picture painted by Nielsen, Mendes pointed to his country’s export figures as he reported: “In the last three years Portugal’s UK exports have doubled.”
Attributing this growth largely to the UK independent and on-trade sectors, Mendes also set this performance within the broader context of Portugal’s 22% growth in wine sales to the European Union, with a 21% uplift outside the EU.
Nick Oakley, director of specialist Portuguese importer Oakley Wines, also painted an upbeat picture of the country’s progress within the UK “across all sectors” during the last year alone.
Highlighting four new lines taken by Tesco for its premium own label Finest range, Oakley also pointed to the decision by independent merchant Tanners to introduce an own label Douro wine, of which 900 cases were pre-sold. “Portugal is really taking off,” he observed.
