Aquino’s satisfaction rating drops again

MANILA (Updated 2:06 p.m.) — President Benigno Aquino III suffered another plunge in his net satisfaction rating, with it reaching its “lowest” since he assumed office in 2010, a latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showed.
Conducted in May 24-27, the SWS survey indicated that Aquino’s net score dropped seven points to +42 (63 percent satisfied minus the 21 percent dissatisfied) from +49 (68 percent satisfied minus the 19 percent dissatisfied) last March.
The survey results remain in the “good” territory but it was a record low for President Aquino who got an “excellent” +64 net rating in November 2010.
The SWS classifies net satisfaction scores of +70 and above as “excellent;” +50 to +69, “very good;” +30 to +49, “good;” +10 to +29, “moderate;” +9 to -9, “neutral;” -10 to -29, “poor;” -30 to -49, “bad;” -50 to -69, “very bad;” and -70 and below, “execrable.”
Despite the drop in Aquino’s rating, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the survey “continues to reflect overwhelming support” of the Filipino people.
He noted that the net satisfaction rating of the President remains to be the “highest since June 1999.”
“In most parts of the country, the President enjoys strong majority approval,” he said.
“The President’s policies and programs have focused on restoring public confidence in our institutions, and a government actively working for all sectors in pursuit of inclusive growth. In obtaining widespread national support for his programs, we believe the public sees the efforts being done, and the accomplishments to date,” he added.
Lacierda also cited a quote from SWS president Mahar Mangahas, saying “strong Filipino optimism came back long ago, and is still with us.”
“He marks the return of optimism to the point in 2009 when it became clear to the public Mrs. Arroyo could no longer extend her presidency. Prior to this, the longest stretch of prolonged public optimism was four consecutive quarters under President Ramos. This time, there has been an unprecedented stretch of public optimism: seven consecutive quarters under President Benigno S. Aquino III,” the Palace official said.
The SWS survey showed Aquino’s net ratings fell in almost all geographic areas and among all socioeconomic classes.
It said the “most notable dips” were in Metro Manila and in the ABC class from “good” to “moderate.”
In Metro Manila, Aquino’s score plunged 34 points to +18 (+48 percent satisfied, 30 percent dissatisfied) from +52 (+72 percent satisfied, 20 percent dissatisfied).
A larger 35-point drop was seen among the ABC class from +62 (79 percent satisfied, 16 percent dissatisfied) last March to +25 (54 percent satisfied, 29 percent dissatisfied).
The only ratings of Aquino that improved were in Mindanao, where there were eight points increase from +53 to +61, staying in “very good” territory.
His ratings in Visayas also dropped from “very good” (+50) to “good” (+41).
In Balance Luzon, he maintained his “good” score although it also dropped by four points to +41.
Aquino’s rural satisfaction was almost unchanged at +51 from +52, still “very good,” while urban satisfaction fell to +35, still “good,” from +45.
By socioeconomic class, Aquino’s net rating remained “good” among the class D or masa at +41, slightly lower than the previous survey’s +46.
The President maintained his “very good” ratings in class E, but it also plunged two points to +50.
Satisfaction among women, meanwhile, dropped to a “good” +41 from a “very good” +50. Men, on the other hand, maintained their “good” assessment with a net rating of +43, although lower than the +48 in March.
The SWS survey involved face-to-face interviews of 1,200 adult Filipinos nationwide with sampling error margins of ±3 percent for national and ±6 percent for area percentages. It was published exclusively on its media partner Business World.
