New Bollinger bottle to reduce oxidation rate

The new packaging was inspired by a bottle of Bollinger from 1846 found in the company’s cellars, and will be used across the entire range, starting with the Brut NV Special Cuvée.
Speaking at the launch, Bollinger CEO Jérôme Philippon told the drinks business that the switch was motivated by a desire “to develop a unique and authentic bottle for Bollinger”.
“My objective is to further the differentiation of Bollinger: our taste is different and our bottle shape should be different, and unique to us,” he added.
He also explained that the new shape had a “side benefit”.
This is connected to the bottle’s slightly broader base and narrower neck, which ensures there is a reduced oxygen contact with the Champagne compared to a standard bottle.
This change should mean that oxidation of the Champagne in the bottle will take place at a slightler slower rate, which, Jérôme believes, will be somewhere between the rate for a standard bottle and a magnum.
Indeed, the new bottle’s appearance makes it look like a scaled down magnum, and Jérôme pointed out that the ratio of the new bottle’s diameter at the neck to the diameter at the base is closer to a magnum than it is to a standard bottle (see figures below).
Nevertheless, despite the bottle’s slighly broader base, it still fits in the same gift carton and Bollinger promised it won’t effect merchandising.

Wine Notes: Piedmont producers share vat of knowledge

If there’s a Portland zeitgeist manual somewhere, it’s got to include a page (I’d say somewhere after “cycling” but maybe before “knitting”) on our predilection for Italian wines. And that love is most evident in our tendency to zealously collect the great reds of Piedmont: Barolo and Barbaresco. From Wizer’s Oswego Foods to Liner & Elsen, you can find Stumptowners far and wide salivating over bottles from La Spinetta, Angelo Gaja and the like.

When a group of Italian vintners came through town recently to pour for the trade, I snagged three of Piedmont’s most interesting producers to ask them some questions about their craft as part of my ongoing quest to discover what makes their wines so appealing to us.

If you’re new to Barolo and Barbaresco, you should know that both are made from nebbiolo. When grown in vineyards near their respective villages, in the hillsides overlooking the town of Alba, this grape makes a soul-moving red, redolent of tobacco, licorice, dried leaves and sweet chocolate.

The following three are producers you should know. And even if you are already an aficionado, you’ll enjoy reading about what makes these guys tick.

Their responses have been edited for length and clarity. The pity is, you can’t hear their glorious Italian accents.

The boundary-pushing classic: Luca Currado, Vietti
It may be a historic family producer of Barolo, but Vietti has always rocked the boat. For example: Beginning in 1970, a group of artist friends of the Currado-Vietti family began painting original works, often depicting animals, inspired by each wine. The precursors to the now-ubiquitous “critter labels,” these images shocked a wine market accustomed to labels printed with nothing more than standard black script. Today, Vietti’s labels continue to be among the most beautiful in the world. And the wines? To die for.

Your father, Alfredo Currado, married your mother, Luciana Vietti, in 1957 and became the winemaker for Vietti. Then, in 1961, he was the first in Barolo to release single-vineyard bottlings. How did that come about?

You really have to go back two generations. In 1870, there were two Vietti brothers. The eldest, my great-grandfather, became an engineer in Torino, then like many Italians at that time, he left Italy and spent 35 years in America, in Boston. Then in early 1910, his brother in Italy who was managing the family vineyard passed away. So my family came back from America to work in the vineyard and take care of the family business. Now, my great-grandfather had traveled overseas and was much more open-minded. He understood the meaning of the word terroir and the importance of biodiversity. So he began cherry-picking the best grand cru (or the most prestigious) vineyards in the Barolo region. This was very unusual at that time. Now — thanks to my great-grandfather — of the 20 grand crus of the region, we own parts of 15. So in 1961, my father said, “We have all these great vineyards; why don’t we start to vinify them all separately and see, really, what they show?”

And in 1967, your father was the first to start bottling the flavorful traditional white grape of Barolo, arneis, on its own as a dry table wine.

