Winemakers taste, judge, discuss Napa Valley’s ‘artisan wines’

A tasting and discussion of “artisan wines” from Napa Valley set off an explosion of conversation between members of the St. Helena Star/Napa Valley Vintners Tasting Panel who met last week at the Culinary Institute of America, Greystone.
At the outset of discussions, the very definition of “artisan” was challenged. Brett DeLeuze of ZD Wines said he associates artisan winemaking more with home winemaking. DeLeuze does not see “artisan” as a positive term and said the goal of ZD is to produce world-class, not artisan, wines.
As the definition of “artisan” was explored, the majority of panelists agreed that artisan winemaking could be synonymous to labor-intensive, or “hand-crafted” wines. It also could be used by a winery making 100 or 30,000 cases; size was not relevant in and of itself, many contended.
Regardless of the term used, Kristen Belair of Honig Winery likened the pursuit of artisan or “fine” winemaking to a connection with a place — people having a connection to the product and understanding the source of the ingredients. Winemaking buzzwords such as “wild yeast” and “whole cluster fermentation” are used by wineries as a way to tell their story, to show their connection and attention to detail in making their product.
So lively was the conversation, it was evident the topic struck a note with the winemaking panelists. One sensed the discussion could have gone on forever, much like those meaning-of-life talks that go on all night in college where the partakers are surprised to find the sun coming up.
What was agreed upon by everyone on the panel was that a tasting of artisan wines from Napa Valley would necessitate a tasting of almost every single Napa Valley wine. As one of the great wine capitals of the world, Napa Valley uses, explores and re-examines winemaking techniques (that some may call “artisan”) in their pursuit of making the very best wines.
With an understanding that fine winemaking was being discussed, and trying to avoid the term “artisan” for fear of another round of dictionary definitions, a number of winemaking techniques were briefly discussed. These techniques are often used to denote attention to detail and fine winemaking, although surely each of these procedures could in turn be disputed or discussed at length by the winemaking members of the panel.
For some wineries, the use of native, or wild, yeast is important to producing fine wines. These yeasts pre-exist in the vineyard or in the winery cellar and their proponents say they provide a further expression of the growing site on the wine.
Other wineries use whole-cluster fermentation. This process requires putting whole grape bunches, stems and all, into a tank for fermentation, with no prior crushing or de-stemming. Those who use it do so to produce fruit-driven wines.
“Unfiltered” and “unfined” wines are other favorite descriptors among some Napa Valley wineries. However, John Skupny from Lang & Reed challenged the use of these terms, asking, “How can you undo something you have not done?” Panelists laughed in agreement, as John went on to use the terms “nonfiltered” and “nonfined” (no fining process used). Proponents of nonfiltered and nonfined wines say this is a gentler way to produce wine while also keeping the depth of natural flavors that exist in the wine.
Regardless of the techniques that a winery chooses, it became apparent that the goal is the same for the great majority of Napa Valley winemakers: to produce the best wines in the world. To do so, these winemakers are not satisfied to follow a set recipe and churn out wine each year. They prod, they explore, they re-examine techniques in their fervent pursuit of greatness.
With that, the panel examined the wines submitted by Napa Valley Vintner members for the tasting and found these to be their favorites:
• Jarvis 2008 Will’s Science Project ($105). This cabernet franc was aged in small (110-liter) barrels and only 400 cases were produced. Will Jarvis, son of the winery owners, made the first batch of this wine for his eighth-grade science experiment. When it was tried 10 years later, it was so delicious that the winery made a second batch in the same way and added this wine as a new product for the market.
• La Jota Winery 2009 Cabernet Franc, Howell Mountain ($75). The La Jota cabernet franc vineyard was planted back in 1976 and was grafted onto St. George rootstock, which resists phylloxera. Hand-crafted at each step, the wine is also not fined or filtered. Complex flavors with rich black fruits made this a popular wine with panelists.
• Alpha Omega Winery, ERA, 2009 Red Blend ($195). Wild yeasts were used for this 80 percent cabernet sauvignon wine, as well as barrel fermentation. Winemakers Jean Hoefliger and Michel Rolland have created a big, lush wine; panelists appreciated its rich red fruits and silky mouthfeel.
• Franciscan Estate, 2010 Chardonnay, Carneros ($40). This wine was produced with wild yeasts. Panelists loved its vivid fruitiness, and its gentle handling of oak. While having a nice richness on the palate, the wine was called graceful and elegant. This is a beautifully produced wine.
• Elyse Winery, 2007 Grenache, Carneros ($37). Whole clusters were fermented to make this favored wine, but what really captured the panelists’ attention was that dry grapevine canes were steeped in the must. Winemaker Mike Trotta explained that the technique was devised from an old Rhone Valley procedure, and enhances the aromas of the wine, adding white pepper and a nice smokiness. The canes are chopped into small pieces, toasted and put into cheesecloth sachets, which are steeped into the open-top fermenters. This wine has a beautiful nose of rich fruits, floral and spice leading to a rich, delicious wine on the palate.
• Oakville Ranch Vineyards, 2010 Field Blend ($38). This wine was made by fermenting zinfandel, petite verdot, primitivo, and petite syrah all together (co-fermentation). Panelists appreciated that the wine emulates the time in Napa Valley history when different grapes were all planted together and fermented together, creating what are called “field blends.” The wine was also favored for its expressive aromas and flavors.

