Sampaguita to be made into perfume – Pineda

LUBAO, Pampanga – Gov. Lilia Pineda as the then mayor of Lubao actively assisted sampaguita growers in her hometown.

The sampaguita industry thrives in at least five barangays: San Roque Dau 1st, San Roque Dau 2nd, Sto. Domingo, Sta. Francisco and Sta. Monica.

At least 70 percent of around 4,000 residents of San Roque relied on sampaguita flowers to raise their family decently, not to mention sending their children to college, barangay officials disclosed.

They added that the business is also the major livelihood of residents in the four other villages, including at San Roque Dau 2nd where it reportedly started.

NICE SMELL

In her speech on Monday in San Roque Dau 2nd, Pineda recalled her project as Lubao mayor with the late Mayor Manuel “Manoling” Santiago of nearby Guagua town.

They both planned to turn the sampaguita yield of farmers into perfume with the support of a private firm.

“But our plan did not push through as the farmers’ collective products then would not be able to supply the demand of the perfume maker,” said Pineda in the dialect.

She added that with the help of her daughter, Lubao Mayor Mylyn Pineda-Cayabyab, the stalled project to turn sampaguita flowers into perfume will be realized by ensuring an abundant and steady supply.

Pineda vowed to help farmers, supplying them with an initial 4,000 sampaguita seedlings in her first official action.

She also vowed to give them the necessary farming equipment, some which are deemed expensive.

THE MARKET
Local village councilors said the farmers’ produce are usually brought and sold in Metro Manila, notably in Quiapo, Manila. The Catholic church in Quiapo is surrounded by stalls selling sampaguitas and other flowers.

They said the revived plan of the Pinedas will be “very good because sometimes the demand is low in Metro Manila.”

“If we can send our children to schools, colleges and universities now, what more if we have consistent market demand through the perfume makers? Maybe we can buy a brand new car and have a vacation abroad yearly,” they added in a jest.

THE PIONEER

San Roque Dau 1st Village Chief Luzviminda Bautista said the sampaguita industry in Lubao was pioneered by Ricardo Lalic and Pedro Pamintuan, both locals of their village.

The first sampaguita seedlings planted in the town were reportedly from Laguna province, regarded as the sampaguita capital of the country.

Lalic – fondly called “Apu Lalic” – brought the first seedlings in Lubao. Locals, however, could not remember the exact year the sampaguita industry started at Pineda’s hometown.

“But it has been decades,” they said.

Benjie Diaz, barangay secretary of San Roque Dau 2nd, appealed to the concerned government agencies such as the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to help them deal with a certain “disease” attacking sampaguita plants nowadays.

He added the unknown disease turns the leaves “dry and a bit black in color.”

“And they do not produce flowers at all,” he added.

Roy Imperial, consultant-adviser of Pineda, said the governor will urge the DOST and other agencies to support “all-out” the long-time sampaguita industry with new technology and other forms of assistance.

He stressed that providing livelihood and business opportunities to people has been one of the governor’s priorities. “Especially when it comes to farming and planting,” he added.