Yes. In the mid ’60s, my father and mother were looking to make a white wine. They felt that if a variety had been planted in our region since Roman times, it must be there for a reason. But arneis was being made in a sweet style, almost like moscato, or blended with leftover pints of nebbiolo after harvest to make a simple rosé. It was called “il vin de la suocera” (the wine for the mother-in-law). I am sorry, but it was not really a very good wine. There were just a few vines, here and there, in the middle of the nebbiolo vineyards. My father wanted to make a wine with a little less residual sugar, like a fine German riesling. He collected the grapes from 55 different growers; some only picked just one basket, because the variety had almost disappeared. Then, by an error, the fermentation went totally dry. My father was very disappointed. He left it in the tank all winter, on the lees. And then in the springtime, the wine journalist Veronelli came to the winery to taste the new vintages. He said, ‘What is that? … Oh, let me try!” My father said, “No, no, it is a bad experiment.” But then he took a carafe and said, “OK, let’s try an aperitif before lunch.” And the wine was fantastic! He planted the very first vineyard in 1968; all the growers took cuttings from our vineyards, then the university selected clones from our vineyards, and now today it is one of the most popular foreign varieties.

(Note: The Ponzi family here in Oregon are longtime friends of the Currado family; so for a fun side-by-side tasting, try the 2011 Vietti Roero Arneis alongside the 2011 Ponzi Willamette Valley Arneis; $23 and $25, respectively; E&R Wine Shop, Pastaworks NW (City Market), Zupan’s Burnside and Lake Grove.)

You are considered to be a Barolo producer in the traditional style. Knowing all that you know about winemaking, why do you use old-fashioned techniques in the cellar?

For us, the vineyard has always been more important than who is making the wine. I think it would be arrogant, egocentric, even stupid to impose your ego, your own modern style, on a historical vineyard — like Lazzarito, Brunate, Rocche or Villero — that has been known for 300 or 400 years to make a great wine. When I worked my first harvest in ’88, I was a young winemaker. I had studied in France and California; I used a lot of scientific analysis to understand the wine. And then, as time passed, I realized this is all (hogwash). For sure, some analysis is important, but only a very small amount. Wine is made, for me, with your eyes, your nose, your tongue, your stomach. You need to feel it.

Is “Wine on Tap” a More Sustainable, Drinkable Alternative?

An innovation in wine drinking is emerging in California restaurants: wine on tap. Wine served from a keg is not a new concept; it has a long-standing history in Europe. But here in the United States, wine on tap has been brought to the market and failed – more than once; first in the 1970s, then twice again in the 1980s. This time, however, the concept is sticking; wine kegs are opening up a new market for wineries and rejuvenating the wine industry. Kegged wine has multiple advantages for both the restaurant and the winery. These advantages are environmental, quality related, and economic.
Environmentally, the benefits of kegging wine are clear. The bottling process is extremely resource intensive and includes bottles, corks, foils, labels, boxes and pallets. Kegs eliminate tons of packaging, and are reusable for 20+ years. Each standard sized, 19.5L keg, holds 26 bottles worth of wine. Also, wines sold by the glass account for up to 80% of wine sold in restaurants, which equates to approximately 600 million bottles per year. If 10% of that was served from a keg, that would save 60 million bottles yearly. Since only about 27% of glass is recovered for recycling, this would divert millions of bottles from landfills. Furthermore, kegs lessen transported wine’s weight, which accounts for one-third to one-half of the industry’s transportation carbon emissions.
Kegs keep wine tasting like it should. When a keg is tapped, the contents become pressurized by an inert gas, which prevents oxygen from ever touching the wine, and therefore eliminates the waste that comes with serving wines by the glass. And since the wine is served at a consistent level of ideal quality, wine on tap safeguards the promise of restaurants and wineries having more faithful, repeat customers.
Economically, kegging wine makes sense, too. Bottling is extremely costly, as all the resources required in the process must be purchased and are used only once. Kegs result in savings of about 25–30% for wineries when compared to the equivalent amount of wine in bottles. Restaurants that serve wine on tap can enjoy 25% higher profit margins than selling wine by the glass from bottles. Due to wastes being eliminated with kegged wine, restaurants can capitalize on even higher profit margins by offering more respectable, higher-end wines by the glass.
There have been many hurdles to the success of wine on tap, but many have now been overcome. One such hurdle is the negative perception consumers once had of wine from a keg. But as better-known wineries adopt the practice of kegging their wines, such as Au Bon Climat and Qupé, two highly respected wineries in the industry, the wine drinking public is realizing wine in a keg does not mean low quality. And certainly, not all wines are candidates for being kegged, such as those that benefit from aging in a bottle, so bottles will not be replaced anytime soon. But wines that are packaged when ready to drink are perfect candidates, and these represent about 90% of all wines produced. So the next time you go out to eat, and you see wine on tap being served, don’t shy away. Take advantage of the quality, economical, and environmental benefits wine on tap provides. Cheers!