America’s most expensive restaurants to BYOB

Yet, in order to BYOB at some of the best restaurants in the country, and particularly in cities like New York, you had better be prepared to tack on a sizeable sum to your bill in the form of a corkage fee. At celebrated and pricey eateries like Per Se and Masa, for example, BYOB service will cost you nearly $100 — per bottle.
At prices like that, one has to wonder whether it doesn’t just make more sense to order off the restaurant’s undoubtedly well-curated wine list. After all, most establishments discourage or flat-out prohibit customers from bringing in bottles that currently appear on their wine list, so there’s no bargain to be had there.
And while it’s easy to understand why restaurants of such caliber would want diners to choose from the wine lists they have worked so hard to put together, this is a service industry and there can be, also, special circumstances where BYOB is particularly appropriate.
At New York City’s swanky A Voce restaurants, for instance, wine and beverage director Olivier Flosse says, “When we accept that guests can bring wines, we do not charge any corkage. Of course when we accept, it’s only for a very special occasion.” The guests absolutely must call in advance to inquire whether or not their occasion merits bending of the BYOB rules. “One of our guests called me and asked if he could bring some old vintage Bordeaux from his daughter’s birthday year and asked [about] the corkage fee,” says Flosse. “At this time, I told the guests that we are very pleased to break the rule, but the guests had also already ordered a few top bottles from the wine list. We are all here to please guests, but we are a business as well.”
From the moderately pricey to the quite expensive, here are nine restaurants across the country where it’ll cost you to BYOB.
French Laundry, Yountville, Calif.: $75
At Thomas Keller’s famous French Laundry, located in Napa Valley, Calif., each meal is a culinary experience, sometimes taking three to four hours to complete a single service. Here, corkage fees will run you $75 for each bottle of wine — a fact that may be hard to swallow in the heart of California wine country, where lax BYOB opportunities abound. Still insistent on bringing in your own bottles? Call ahead and make sure your wine does not appear on the existing wine list. Duplicates are not allowed in, just like at sister restaurant Per Se in New York.
Adour Alain Ducasse at The St. Regis New York, New York City: $85
Sometimes, exorbitant corkage fees come with posh perks. With the rental of a private wine vault at Adour Alain Ducasse, you’ll pay $85 in corkage fees for each bottle opened. Yearlong memberships to the wine vault program run diners a whopping $2,000, but if you’re a regular at Adour, it may be well worth it: As a wine vault member, diners are afforded tailored tasting experiences crafted by chef Julien Jouhannaud himself. And the vaults are located in the Private Vault Room, an exclusive space that can seat 14. Anyone can purchase a vault membership to store their personal wine collection, and each vault can hold up to 12 bottles in a temperature-controlled environment — perhaps a plus for those in cramped Manhattan apartments. Of the vault users, approximately two customers per week access their own bottles. Interestingly, Adour at The St. Regis in Washington, D.C., does not allow customers to bring in their own bottles.
Per Se, New York City: $90
Perhaps Thomas Keller’s top-rated, ultra-luxe Per Se (well-known for its extravagant nine-course tastings) took notes from its neighbor, Masa, located on the same floor of the Time Warner Center in New York City. The restaurant charges $90 in corkage fees for each 750 milliliter bottle of wine brought in from the outside (the most you can bring in is three). This fee is, of course, in addition to the cost of your multi-course meal, which starts at around $295 per person. Since the award-winning restaurant is well-known for its strong wine cellar and wide range of half-bottle selections, calling ahead and checking to make sure the same bottle does not appear on their lengthy list is a must. At least gratuity is included.
Masa, New York City: $95
Masa is known for its super pricey dinners (be prepared to shell out more than $400 at the sushi bar), a monthlong wait time for reservations, and microscopic (but undeniably delicious) portions of sushi made by sushi guru Masayoshi Takayama, and so shelling out nearly $100 in corkage fees seems to fit in with the larger-than-life experience at Masa. But don’t even think about bringing in a bottle without clearing it with the restaurant first — you’ll want to make sure the bottle isn’t currently on the evolving list.