Bordeaux 2011 Prices Cut as Much as 45% as Lafite Demand Cools

May 22 (Bloomberg) — Top Bordeaux 2011 wines including Chateau Lafite-Rothschild and Chateau Cos d’Estournel are selling for between 30 percent and 45 percent below recent vintages after investment demand for the exceptional 2009s and 2010s sapped buyers’ appetite for less-powerful new clarets.
First-growth Lafite is being quoted at $8,410 a case on London-based wine exchange Liv-ex, 41 percent below 2010 and 45 percent down from the 2009s. Second-growth Cos d’Estournel, its close neighbor, is at $1,680 a case for the latest vintage, 45 percent down from the 2010s and 62 percent below 2009.
Asian demand for Bordeaux is becoming more selective while European and American buyers, still struggling with prices for the 2009s and 2010s, are eyeing cheaper back vintages and are less willing to pay premiums for wines still needing a decade or more in bottle, which critics including Robert Parker say fall short of the overall quality reached in the previous two years. Recession in Europe and weak global growth, combined with tumbling bank bonuses, are also driving the market lower.
“Coming into the 2011s, there is more uncertainty,” Michael Saunders, managing director of Bibendum Wine Ltd. in London, said during a tasting at Lord’s cricket ground. “The vintage isn’t being as widely lauded as the 2010s. There needs to be a real reason for people to buy 2011s at this stage.”
American Thirst

Pierre Lurton, director of top Sauternes producer Chateau d’Yquem and Chateau Cheval Blanc in Saint Emilion, said he saw more English and American buyers and fewer Asians among the 2,000 visitors to Cheval Blanc during the en primeur campaign to sample wines that won’t be bottled for another two years.
“It’s a vintage for Europe and for America,” Lurton said. “The price decrease of between 30 percent and 45 percent is normal. It’s not a speculative vintage, 2011, like 2010 and 2009. It’s a vintage for the traditional consumer.”
A warm, unusually dry spring followed by a cool summer made it a tough year to ripen grapes consistently, making the timing of the harvest particularly critical. Christian Seely, director of Pauillac second-growth Chateau Pichon-Longueville, said that “for now maybe the 2011 is slightly in the shadow of its very illustrious predecessors, but put it in the context of the last 10 years and this is a very serious vintage.”
London merchants said demand exists for the new vintage at lower prices, and price cuts have generated sales.

Consumer Vintage

Parker, writing in the Wine Advocate following tastings in March, said “this is the type of vintage where the producers should price low and sell as quickly as possible, giving consumers something to get excited about.”
Chateau Pontet-Canet, a Pauillac fifth-growth that is a close neighbor to both Lafite and Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, went on sale in London at 720 pounds ($1,160) a case, 37 percent below the level at which its 2010 wines are quoted on Liv-ex and 56 percent down from its 2009s.
“We sold out within two hours, and had demand for a third more,” Alfred Tesseron, owner of Pontet-Canet, said in London. “I could have priced it higher, but I am working for the long term.” London merchants agreed.
“It came out at a good price and it’s the first wine that’s really kicked,” said Saunders. “We’ve sold a lot of Pontet-Canet.”
First-growth Chateau Margaux released its wines at 3,800 pounds a case for the U.K. market, down 45 percent from current Liv-ex prices for its 2010 and 48 percent lower than 2009, while Chateau Lynch-Bages, a Pauillac fifth-growth, went on sale at 750 pounds, down 27 percent from last year.

Cheaper Giscours

Chateau Giscours, a third-growth from Margaux, pitched its 2011 at 320 pounds a case for London buyers, down 25 percent from its 2010, while Chateau Batailley, also a Pauillac fifth- growth, went on sale at 250 pounds, down 15 percent from 2010.
A significant driver of lower prices has been producers’ desire to hold on to traditional buyers in Europe and the U.S. after four years in which much of the focus has been on demand coming from China and other parts of Asia, dealers said.
The abolition of wine duties in Hong Kong in 2008 coincided with the collapse of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. that year, resulting in a boost to Asian demand just as the U.S. and European markets suffered a setback.
Auction sales indicate Asian collectors are shifting their attention away from Bordeaux first-growths toward less well- known clarets and rarer Burgundies, as well as wines from other regions. Bordeaux producers are watching the trend closely.
“Pichon-Baron is probably 20 percent to 25 percent in Asia and no more, and I’m quite happy with that sort of figure,” Seely said. “We’re not dependent on the Asian market in any way. If we were to go to 50 percent or 60 percent of our sales in Asia, which could easily happen, you would be starving your traditional market, and that would be dangerous.”
Bibendum’s Saunders agreed that Bordeaux needs to maintain the global balance of its market as it prices the 2011 vintage.
“To put all your chips on China is probably a big call,” he said. “It might be a lucrative call short-term, but they’ve got to look after their traditional markets.”

Winemakers taste, judge, discuss Napa Valley’s ‘artisan wines’