Pairing Wine and Music

Berkeley, Calif.-based Peter Eastlake curates the wine list for summer music festivals
The summer music festival scene is heating up, and if rock concerts make you think of cheap beer or whiskey in plastic cups, you’re not alone. But if California wine retailer Peter Eastlake has his way, you’ll be pulling corks on some top cuvées instead. For the past four years, Eastlake, 39, the owner of a trio of wine stores in the Bay Area, has curated the wine tent at the massively popular Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco. Now, he’s bringing the show on the road to the Great GoogaMooga, a combo wine, food and music festival organized by the creators of Outside Lands and Bonaroo that will be held in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park on May 19 and 20. The wine side of the festival line-up includes top sommeliers like Aldo Sohm and Paul Grieco and winemakers from Bonny Doon and the Gotham Project, while the music portion includes headliners (and wine lovers) Hall & Oates and the Roots.
Eastlake, who grew up in Philadelphia and credits his wine importer neighbor for getting him into wine, recently spoke with Wine Spectator about how he made the leap from retail to festivals, why wine is ready for the big stage and which bottlings are best with music.
Wine Spectator: How did you get into wine?
Peter Eastlake: I grew up in Philadelphia, and my neighbor was a French wine importer. I was 20 and helping him with his Burgundies. I spent a year living in South Africa when I was in college and that was a fascinating immersive period [with South African wine]. Then when I graduated, I went straight to New York and worked at Morrell’s and then I managed the original Best Cellars on the Upper East Side. After 9/11, I moved to California and was the national buyer at Cost Plus World Market, based in Oakland. Together with my best friend, I opened Vintage Berkeley in North Berkeley in an old water-pumping station.
WS: What are some standout wines from your career?
PE: There was a blizzard in 1993 that shut down all the northeastern cities. I had done a tasting of our Burgundies in Wilmington so I had A.F. Gros Echézeaux and Richebourg—all this stuff open. I went back to my apartment in downtown Philadelphia and was completely snowed in and ended up drinking all of these Burgundies over the next four days. At the age of 22 years old—drinking Richebourg, Echézeaux at any hour because there was nothing else to do—I had a lot of time to think about the glory of the stuff I was drinking.
WS: What brought you to South Africa?
PE: After I had been selling wine in Philadelphia, I lived in Stellenbosch and Cape Town for a year in 1995. I went to the Cape Wine Academy, which was part of the Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery at the time. I took a bunch of different classes there and got familiar with all the wineries there. It was cool because at that point this exciting up-and-coming region had been shut off from the rest of the world—or our world really. All of this newness despite the 400-year lineage of Cape wine. It was formative because I really got the culture of wine and the seasons.
WS: Do you have any personal wine favorites right now?
PE: I love big bottles. Maybe it’s because I’m a short guy? I don’t know … I’m an explorer. I love newness and interesting takes on things. Big bottles are always fun. Whether it’s a big bottle of rosé or a big bottle of Burgundy, I love to put a magnum down on the table and get into it with your closest.
WS: How did you get involved in curating wine for concerts?
PE: When Outside Lands came up, it was exciting because it was a chance to put wine in this live space in front of a huge amount of people. We had 60,000 people last year. I had been close with the guys from SuperFly. When Outside Lands was a year out, one of them said, “I wonder if there’s a role that wine might play?” And I said, “Absolutely, finally! An opportunity to take wine out of the box.” We’re creating a new platform where all of these pleasure points in our life—eating drinking, music—there’s a confluence of them all at this festival.
WS: Do you like music?
PE: Live music, yeah. I’ve always loved live music. I grew up in Philly so we’d go see the Who, the Rolling Stones, U2. The power of that huge collective experience has always had a big impact on me.
WS: It’s pretty rare to get good wine at a concert.
PE: It’s been a beer and whiskey thing. The aesthetic of rock-and-roll doesn’t fit wine. Programming wine in a music space, I constantly think: What is the connectivity between wine and music? We like to listen to music and drink wine, and to me that’s the most primal. There’s the artisan who makes a wine, who kind of resembles the mind of a musician. It’s an interesting thing. Wine and music work well together as a shared sensory experience, but I don’t see it as this winemaker is the new rock star. I think there are winemakers and sommeliers who embody the rock-and-roll aesthetic, but there are wines out there who have shy, quiet people behind them who create some of the most amazing, electric things you’ve ever tasted. So there are a lot of ways of thinking about it.
WS: Are there lots of musicians who like wine?
PE: These young indie bands, they bust their hump traveling around the globe, but more often than not these days, they eat pretty well and take care of themselves. They love wine and jump at it when they see it. At Outside Lands, they’ll bring the musicians over to the tent. Nathan from the Kings of Leon. Colin Meloy from the Decemberists—he’s a big fan of wine. And then a guy like Les Claypool who makes wine. There are a lot of wine-loving musicians.

Dynasty Fine Wines Showcasing Premium “Jue” Cask Collection at VINEXPO Asia-Pacific 2012

China’s leading winemaker Dynasty Fine Wines is premiering a unique new Premium “Jue” Cask Collection of limited edition barrels of wine at VINEXPO Asia-Pacific from May 29-31 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre.
Occupying 36m2 of presentation space at VINEXPO Asia-Pacific 2012, the design of the booth to exhibit this Premium “Jue” Cask Collection is an eye-catching showpiece inspired by the mega wine barrels that the Premium “Jue” Cask Collection will be sold in. The booth is to be divided into two levels with a stylish bar area and separate exhibition area providing a more spacious and contemporary environment. Three cask wines will be showcased in the forefront to allow wine and spirits professionals and media to have a sneak preview and taste of the new collection.
The 225-litre barrels – equivalent to 300 standard 750 ml bottles of wine – are promoted as prestigious gifts for corporations and high-end consumers, or a novel way of serving wine at banquets and special occasions. The name “Jue” is from the ancient Chinese text Yi Jing, which contains the saying: “I have good ‘Jue’ and I shall savour with you. Representing the concept behind Dynasty’s Premium “Jue” Cask Collection – “Jue” is therefore interpreted as to share fine wines with wine lovers. Dynasty’s Premium “Jue” Cask Collection will be showcased in three poetically named categories – Wisdom, Elegance and Imperial.
From the ancient Chinese text, “Imperial” represents the sovereigns descending upon the world – The most prestigious cask of all, Imperial, is blended from premium Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the remarkable vintage of 2003 in Qingtongxia, at the base of the eastern face of Helan Mountain in Ningxia. Quality was enhanced by strict seeding and planting, with production yield limited to 200kg per acre, giving the grapes delicate tannin and a harmonious sugar acidity ratio with a rich colour. Careful production by the winemakers and aging in top-of–the-line new oak barrels for at least 24 months, with temperature and humidity controls for over three years created a wine like a work of art. It is noble, full-bodied with outstanding quality and a silky smooth texture. This wine has aromas of cinnamon, cloves, cocoa and coffee beans. It can be cherished as the highly collectible French Lafite.
“Elegance” is a rare virtue of literati – Elegance was produced from Merlot grapes hand-picked in 2005 from Qingtongxia, at the base of the eastern face of Helan Mountain and the northern foothills of Tianshan Mountain in Xinjiang. This production area is dry and cool in summer. The temperature difference between day and night is marked with adequate light that is ideal for the growth of quality grapes. The Elegance wine was stored in newly constructed French oak barrels for at least 18 months, having an elegant ruby red, with complex aromas of vanilla, blackberry, coffee, roasts and mushroom. The texture is smooth and soft, with a long aftertaste leaving a satisfactory experience.
“Wisdom” comes from a prudent mind that surpasses the superficial – Wisdom features 2007 Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes produced from vineyards on the eastern foot of Helan Mountain in Ningxia, aged for over 18 months in fine French oak barrels, having a bright ruby red, with aromas of ripe grape berries, dried fruit and sweet vanilla smell of oak. These rich flavoured and full-body harmonious wines have a strong and long lasting aftertaste.
“This year marks the 32nd anniversary of the Group’s establishment and it is our pleasure to be exhibiting at this large scale event. To be included in this event is a testament to the Group’s hard work and we look forward to unveiling our best premium cask wines to the international market at this year’s VINEXPO Asia-Pacific, sharing with our guests the fruit of our dedication to excellence,” remarked Mr. Bai Zhisheng, Chairman and Executive Director of Dynasty Fine Wines Group Limited.
At VINEXPO Asia-Pacific 2012 Dynasty Fine Wines will also showcase Chinese wine specifically for retail in the North American markets, to be distributed through The Wine Group (TWG), one of the top three wine companies in the global market.
As well as producing and exporting some of China’s finest wines, Dynasty also works with a number of world renowned wineries from France, Italy, Germany, the USA, Chile and Spain, importing their luxury wines to China with marketing through Dynasty Fine Wine’s expanding distribution network.
To celebrate the official launch of these wines during VINEXPO Asia-Pacifc, Dynasty Fine Wines will be hosting “Tianjin Dynasty International Wine Co., Ltd Gala Cocktail” at Victoria Harbour. Attending winery partners will include J.P. Chenet from France, Henkell Trocken Kardinal from Germany and Santa Helena from Chile.