A tasting and discussion of “artisan wines” from Napa Valley set off an explosion of conversation between members of the St. Helena Star/Napa Valley Vintners Tasting Panel who met last week at the Culinary Institute of America, Greystone.
At the outset of discussions, the very definition of “artisan” was challenged. Brett DeLeuze of ZD Wines said he associates artisan winemaking more with home winemaking. DeLeuze does not see “artisan” as a positive term and said the goal of ZD is to produce world-class, not artisan, wines.
As the definition of “artisan” was explored, the majority of panelists agreed that artisan winemaking could be synonymous to labor-intensive, or “hand-crafted” wines. It also could be used by a winery making 100 or 30,000 cases; size was not relevant in and of itself, many contended.
Regardless of the term used, Kristen Belair of Honig Winery likened the pursuit of artisan or “fine” winemaking to a connection with a place — people having a connection to the product and understanding the source of the ingredients. Winemaking buzzwords such as “wild yeast” and “whole cluster fermentation” are used by wineries as a way to tell their story, to show their connection and attention to detail in making their product.
So lively was the conversation, it was evident the topic struck a note with the winemaking panelists. One sensed the discussion could have gone on forever, much like those meaning-of-life talks that go on all night in college where the partakers are surprised to find the sun coming up.
What was agreed upon by everyone on the panel was that a tasting of artisan wines from Napa Valley would necessitate a tasting of almost every single Napa Valley wine. As one of the great wine capitals of the world, Napa Valley uses, explores and re-examines winemaking techniques (that some may call “artisan”) in their pursuit of making the very best wines.
With an understanding that fine winemaking was being discussed, and trying to avoid the term “artisan” for fear of another round of dictionary definitions, a number of winemaking techniques were briefly discussed. These techniques are often used to denote attention to detail and fine winemaking, although surely each of these procedures could in turn be disputed or discussed at length by the winemaking members of the panel.
For some wineries, the use of native, or wild, yeast is important to producing fine wines. These yeasts pre-exist in the vineyard or in the winery cellar and their proponents say they provide a further expression of the growing site on the wine.
Other wineries use whole-cluster fermentation. This process requires putting whole grape bunches, stems and all, into a tank for fermentation, with no prior crushing or de-stemming. Those who use it do so to produce fruit-driven wines.
“Unfiltered” and “unfined” wines are other favorite descriptors among some Napa Valley wineries. However, John Skupny from Lang & Reed challenged the use of these terms, asking, “How can you undo something you have not done?” Panelists laughed in agreement, as John went on to use the terms “nonfiltered” and “nonfined” (no fining process used). Proponents of nonfiltered and nonfined wines say this is a gentler way to produce wine while also keeping the depth of natural flavors that exist in the wine.
Regardless of the techniques that a winery chooses, it became apparent that the goal is the same for the great majority of Napa Valley winemakers: to produce the best wines in the world. To do so, these winemakers are not satisfied to follow a set recipe and churn out wine each year. They prod, they explore, they re-examine techniques in their fervent pursuit of greatness.
With that, the panel examined the wines submitted by Napa Valley Vintner members for the tasting and found these to be their favorites:
• Jarvis 2008 Will’s Science Project ($105). This cabernet franc was aged in small (110-liter) barrels and only 400 cases were produced. Will Jarvis, son of the winery owners, made the first batch of this wine for his eighth-grade science experiment. When it was tried 10 years later, it was so delicious that the winery made a second batch in the same way and added this wine as a new product for the market.
• La Jota Winery 2009 Cabernet Franc, Howell Mountain ($75). The La Jota cabernet franc vineyard was planted back in 1976 and was grafted onto St. George rootstock, which resists phylloxera. Hand-crafted at each step, the wine is also not fined or filtered. Complex flavors with rich black fruits made this a popular wine with panelists.
• Alpha Omega Winery, ERA, 2009 Red Blend ($195). Wild yeasts were used for this 80 percent cabernet sauvignon wine, as well as barrel fermentation. Winemakers Jean Hoefliger and Michel Rolland have created a big, lush wine; panelists appreciated its rich red fruits and silky mouthfeel.
• Franciscan Estate, 2010 Chardonnay, Carneros ($40). This wine was produced with wild yeasts. Panelists loved its vivid fruitiness, and its gentle handling of oak. While having a nice richness on the palate, the wine was called graceful and elegant. This is a beautifully produced wine.
• Elyse Winery, 2007 Grenache, Carneros ($37). Whole clusters were fermented to make this favored wine, but what really captured the panelists’ attention was that dry grapevine canes were steeped in the must. Winemaker Mike Trotta explained that the technique was devised from an old Rhone Valley procedure, and enhances the aromas of the wine, adding white pepper and a nice smokiness. The canes are chopped into small pieces, toasted and put into cheesecloth sachets, which are steeped into the open-top fermenters. This wine has a beautiful nose of rich fruits, floral and spice leading to a rich, delicious wine on the palate.
• Oakville Ranch Vineyards, 2010 Field Blend ($38). This wine was made by fermenting zinfandel, petite verdot, primitivo, and petite syrah all together (co-fermentation). Panelists appreciated that the wine emulates the time in Napa Valley history when different grapes were all planted together and fermented together, creating what are called “field blends.” The wine was also favored for its expressive aromas and flavors.