Napa Valley’s First Dog Tasting Room and a New Breed of Wines

RUTHERFORD — Frenchie Winery, named for and inspired by the beloved French bulldog of Raymond Vineyards proprietor Jean-Charles Boisset, has made its debut in Rutherford.
Located at Raymond Vineyards, Frenchie Winery is one of the few tasting rooms designed exclusively for dogs. In addition, the first two wines in a series bearing the Frenchie label are available for purchase at the winery, FrenchieWinery.com and wine.com. Each wine label depicts Frenchie as a historical figure, including Louis XIV and Napoleon and, soon, Marie Antoinette.
“Frenchie was a gift to my beloved wife,” Boisset said, “to ensure that she would always be in the company of a French gentleman. In fact, Frenchie is the perfect French gentleman: He’s loyal, charming, always up for an adventure and he never talks back. His playful, debonair and aristocratic style is reflected in the winery and the wines.”
According to Boisset, with more than 46 million dog owners in the U.S., Frenchie wanted to ensure that his fellow canines would be well taken care of when their people chose to visit Raymond Vineyards.
Inside, the winery includes five individual kennel spaces featuring specially designed wine barrel dog beds. Above the beds, in the “Gallery of Frenchie” hang canvas portraits depicting Frenchie as historical icons such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Julius Caesar and Marie Antoinette.
Overhead, a “Barkarrat” chandelier lights up a dog friendly tasting bar dispensing water for its guests. An outdoor play area offers canines a view of Frenchie’s bioDOGnamic vineyard, planted to Bordeaux varieties.
The new property also includes a small tasting bar for humans where they can sample Frenchie Wines. A doggie-cam will allow pet lovers to keep an eye on their furry friends while visiting the Raymond Winery main tasting room. Plans are underway for several dog-centric events including mobile pet grooming, adopt-a-pet day and more.
Just released are:
• 2009 Frenchie Napoleon Red Blend – Aromas and flavors of black and red fruit with hints of cassis and subtle oak are unleashed in each glass of this special blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Franc ($30)
• 2009 Frenchie Louis XIV Cabernet Sauvignon- A blend of 61 percent Sonoma County and 39 percent Napa County fruit, this wine has fetching aromas and flavors of blackberries and cocoa with hints of cassis and subtle notes of vanilla. ($30)
Additional wines are planned for launch in the future including a white wine blend, Frenchie Marie Antoinette. For a limited time, a special two-bottle wine duo including three Frenchie-branded tennis balls is available for purchase on wine.com for $49.99. All Frenchie wines are available at FrenchieWinery.com or at the Frenchie Winery at Raymond Vineyards.
“We are moving into the forefront of pet parenting in the digital age and connecting with our wine consumers via social and mobile marketing,” said Boisset. “Frenchie will be unleashing the story and inspiration behind his wines through a series of short videos on FrenchieWinery.com. He will be revealing the life of a rock star dog winemaker and building a community of Frenchie fans on Facebook and Dogbook while seeking out other like-minded friends to share their photos, videos and more.”

Experts predict a rise in wine prices

LOS ANGELES (NBC) – Savor that glass of chardonnay, and appreciate the price tag while you’re at it.
Thanks to a looming grape shortage and higher fuel prices, experts predict prices will rise on domestic wine from the West Coast.
“It’s manufacturing,” said Carolyn Craig, of the Canyon Crest Winery. “You run out of one component, you come to a stop.”
Silicon Valley Bank, a commercial banker to the wine industry, said in its latest “Annual State of the Wine Industry Report” that it expects vintners to raise prices as the supply of grapes declines.
Prices for California wines will be the first to rise, followed by wine from Oregon and Washington State, according to the report.
Grapes aren’t the only factor.
Owners have to consider the cost of getting grape juice to the winery.
“A large component of the costs of acquiring that juice is going to be transportation, so we’re very aware of fuel costs,” Craig said.
So, what’s a wine lover to do?
Experts said if you find something you like, at the price you like, consider stocking up as your own hedge against price increases.

Rare-wine collectors are savvy, competitive guys with a taste for impossible finds. The biggest hoax in history took place right under their noses.

Even at Rudy Kurniawan’s coming-out party in September 2003, there were questionable bottles of wine.
A score of Southern California’s biggest grape nuts had gathered at the restaurant Melisse in Santa Monica that Friday for a $4,800-a-head vertical tasting of irresistible rarities provided by Kurniawan: Pétrus in a dozen vintages, reaching as far back as 1921, in magnums.
Although Pétrus is now among the most famous wines in the world, it gained its exalted status relatively recently; before World War II, it was virtually unheard of, and finding large-format bottles that had survived from the twenties bordered on miraculous. Paul Wasserman, the son of prominent Burgundy importer Becky Wasserman, is something like wine royalty, but before this event, the oldest Pétrus he had tasted was from 1975.
Nonetheless, two bottles left him scratching his head. The 1947 lacked the unctuousness of right-bank Bordeaux from that legendary vintage, and the 1961 struck him as “very young.” He briefly entertained the idea of “possible fakes”—’61 Pétrus in magnum has fetched up to $28,440 at auction—and jotted, in his notes on the ’47, “If there’s one bottle I have serious doubts about tonight, this is it.”
But in the rare-wine world, doubts are endemic; murkiness is built into a product that is concealed by tinted glass and banded wooden cases and opaque provenance and the fog of history. At the same time, the whole apparatus of the rare-wine market is about converting doubt into mystique. Most wealthy collectors want to spend big and drink famous labels, not necessarily ask questions or hear the answers. Guests at tastings don’t want to bite the hand that quenches them. Auctioneers may not want to risk losing consignments by nitpicking ambiguous bottles. Winemakers don’t like to talk about counterfeiting, for fear of the taint. Also, one thing not high on the FBI’s list of investigative priorities: billionaires getting snowed by wine forgers. It’s clear to everyone on this rarefied circuit that wine fraud is rampant. It’s also clear not many insiders feel an urgency to do anything about it.
Wasserman ended up convincing himself that the wines must be legitimate. Another guest who had tasted the ’61 many times said this one was “absolutely consistent” with his experience. And there was nothing suspect about the wines’ appearance. The colors were appropriate; the corks, even those that looked young, were plausible (it was standard historical practice for wines to be recorked). As for the hodgepodge of inks and paper types used for the labels, Wasserman wasn’t qualified to judge. But Kurniawan, usually soft-spoken and reserved, held forth with great assurance, in his lightly accented English, about the variable labeling of old Pétrus. As Wasser-man told a popular online wine board a few days later, “Rudy has become quite an expert on the subject.”
That Kurniawan had assembled such wines, and such winos, and was considered an expert at all about wine in 2003 was extraordinary, considering that just two years earlier he’d been a newbie. But in the moneyed stratosphere of hyperrare collectible wine, merely opening one’s wallet is often lionized as an act of courage or virtue.
Kurniawan has dated his wine epiphany to 2001, when, celebrating his father’s birthday at a restaurant on Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, he drank a 1996 Opus One. Twenty-five at the time and living in the Los Angeles suburb of Arcadia, Kurniawan became enthralled, and was soon combing L.A. for the wine, quickly amassing 200 bottles. He started attending weekly tastings at the Red Carpet, a wine store in Glendale. Early the following year, at a charity auction in Paso Robles, he made a stir when, bidding on a hotly contested lot of the cult California Syrah Sine Qua Non, he simply held his paddle aloft until he won.
By the end of 2002, Kurniawan was on a classic trajectory, graduating from California wines to premier cru Bordeaux. Then he moved on, in time-honored fashion, to the apex of connoisseurship: Burgundy. Wine lovers fall hard for Burgundy. The greatest of its wines are considered singular expressions of their terroir, the region’s complexity challenges even the geekiest geek, and the wines are mostly produced in such tiny quantities that bottle-hunting can be obsessive. Allen Meadows, 33-year Burgundy collector, publisher of the Burghound newsletter, and the premier Burgundy critic in the U.S., says, “As much as I know, there’s ten times I don’t know.” Kurniawan took to it with such zeal that, says Meadows, “I’ve seen very few people learn Burgundy so fast.”
Among other things, Kurniawan was a gifted taster, someone with not only a discerning palate but also a prodigious memory—a taste library in his head. He could peg some wines “double-blind,” deducing their identities without knowing in advance that they were even among the group being served. He was soon making a splash in auction rooms, spending an estimated $1 million a month. He “cornered much of the megamarket,” auctioneer John Kapon would later say. Largely because of Kurniawan’s influence, old-wine prices rose dramatically. In 2002, a bottle of 1945 DRC Romanée-Conti sold for $2,600. Last year, one went for $124,000.