Not all private labels are alike

When I was a young buck wine merchant, back in the day, I used to look forward to visits from John Avery, of Avery’s of Bristol, an English wine broker and negociant. A “negociant” is someone who buys wine from someone else and then bottles it under his own label.
Being a negociant is a very old and noble profession in Europe, begun in the years when winemakers weren’t bottling and shipping businesses too. A negociant was a wine’s necessary link to a family’s table.
Avery would always show me a slew of reds from Burgundy, each with labels that simply said “Avery’s Bourgogne Rouge.” In order to distinguish one Bourgogne Rouge from another, Avery had given them all magical monikers, such as Cardinal Richelieu or Eminence de Cluny.
Avery swore the wine inside was a lot more than mere Bourgogne Rouge. “Cardinal Richelieu is declassified Gevrey-Chambertin; he is, Bill.”
Was he? I had no idea. All I knew is that the wine was superlative red Burgundy and instead of selling for $75, as a good Gevrey-Chambertin would, “Cardinal Richelieu” went home with my many happy customers for just $20.
I trusted John Avery; my customers trusted me. Everyone went to bed with a smile.
Many John Averys abound today; well, lots of John Avery types. They buy wine from someone else and label it as their own. Such wines are everywhere, behind the “private labels” at Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and Costco. They’re brandished on online “wine clubs” such as wsjwine.com, zagatwine.com or vinesse.com where you can buy six or a dozen “richly rewarding wines” delivered to your door monthly for “one low price.”
All the wines, both in the stores and on the sites, claim to be “expertly selected,” as I am sure they are. You can get your money back “if any wine ever fails to delight,” as I am sure you can.
But you or I have no idea ahead of time, before whipping out the credit card at the store or boldly going into cyberspace, if anything behind the label is really, truly, actually any good.
We need our John Averys. (My friend the John Avery died of a heart attack in March.) I have a couple John Averys to recommend to you. I trust them; so can you.
Since 2001, Cameron Hughes has sold wine under his name (and some spinoffs such as Hughes Wellman or Zin Your Face). His portfolio, widely distributed across the country in stores such as Costco, Sam’s Club and Whole Foods and from his website chwine.com, offers wines from both hemispheres and several countries.
A second negociant label, Boston-based 90+ Cellars, isn’t distributed as widely, but it’s gaining in retail outlets outside its primary market of the Northeast U.S.
These two new-age negociants sell wine that they buy on the spot market (that is, already finished wine that would otherwise sell under a winery’s own label). In addition, Hughes “takes up excess capacity,” he says, “at wineries or with grape growers” and, employing two winemakers, crafts wine as a “virtual winery” at diverse cellars around the world before bottling it behind one of his labels.
The great lure of wine from these two sellers is, as it was with Avery’s of Bristol, the spread between the price you’d pay for the wine as it would sell from its own place of origin and the price Hughes or 90+ Cellars charges for it. The difference is always substantial.

Harvesting the years of sunshine

YOUNG, smart, articulate, Michelle Terry proudly describes herself as a ”brand nerd”. Since joining the corporate world in the mid 1990s as a graduate at Anderson Consulting, her working life has revolved around brands of some description, face creams, beer, gifts, homewares, she’s done it all – and now it’s wine.
Her extensive CV in brand strategy – stretching more than 15 years and including a stint at British retailer Marks & Spencer – should serve her well. These days selling wines is as much about selling a lifestyle or a category than the grapes themselves and, while all wines want to be a brand, many are just a label.
”I get very passionate about whatever I am working on, I just like creating things and thinking about how they will impact a consumer’s life, creating growth plans and then watching them deliver.