New wine glasses aim to balance “water and fire”

That’s the hope of French luxury crystal glassmaker Baccarat, which recently began sales of its new line of glasses in Hong Kong, where wine imports have remained strong on the back of strong demand from mainland Chinese buyers even amid global economic uncertainty.
“People tend to confuse good wine with alcohol in wine, which is not what we want,” said Bruno Quenioux, technical adviser of the Chateau Baccarat collection of professional wine glasses, which went on sale in France earlier this year.
“What is complicated with wine is to get the balance between the fire and water. Get too much fire in the wine and you lose the message of the water… But if you put too much water in the fire, then the fire is dead.”
The glass has a broad base that evokes the tastevin, a saucer-like cup used by winemakers and sommeliers to taste wines, sloping sides and an unusually narrow lip at the end of a vertical “chimney” that the company says prevents the alcohol from overpowering other aromas since it sinks down when the glass is swirled prior to tasting.
“The main subject in the final stretch should no longer be the alcohol anymore, but the aromas and the bouquet the fine wines have to offer,” Quenioux told Reuters, adding that the new glass made the aroma more subtle.
“You can see the smokiness, some flowers, definitely the glass leads you to have the mineral side of the wine… When you go back to the regular glass, you have rusticity. You have something not so subtle.”
But other glassmakers disagree, saying there is still merit in time-honoured variations tailored to the different wine varieties – variations to which they have given subtle modern twists.
“I think as people start appreciating wine more, that they will appreciate a pinot glass, a cabernet glass, a shiraz glass. They’re all a little bit different,” said Suresh Kanji, a Hong Kong-based distributor for Riedel Crystal, based in Austria.
The ubiquitous Riedel has put efforts into developing different glasses for different varieties through the years and in the 1970s discovered that each separate variety had a specific DNA.
“Based on that DNA, the shape of the glass actually makes the experience for the consumer very, very different,” said Kanji.
“The big bowl – great for red wine. The smaller glasses – good for white wine… Every glass was fine-turned for the specific DNA of what you’re drinking.”
Wine experts agree that given the differences in how “forthcoming” each variety may be, proper handling of the alcohol in fine wines is key.
“Burgundy is very delicate wine, so it needs a larger surface area to release and free its aromas,” said Debra Meiburg, a Master of Wine and wine journalist.
“Burgundy (glasses) comes to quite a narrow lose at the chimney in order to capture the aroma and trap them in the glass.”
And yes, she said, the glass does matter.
“Of course any glass would work. But just as you would prefer not to drink your coffee in a paper cup, it’s always nicer to have the right quality of glass.”

China winemakers seek to compete with the French

While China’s wine lovers continue their obsession with French vintages, a number of local labels are determined to lead the charge to convince them that Chinese winemakers can compete with the very best there is.
Dynasty Fine Wines is based near the city of Tianjin – about a 30-minute train ride from the capital Beijing – and has established a network of around 15 vineyards across the country, which grow not only native Chinese grape species such as Dragon’s Eye but increasingly have turned to the more internationally recognized cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc varieties.