”Thinking about new ways to deliver innovation, can happen in financial services as well as wine.”
As the new managing director at Lindeman’s, Terry reports directly to Treasury Wines Estates boss David Dearie, and is responsible for the juggernaut wine brand as well as the other giant in the former wine portfolio owned by Foster’s, sparkling wine Yellowglen.
Under the new organisational structure put in place by Dearie last year, Terry is also responsible for several smaller labels – Great Western, Devil’s Lair, Fifth Leg and Rothbury. But it is Lindeman’s and Yellowglen that will take up most of her attention and time.
Unlike some wine reviewers, and many wine snobs, Terry does not run away or retreat in horror from the ”sunshine in a bottle” tag that has become synonymous with Australian wine, especially chardonnay, and which has made Australian wine so popular with US and British drinkers.
”I think the consumer is looking for that, sunshine in a bottle, and that’s part of the reason for them coming back to great quality Australian wine, which is led by Lindeman’s,” Terry says.
She views it as a handy way of engaging consumers, and once they have the Lindeman’s portfolio before them, sell them other styles and varieties that are a world away from what drinkers may have downed in the 1970s and 1980s.
”My mandate is to make sure we keep on delivering on that, and we keep on growing, expanding into new markets and think about what else can the brand offer. Because it is an incredibly trusted brand and people will move into other parts of the brand if you introduce them, and other propositions.”
And she has big plans for Lindeman’s. On the cards is a launch in the US of its new Early Harvest label over the next 12 months, a new variety of wine that could be a big hit with people who like to watch their weight and their calories.
Early Harvest is a growing collection of reds, whites and sparkling – seven styles in all – that use flavour ripe grapes harvested from early ripening regions in south-eastern Australia to produce a wine that is 25 per cent lighter in alcohol and calories.
Early Harvest has been a huge hit in Australia since it was launched five years ago, and is appealing especially to an older demographic that enjoys drinking wine but also wants to keep an eye on the waistline – and are less enthusiastic about a hangover the next day.
”The core demographic is 40-plus and people looking to have a full lifestyle. They talk about it as a benefit of being lighter, and there are also people who buy it quite frankly because they are calorie counters.”
Terry, who recently took up marathon running and completed her first half-marathon, has big hopes for Early Harvest in the US, where lighter alcoholic beverages are making a huge splash, such as the Skinnygirl range of cocktails which is backed by a reality TV star and are proving amazingly popular.
”It’s a macro trend in general,” says Terry, ”and we have seen it in adjacent categories. For example, like those who lean more to better organic food stuffs; and in the beer market, that’s where the inspiration comes from. Consumers do say, ‘I like to look after myself’.
”And I think there are enough similarities and macro trends between places like the US and the UK that will see that, again, Skinnygirl margarita for example is going nuts in the US, it’s a phenomenon, so there is definitely a category fit play, certainly an industry there.”
And it seems it is not only in America that people, especially female drinkers, are trending towards lighter alcoholic beverages. The fad is also gaining traction in the biggest market of them all – China.
”This is a global trend. It’s interesting. I’ve been digging into this thinking about where we take this, and you can even move into markets like China. There has been market research in China and a survey showed one-third of them are looking for a lighter alcohol product; so I think there is enormous potential in this range.”
But before China there is the US. Lindeman’s has form when it comes to the US. It’s actually an unlikely star in America, unlikely because here Lindeman’s is typically the wine you get at a wedding along with a choice of chicken or beef, and is priced near the bottom of the totem pole at wine stores.
But its performance in North America and the nordic countries has seen it shine of late. For the first half of 2011-12, when Treasury Wine Estates saw declining wine volumes in the Americas, its Lindeman’s labels had double-digit growth, recording volume increases of just under 15 per cent. In March Lindeman’s grew more than 17 per cent and in the past 13 weeks more than 10 per cent.
Its pricing in the Americas ranges from $4.99 for the bottom end of the label to much higher, especially for its popular Bin range and some of its premium wines.
”The centre of gravity is in the heartland of our Bin series and people think it’s fantastic value for money, great everyday wine with good consistency and character. We are very pleased with that position in the market and the fact is it continues to grow.”
Interestingly, Terry, a Queensland girl who now calls Melbourne home, says the Lindeman’s range is ”significantly beating” Yellow Tail, owned by Casella, the incredibly popular family-owned wine group from Griffith in New South Wales which exploded from nowhere more than 10 years ago and is now the biggest-selling imported wine in the US.
It’s not just in the US that Lindeman’s pricing and flavour profile have hit a chord with customers. Lindeman’s chardonnay is the No.1 selling chardonnay in Canada, it’s pinot grigio is No.1 in the Netherlands, while other wines are top selling in Scandinavia.
Although Lindeman’s takes up a lot of her time, Terry is also responsible for Yellowglen, a wine empire within itself, with a 19 per cent share of the sparkling wine market in Australia and one of the country’s most recognised brands.
Yellowglen, like other sparkling wines, has come under intense competition from Champagne over the past two years as the strong Australian dollar and an oversupply of Champagne in North America and Europe has seen the real French bubbly flood into Australia, and at record low prices.
With Champagne prices for well recognised, sometimes premium, brands falling by more than 25 per cent, some drinkers have switched allegiance from Aussie sparkling to the French original.
”Yes, there certainly is competitive pressure coming from Champagne. But the good thing about Yellowglen is that it’s an enormous powerhouse brand here in terms of relative market share,” says Terry.
In fact, Yellowglen’s value as a percentage share of total bottled wine is 3.8 per cent making it the No.2 brand in bottled wine in Australia, behind Jacob’s Creek.
”It’s very important for us to defend our space as Australia’s leading sparkling house.”
She has plenty of time to mull over her strategic plans for the key wine arm of Treasury Wine Estates, and pounding the pavement during her marathon training is a great time for reflection – not to mention the rigour of vigorous competition.
”You always see people zooming past you like gazelles, and you think, ‘how do they do that?’ I was just happy to finish [my first half-marathon] and want to keep that up.”