There is an “overwhelming preference for dark, tannic red wines in China” – according to the China Wines Information Website – which says this is because Chinese consumers are judging their wines less on taste and more on “what is deemed socially acceptable – or aspirational – to consume.”
To the great majority of those buying at the high-end of the wine market, that basically means vintages from the famed and historic wine growing regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, hence French wines account for around half of China’s entire wine imports.
But the people at Dynasty want to change that kind of thinking.
The label will be out in force at the Vinexpo Asia-Pacific wine fair – to be held in Hong Kong from May 21-29 – and on show will be its high-end range of red wines.
“People prefer Louis Vuitton to domestic brands these days. The same goes with wine,” company chairman Bai Zhisheng told the South China Morning Post.
But Bai said that Dynasty’s top range of reds – which sell for around 1,400 yuan (171 euros) per bottle – would account for 30 percent of its output within five years, up from the current 10 percent, as the company increased its marketing push and its distribution.
Dynasty has no plans as of yet to tackle the international wine market and another one of China’s leading wine labels also believes that Chinese winemakers should conquer their own market before setting their sight overseas.
And it makes sense considering wine consumption in China is growing at a faster rate than anywhere else in the world, according to industry reports, and the market has grown by 20 percent over each of the past five years.
The Great Wall label has wineries at both Sanggan and Huaxia in the northern Hebei province and another near Junding in the eastern Shangdong province growing more than 10 varieties of grapes.
The state-run China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Corp, which owns the label, last year brought in renowned French winemaker Michel Rolland – ex of Chateau Angelus, Chateau Lascombes and Chateau Beau-Sejour Becot – to help both improve the quality of its wines and to teach a new generation of Chinese winemakers all the secrets he learned back in France.
“We have brought in the best kind of vines, but we also need a good wine maker, just as a decent restaurant needs a good chef, the company’s vice-chairman Chi Jingtao told the China Daily.
He said the company had invested heavily in established vineyards in France, Italy and Australia as it looked to produce vintages from the red grape varieties it had imported such as cabernet sauvignon.
“We will look for more high-end global acquisitions later, as the immediate priority is to have more products in the domestic market. No other market is growing as rapidly as China,” Chi said.

Bordeaux 2011: Margaux, Palmer and Lynch Bages release

The Bordeaux campaign has stuttered to life again with price releases from Chateau Margaux, Chateau Palmer, Chateau Lynch Bages and some two dozen smaller properties.
The most important release yesterday was Chateau Margaux, at €360 ex-negociant, down 40%, followed by 3rd growth Chateau Palmer, at €160, down 25.6%.
Palmer, though critically acclaimed – Steven Spurrier for Decanter called the 2011 ‘first growth quality’ – has dismayed merchants by its price.
Farr Vintners’ Stephen Browett repeated his assertion that ‘there are plenty of ready-to-drink vintages of Palmer that consumers can buy cheaper than this. Although its one of the better wines of the vintage there is no demand for it at that price.’
Palmer is with most UK merchants at £1750 a case. The 2001, to which Browett had referred as ‘ready-to-drink’, is £1200.
Other merchants were similarly gloomy. One, Will Gardener, who runs the fine wine department at Midlands merchant Nickolls and Perks, said, ‘there is no point in offering [Palmer].’
While the blue chip wines – Lafite, Margaux, Pontet Canet – are selling well, even for wines with very fine pedigrees – Palmer, Lynch Bages (€69, down from €100 last year, on the market for £750) – interest is sporadic at best.
Lynch is ‘in the doldrums’, Mark Bedini, managing director of Fine & Rare said – oddly enough, because it ‘seems reasonably priced and normally sells really well. Not this time.’
Another merchant suggested they would have expected Lynch to be cheaper than Pontet Canet, for example, which is on the market for £720 a case, and is considered ‘a superstar’.
For some, the situation is exactly as they expected. Gardener said, ‘We’re doing our best, but we’re sending out an offer every couple of days rather several times a day.’
He stressed that the wines that were selling were the well-priced ‘good drinking wines, like Batailley in Pauillac at £250 a case and Labegorce (Margaux) at £175. ‘You have to take the investment side out of it.’
In Bordeaux, negociants are putting a brave face on the situation. ‘We’ve been spoiled by the last two great vintages,’ Laurent Ehrmann at negociants Barrières Frères told Decanter.com. ‘There is frustration because we’re not selling thousands of cases in a few hours. We need to look to the long term.’
An unexpected consequence this year, for one merchant at least, is the lack of traditional buyers for a vintage that has been toted as ‘a classic drinking vintage’.
Bedini said, ‘We’re finding that our traditional buyers are staying out on the whole, which means new entrants are doing most of the buying. They are more focused on the first growths than other wines.’
Even in a previously rock-solid market – the French supermarkets – ennui seems to have set in.
Ludovic Paternotte, wine buyer for Groupe Casino, which owns a clutch of major retailers including Casino, Géant and Monoprix and buys 200m bottles a year, said Bordeaux made up 50% of his purchasing until a few years ago, but he now finds better value in Languedoc and Rhone.
‘Even for the French supermarkets, the price drops have largely not been enough. The Bordelais seem to forget that France remains their largest market.’