New packaging offers wine to go for picnic season

Enjoying good wine in the great outdoors is fun, but toting glass bottles on the trail is no picnic.
Enter the new crop of alternatively packaged wines in cartons, cans and other trail-ready options.
Sure, for actual hydration you’ll want to tote along water or whatever energy drink you favor. But for that moment when the hike is done, the mountain bike path conquered, or you’re just relaxing and grilling a few steaks on a lazy Sunday, these wines make it easy to blend libations with explorations.
As Brad Day, a wine lover and outdoorsman who runs the outdoor activities website WeekendSherpa.com puts it, “It adds a nice element to sitting back and enjoying the natural surroundings.”
So here are some wines that make good traveling partners.
_ PACK A POUCH
The Climber is billed as “all-terrain wine transport,” and it is. Available in chardonnay or cabernet sauvignon, this wine comes in a foil pouch with a hole punched at the top so it can be clipped to a backpack with a carabiner hook.
It shouldn’t come as a big surprise that The Climber comes from Clif Family Winery founded by Gary Erickson and wife Kit Crawford, the people behind the Clif energy bar. The Climber is widely available and also can be found at the Clif winery tasting room Vela Vino in St. Helena, a popular spot with bicyclists.
The pouch holds the equivalent of two regular bottles and has a suggested retail of $17, so the wine is light on your wallet as well as your pack.
The winery works with the group 1 Percent for the Planet, and 1 percent of Climber sales go to charity, in this case a partnership with Trees for the Future. What to pair with it? Gorp is good, or if you want to go a little more upscale you might try the Smoked Paprika Almonds from the Gary & Kit’s Napa Valley line of snacks.
_ HAVE A CAN-DO ATTITUDE
You may be more used to seeing beer in cans, but there are a few wines available in aluminum. A fun wine to try is Sophia minis from the Francis Ford Coppola winery. This is the winery’s Sophia blanc de blancs sparkling wine that is a blend of pinot noir, sauvignon blanc and muscat, but in a pink 187-milliliter can, complete with a tiny straw (suggested retail $5).
Another option is FLASQ wines from JT Wines. These are sold in 375-milliliter aluminum half bottles that chill quickly and are recyclable. Available in chardonnay, merlot and a cuvee blanc (a white blend), they come with a suggested retail of $5.99 to $7.99.
Finally… a wine you can drop.
_ BET ON A BOX
Several wines are available in cartons and a reliable line is Bandit wines from Napa Valley winemaker Joel Gott. Available in several varietals and blends, including sangria, the wines are available in 1-liter or 500-milliliter boxes and are priced at around $9 for the liter.
Or, if you’re going to be gone for a while or have a crowd with you, you could kick it old-school and go with one of the bag-in-box wines that hold the equivalent of four bottles. Day recalls going for a backpacking trip with friends and toting along some Black Box Wines, one of the pioneers in putting quality wine in a box.
Since every ounce counts when you’re hiking the trails, they disposed of the box and carried only the bag. The hike was hiked. The wine was drunk. And when they were done, they blew the bag back up to make a pillow. Now that’s a versatile varietal.
